Freshman Donald Sims scored 24 points off the bench Saturday — including 10 in a row in the first half — as Appalachian State defeated Arkansas 74-67 on a neutral court ringed with red-clad Razorbacks fans.

I live in Charlotte, about 2 hours away from App State. The last time I heard ANYBODY talk about App State basketball was, oh…..NEVER!!!
This is a terrible loss, any way you slice it.
This is not the team I invisioned in December. We didn't seem to have as many silly fouls in this one, but we can't hit the broad side of a barn from the charity stripe, Steven Hill still doesn't rebound, and Gary Irvin is still up and down with consistantsy. Sometimes these guys act like they've never played together before. I'm starting to wonder just how coachable these kids really are. I haven't seen the fire in Coach Pelphrey's eyes the last couple of ball games, like he had earlier in the year. Appalachian St. was putting everything through the hoop. Just one of those games I guess. Personally, I'd be happy if they never played another game in Attel Arena. I've never once seen them play well in that arena.
Gonzo—I agree with all you said. This group of seniors is horrible as as team. We have no shooters (maybe Beverley, but with only one, not hard to guard), no go-to-guy, no defensive stopper (maybe Britt in time), but most of all, no heart. I think Pel realizes that he will have to wait 'til his players arrive to be good. No more games at Alltel!
Bad loss no doubt, but you've got to give App State some credit.
I said at the end of the first half…"Well there's no way they can shoot 60% in the second half." And they didn't…they shot 78% in the second half. We just ran into a team that shot well, and playing in an unfamiliar home arena, didn't help our shooting improve.
I'm a bit surprised Pelphrey didn't "cancel Christmas", but I guess he thought some time away might help them recharge.
Disappointing, but not a season defining loss in my mind. I think if you check App State's record at the end, they will most likely be in the NCAA tourney.
I am not knowledgable enough about basketball to understand what Coach can do to get our defense to stifle hot shooting teams like OU and Applachian State on the days we played them. Ideas and comments?
Sunshine…I realize by nature that you are able to stay more positive than most of the rest of us.
However, App. State is already 0-2 in their own conference. They've lost to Georgia Southern and Davidson (at home) by more than 10 points each. I don't think they're going to be doing March Madness any time soon.
It happens. In 1982, Chaminade, then a member of the NAIA, defeated Virginia in what is considered the biggest upset in college basketball history. Virginia, which featured Ralph Sampson and Rick Carlisle, was the top-ranked team in NCAA Division I basketball entering the game after posting victories against Georgetown (with Patrick Ewing) and Phi Slama Jama of Houston. But in the Blaisdell Arena, the 3,500 fans in attendance – most of whom had come to see the Nation's #1 team – witnessed the historic 77-72 upset.
I'm not ready to throw in the towel on this team. I think we still have to be patient. Sometimes it just work's that way. When there's a coaching change, and there's so much to buy into, it can be a bumpy road to overcome every obstical in front of you. This team has lot's of individual talent. We've seen what they can do when they play as a team. The problem is still the same as it was last year. Disipline, focus, and consistansy. If you take care of the first one, the last two will follow. Some of these kid's don't think that way, and don't want to think that way. Why do you think so many of them have been in the "dog house" already? There's a chance they may not come together as a team, as we had hoped for, but as a Hog fan, I'm going to keep my fingures crossed. GO HOGS GO!!!!!
