I'm sorry, I don't mean to nitpick, but you've got to save Schmidt for the second OSU game. Good season for this team, not great. Van Horn is the best coach on the hill. I wish we had more like him.
According to you "he's the best coach on the hill"!! It appears he gave the same results as others. Why is he so much better?
Bluff…Van Horn has made it to his sport's version of the BCS (a.k.a. College World Series)…both here on "The Hill" and multiple times at another school.
Houston Dale is still sorta working on that one. Only time will tell about Pelphrey.
And I'd argue that John McDonnell is the best coach on the Hill…even when Nolan was there. Hard not to say that since his teams have won like a billion national championships.
That's an awfully hateful response to a simple question Tipsterhog. I never mentioned Coach Nutt, but you immediately start with your childish insults. Yes, Coach McDonnell is the best coach on the hill and has proven that time after time.
This baseball team that Van Horn coached was one of the preseason favorites to win the title and make a strong push for the College World Series. They struggled at the end of the season, losing their last three series and have now lost the "homefield regional" (according to most that I've listened as one of the easiest trips to Omaha). With that type preseason hype and the draw they received for a regional, it appears to me that he and his team underachieved this year. That's not the makings of the "best coach on the hill"!
I'm certainly not saying that Coach Van Horn is a bad coach. I think he has done a fantastic job with our baseball team. I just don't see the reasoning to classify him as the "Obvious Best Coach on the Hill".
Bluffhawg, ouch – a little sensitive here! I don't see anything "hateful" with TipsterHog's reply. Naturally, there are typical comparisons with our big 3 sports (baseball, basketball, and football) – track doesn't normally enter into the discussion. In the big 3 sports, Van Horn would probably qualify as the best (in my book). Overall, McDonnell has to win hands down as the best coach too. Unfortunately, he is fairly easy to over look solely based upon the sport.
Since you are a little touchy, I won't mention that ANOTHER (Jeff) Nutt let us down (at least he when down swinging)! Just kidding guys!!! Man, what a disappointment in losign to OSU AGAIN!
BlindHog, if I follow your thinking on games, you are referencing Schmidt going Sunday night vs Sunday afternoon. I totally agree with your thinking here.
Bluffhawg…what's your relationship with Houston Dale?
Not touchy OwassoHog, I simply take offense to Tipsterhog immediate assumption that my question was a Coach Nutt defense and doing her best to talk down with her unwarranted comments . That wasn't my point at all. I was simply asking BlindHog how he could label Coach Van Horn as the obvious best coach on the Hill when there are others that have accomplished as much during there time on the hill and others that have accomplished more.
Once again, I feel that given the preseason hype that the team received, we underachieved and we should have expected more with the talent that's assembled.
Sorry again, my mistake. John Mc Donnell obviously deserves his due. He is an historic coach, no question. And it is not my intention to in anyway discount that when I say that I was talking about team sports. Yes there are relay teams in track and their are stratagies to winning meets but in fact track is like tennis and golf in that it is coaching a group of individuals to achieve individual goals. Sorry for the distinction. I shouldn't have made it.
And, in fact, my poor comment was really directed at a kind of 'total package' impression of coaching team sports. Van Horn is a very bright guy who challenges and leads his team with clarity and integrity. No, Dale is not even in his class. Sorry.
Bluffhawg, you are correct – this team underachieved! No question about it.
Thank You OwassoHog. That was my point. I feel that our baseball team needs to replace our hitting/batting coach. That seems to have been our biggest concern the entire year (especially late). Granted our pitching staff layed an egg on Saturday night against Okie St., but in most cases they were very strong and our hitting was not.
Not making it to Omaha made this team an underachieving team. All the plans were aligned over the last two years to build this year's team to go to Omaha.
I don't disagree about reevaluating the hitting coach (Butler). Honestly, I think he was more on the hot seat after last season. It probably doesn't warrant a change after this season but the clock is ticking.
Bluff…As to my earlier comment, you were asking for a comparison between Van Horn and the other coaches on "The Hill" and I gave you my opinion. Making it to that level (BCS in football, Elite 8 in basketball, CWS in baseball) is the measure of championship coaches. People who support Houston Dale hate that fact the most and they should. It doesn't surprise me that you didn't want me to be "hateful" and mention it.
Tipsterhog. I take no offense to comparing coaches. I think every coach must stand on his own merits. As a matter of fact, I feel that our football team, talent & schedule considered, are set for a very successful season this coming year (9-3, 10-2, 11-1). If they are not successful, I think our coaching staff must be held to a higher standard and be accountable for underacheiving. With that being said the only think in your post that I take offense to is your "Your boy Dale" comment!!. I 'm glad to see that you must feel the same way and edited your post.
Bluff…agreed…that part was too harsh.
Hey… in keeping with the baseball theme… I'll have to call that FOUL! TipsterHog with his superpowers that the rest of us don't have
Owasso…ha…I guess that makes me BATman.
Ugh…I'm not as good at those puns as you are!
Hey, quit being the JOKER and let's discuss some real stuff. Oh wait! It's all over now… time to talk 2-a-days!
From a baseball standpoint, there are a number of items we can still discuss.
Will there be any coaching changes? Probably not unless a grad assistant.
Who will be drafted from the Jr's and the signees? Who will sign and who will make it here?
Who will transfer? We always seem to have a couple leave for various reasons.
There are some good underclassmen coming back. The team won't be void of talent but there are big holes to fill. Who will fill them and how good can they be will be one of the keys.
As for this year, we relied heavily on a strong starting pitching staff. Maybe to much so. The hitting seemed to become weaker as the season went on. Some players appeared to be only interested in hitting home runs. Have we developed that mentality? Can we change it if that is the case?
I'm exicted about the future but concerned about certain aspects of our team.
I agree somewhat with Bluff, that our pitching layed an egg against the Pokies, but honestly guys, you have to admit OK St. strikes HR's like South Carolina, and base hits like Miss. St. They've done it all year with average pitchers. If they had one guy like a David Price, or a Nick Smitchz, these guys would be serious contenders for the overall tital. They have an excellent hitting team!
