So, I turn on the TV last night only to find that the game is televised. I was shocked. I didn't even know there was a game until yesterday and didn't think it was on TV. I watched the game while doing other things around the house and talking to a friend on the phone about the recent developments in the Razorback football program.
Then, when it was over I thought, "This is terrible, I didn't even care to watch this game". That's how far we've come since the glory days. There used to be 15-20k in Bud Walton arena for games like this and it used to be fun to watch the Hogs.
Now, we have what we have. They've got some talent and they may even end up being pretty good. But, it's becoming more clear everyday with this basketball program and the football program that winning doesn't always cure everything. Winning is more like pepto bismol when you're stomach is hurting. It coats and covers up the pain for a short period of time, but then when you lose the pain comes back even stronger.
That's what happened with this football team and is what is happening with this basketball. The fact is style matters this day in age. And let's face it, the style on the basketball court these days is lacking. I find it hard to get motivated to even watch a game on TV and it is a shock if I ever pay face value for a ticket.
I say all this because I don't think I'm alone. I hope we get better and I hope we make it to the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament this year, but I'm just not as excited about bball this year. I think it may have to do with traveling six hours to go watch the Mighty Razorbacks get it handed to them by Bucknell…. WHO???? They didn't even have scholarship players until a few years ago.
But, if Steven Hill keeps playing like he did last night and Patrick Beverly keeps shooting like he did last night and Sonny Weems becomes the high flying act we are all waiting on him to be then I might just be able to get excited again. But, just like Pepto Bismol when we lose the pain will probably come back.
9,271 there last night. 10K is right…fans now days must get a win AND be entertained. We have a winning record, but not entertaining enough of them. The Big-10 style is not visually pleasing sometimes.
Although I will say that if we shoot 56% from the field, and 57% from the 3-point line, that will help our cause some.
HogBaller says wait till we get through this 4-game stretch between Oakland and Christmas before judging this team, so that's what I'm doing.
It's a shame when you reach the point that in order to support a team they have to win every game and then win "my way". I remember the Eddie Sutton days in Barnhill…..slow down boring basketball….what was the Texas score….38 to 37….but the stands were rocking!!!! Given the same game, same style but with today's fans and I guess the stands would be empty. Sad what we've become.
Even Eddie changed his "style" as he got older. OSU is one of the fastest and high flying clubs in college basketball now. In some respects, not that I would, but I see how James Anderson could pick OSU over us.
10KHog I guess you missed my point….it's not about changing styles or winning by what ever method is most poplar at the time but supporting a team completely though the good times and the bad times and at the same intensity. I look at supporting the Hogs the same way I support my kids when they play a game……I want them to win so bad it hurts but if they lose I'm just as anxious for the next game as I was for the game just finished and that holds true if the team is 0-10 or 10-0. I sincerely believe there are not many true Hogs fans left….mostly fair weather ones…..I think the 9,271 in attendance last nigh pretty well indicates that but I was one of them and that's what counts with me.
