  1. I am very surprised to find John Aaron Rees name missing from the wide receivers listings. Fish over Rees. No way.

Then Arnold over Bailey at kicker. I'm not buying that one either. It is obvious Bailey has the best leg, and by all accounts they were even in the accuracy department. No logic to that one.

  2. jjfmetal says:

    I second that!!!

  3. 10KHog says:

This has nothing to do with this thread… but I'm really surprised some overzealous USC fan has not found this site and started a little controversy.

  4. Razorbilly says:

Sunshine, you shouldn't be too surprised about the kicking situation. As Mike Irwin says, "HDN has a case of veteranitis".

  5. wishark says:

I have not seen very much of the kicking but my friend who has predicted that Arnold would win some time ago. At 45 yards Arnold made just as many as Bailey. But on the ones he missed he was barely missing. Bailey would sometimes have a really bad kick. Bailey has a little more leg but Arnold seemed to be much more consistent and the ball got up quicker with more consistency which equals less potential blocks.

If they are pretty much even, and one seems to be more consistent, and he is older, and has kicked in games, why is that not logical?

  6. HogBlogger says:

Razorbilly – I think you are totally correct. Vet vs. freshman.

Sunshine – I'm with you on both points. I suspect we'll see him out there anyway.

10KHog – The map doesn't even show any readers in So. Cal. We did have the one blog guy contact us, but he fell off the map and never answered my email. That guy in Vietnam is serious about us though….. maybe he'll comment at some point…

  7. TipsterHog says:

wishark…guess it's all perception. At the practices I went to, I thought the same…except I thought Bailey was better. HogBlogger and I went to a lot of practices, but I'm not going to say your friend was wrong. Both Arnold and Bailey are kickers and…by definition…are flighty. ;-)

One thing that worries me is that Jeremy Davis beat out Arnold for the job last spring. (Bailey wasn't on campus yet.) Arnold was definitely better than Davis in the fall but it makes me wonder if Arnold's consistency will last for the whole season.  And as for Arnold's "experience," one extra point does not a kicker make.  (I sound like Yoda.)

Oh well…Alex Tejada can't get here fast enough. The question is…with Houston Dale's "veteranitis," will he be given a chance to kick as a freshman?

  8. So if Arnold is good to about 45, that means Houston will trust him at about 40 and in. That means that the offense has to drive to the 23 for us to be in FG range. Just like the last few years.

I hate that, as that leads our coaches to make bad decisions to go for it on fourth down when we are between 23 and 33, knowing that our PK has no range.

If they are both about the same in accuracy, then give me the guy with the best leg. At least I'll get a few points every once in a while when my offense drives to the 25-30 yard line.

  9. Wishark says:

I think regardless you will see more kicks this year from the 30 just becuase our defense is better. I have been trying to find it in statistics but cannot. There are fewer and fewer field goals every year from 45 yds out. The trend is down because the statistics show that the averages for making a 4th and 3 are as good as making a 48 yard field goal. There are not many who can kick consistently from outside 45 yds.

We have not been as good at field goal kicking as we were in the past. ANd worse than the avg NCAA team that last couple of yrs(I have been trying to download statistics to back these numbers up). But not a whole lot worse than average. A 4-7 record with a bad offense and defense puts more pressure on the 4th down decision at the 25 yd line.

My main point is that if you compare us to the avg NCAA team we have not been as bad as we think. But our comparison is to the kickers we have had in the past when we were way above NCAA avg. We have to get better. I hope Tejeda is the answer but I am not willing to bet on a guy who only attempted 4 field goals last year and kicks off a tee. He has the leg, and the demeanor supposedly. I hope he is the next Steve LIttle, Steve Cox, Bruce Lahay, or Ish Ordonez. By the way. Steve LIttle was the last guy up until O-Donohue that got a scholarship out of high school and did not have to earn it first. And he got it as a QB/athlete.

I wish Ken Turner was on staff. He is the main reason we used to have great kickers.

  10. Bill Edwards says:

My uncle Howard (Red ) Hickey played football for the razor backs, served in the navy in WW2 and played end for the LA Rams, coached the ends, and ended up head coach of the 49ers and devised the shotgun formation to fit Billy Kilmer.I am a USC man and I saw the game last year here in LA. I do not think the score will be as onesided as last year, but SC will win.

  11. Bill Edwards says:

I expected to hear some disagreement to my previous statement about my uncles connection with the razorbacks and my connection with USC, but total silence.

Appearently all hogs fans agree with my first email ( USC will win )

  12. Bill Edwards says:

Hogblogger-Aug. 25th, I am personally refering to you. You remarked that no USC fan responded as of yet. Well, I have responded in aq nice way twice on how we are going to kick your butt. Talk to me Man. GO TROJANS, Wild Bill

  13. TipsterHog says:

Hey Wild Bill! Sorry to disappoint but I think you'll find that there's not much bravado over here saying "we're gonna kick your butt!" after last year's thrashing. Now if you were a Tennessee fan… ;-) (HogBlogger still might take you up on it, though. He likes stirring things up.)

I talked to my dad tonight and he told me your uncle was a great Razorback football and basketball player. I became more informed about him after reading the newspaper stories when he passed away earlier this year.

For those who are interested, Wikipedia has a pretty good writeup here:

I'm glad you found our site and thanks for commenting. Come on back and comment after the game and we'll see who'll be talking a little smack!

  14. Bill Edwards says:

    Hey Tipsterhog

Thanks for coming back to me. Maybe I was a little strong in my remark " were going to kick your butt ". I am very happy your father remembered my Uncle and his accomplishments at UA.I had a soft spot in my heart last year while watching the game at the LA Coliseum. I even had a chance to banter with a half dozen Razorback fans prior to the game who had traveled out here. Thank you very much for putting the Wikipedia address out there. I did not know about it.I will come back to you next week. I promise I will not brag if we win. As I said, I have a soft spot for them hogs. Good luck, Wild Bill

  15. Bill Edwards says:

    Hi Hogblogger

Received your email today. Yes , Tipster jumped into the fray bigtime. As I stated in my previous email to Tipster, I am somewhat favorable to the Razorbacks because of my Uncle, BUT I must go along with my College. As you stated, it is all in fun. Good luck to the HOGS. GO SC. Wild Bill ( Do not know why I use that signoff except my golfing buddies say that ) I suspect it is because of some of my Drives. Good luck
