Darian Townes’ two free throws with seven seconds left forced an extra three minutes, but freshman guard Stefan Welsh scored three of the five total points scored in overtime as his Red team held on for a 97-94 victory in Arkansas’ Red-White Game on Friday.

Concerns on the Red/White game…
Walking on Sunshine didn't stand up and call the Hogs at any point during the game…and he calls himself a Hog Fan. Harumph….just kidding, Sunshine…
Big guys still making a lot of fouls. The following big guys fouled out in the game…Stephen Hill and Cyrus McGowan each had 7 fouls – and both fouled out technically before the overtime period. Charles Thomas and Darian Townes each had 5 fouls – I think both fouled out in the OT period. In addition, Michael Washington and Vincent Hunter had 4 fouls.
The only other person to foul out was superstar Sonny Weems – and that's not good to have your superstar to foul out before the game is over.
Another major concern is the free throw shooting…what is it with missing free throws? Ervin was 1-4, Hill was 1-3, Thomas was 5-9, and Townes was 7-12. I've singled these guys out because they are the only most likely to be on the floor a lot this season, and thus have the most opportunity to shoot free throws….the rest of the bunch did pretty good on their free throws.
The last concern I have is the high number of shots Patrick Beverley took in the game (he was 8 out of 22, and 2 of 9 from the 3 point line – including the game's final missed shot that was blocked). He did contribute 2 assists, but if the boy is going to take that many shots, he better be making more than 50% of his shots. And, what's up with Charles Thomas shooting 5 from the 3 point line? He only made one. We need Mr. Thomas to be more consistent with that outside shot if he has any dreams of being the next Dwight Stewart!!
Ok, enough of the griping…here's what was good.
Sonny Weems – a man among boys out there on the floor. You could tell that if need be, he could take over the game single handed. He's got a "to die for" fade away shot…remind me a bit of Joe Kleine when he played for Arkansas. In addition, the man just glides in the air…he is definitely a work of art to oooh and aaah over. A true masterpiece…I hate that he only has 2 years of eligibility…he'll be fun to watch.
Beverley and Stefan Welsh – both of these boys are very Clint McDaniel like in the quickness. It will be interesting to see what they will be like when both are on the floor at the same time. I think they both ended up guarding each other throughout the game. Beverley got 2 steals, while Welsh didn't get any; however, Welsh was the more accurate shooter of the 2.
Stephen Hill has a beautiful left handed jump hook. I didn't think he shot it often enough. Hopefully, he will continue to gain confidence in that shot. It will be very hard to defend.
Ervin and McCurdy – In my opinion, they both did a good job in running the offense. Even though Ervin had 3 turnovers and McCurdy had 4 turnoverrs, they both seemed to play within themselves.
Finally, the overall quickness of this team is going to be fun to watch. Beverley and Welsh have extremely quick hands and feet. Weems is smooth…I don't know how else to describe him…just a superstar in the making.
Folks, I think these guys will get their 22+ win season…assuming that they stay injury free and stay humble.
Go Hogs!
Great observations Taxhawg. As a sunshiner, I tend to struggle with these Red-White contests. Thus the "sitting version" of my hog call was on display.
Going into the season, my expectations were less than 22 wins, given the percentage of our offense that was lost. However after watching the Razorbacks hoops mania, and the Red-White contest last night, I think we might be better than that.
I want to see a little more, but so far so good.
