The thing that continues to dissapoint me the most with this team is a lack of identity, either offensive or defensive. I don't know how other teams prepare for us, because WE don't even know what our gameplan is. Luckily for them, if they just play solid 'fundamentals', we get beat. We can't be classified. Stan Heath's team at Kent state was a "go inside, out work and out rebound the opponents" philosophy (side note: where did that philosophy go? We have some incredible inside talent wasting away). Mike Anderson (and previously Nolan Richardson) were known for their "turning defense into transition offense. Florida won with inside agility paired with outside shooting. Back to Arkansas…can you define us? I'm left without any idea, apparently just like the players.
I was at the game and the bottom line is our more talented team got beat by a less talented, more fundamentally sound team. Knight's players ran their motion offense exactly the way they wanted. Our guys stand around and wait for a someone to get open. It looks terrible and the results are terrible. I could get a group of high school players to run a motion offense better than that in a week.
Hogsdill is right. We got dominated by a less talented team. Some basic things that we can't manage; fast break defense, defending the 3, running the defender off a screen, just to name a few. I like Stan Heath but I think its clear we get outcoached on a regular basis and our talent does't progress. As a freshman I thought Townes would dominate this conference one day and instead he hasn't progressed a bit. Some point to the polarization of football fans that Nutt must go, but love it or hate it we at least give a crap about football. The indifference I feel when I watch our basketball team is the real problem. Look how few comments get posted about B-ball.
One side had a clear understanding of what they are, what they were trying to do, and how they planned to do it. The other side did not.
TT point guard Charlie Burgess said it best…"Teams like (Arkansas) are only going to run their sets for a little bit, and then they're going to go one-on-one. So we just did our best to create as much chaos as possible." I'm sure ole' Charlie didn't just think that quote up…I'm guessing he heard that bit of advice from his HOF head coach.
This is the common thread in both the Missouri and Texas Tech defeats….on the ball pressure. If you pressure our guards and perimeter players, they just go goofy. It breaks down into a dribble-fest, and a throw-it-and-hope 3-point contest. Compounded by 20+ turnovers makes for an ugly, disappointing outcome.
I hope it gets better against the Longhorns Wednesday…wait and see, I guess.
Well, I've seen enough. I'll wait until Frank leaves as AD and we hire Mike Anderson. At least when we lose playing his style it will be bearable to watch.
On the offense. I agree with everyone's points up here. I have a new respect for Nolan Richardson's halfcourt offense. At least Nolan was honest and said he didn't care about the halfcourt offense and figured out another way to win. We don't have another way to win.
We're horrible.
I agree with that 10K, and that is what is SO SCARY about Missouri. Mike Anderson is different that Nolan. He actually believes in and has a half court offense. Actually, Nolan did too when he won the national championship.
At its best 40 minutes of hell is to pressure the ball and make the other team cough it up either with a steal or with a bad shot selection. Then, in order for it to be effective, your team has to score and what Anderson did against us was just that.
That all being said, Bobby Knight did exactly the same thing. They made us make silly mistakes, take bad shots and turn the ball over. Once that was accomplished, the executed an offense and "scored the ROCK".
Heath needs to figure that out and more importantly, he needs to help his guards figure that out.
On another topic, I find it funny how we can turn around the "turn over" problem between halves. How many did we have in the first half against Mizzou and Texas Tech? How many did we have in the second? Couldn't we figure out how to keep our hands on the ball while play is going on via a time out or something? Why do we always need half time to figure this out? God help us if we get in a tight game in the second half and start turning it over, since our guys don't know how to adjust unless they have a 10-15 minute talk about it.
