This is very disappointing. It was reported by a Jacksonville newspaper that Jones was caught in the act of chopping up the dope. There was 6 grams of cocaine found inside the vehicle he was sitting in. That’s enough to charge him with distributing a controlled substance. I wonder why they didn’t? There’s lot’s of people that didn’t get cut that kind of slack over the years that had even less dope in thier possesion. He’s real lucky as far as I’m concerned. He’s never been in trouble before, so he’ll get nothing but a slap on the wrist for this one. He’ll be a felon now, but won’t have to serve any time. Possesion carries a term 5 years, so that’s how long he’ll be on probation. A pretty stiff fine will have to be paid and It’ll be over.

Just off of the distasteful situation regarding Jones. I have been out of the state for several months. I get back and Wally Hall has a travel column on his adventures on an Italian cruise liner. Now excuse me, but who cares. What was worse was that Wally was with a bunch of Italians during a World Cup game of Italy against Spain, and the uncreative idiot can’t figure out that this is a sports human interest story about a game that is being played by numerous Arkansas kids. He could have Interviewed fans, through an interpreter, recorded their emotions during the suspense of the game (emotions transcends language), portrayed the agony of defeat (Italy lost), made a comparison of European fans vs Razorback or LSU football fans, and much more. I played the game when I was young because my father was a coach, but I turned to American sports and never left. I think watching a soccer match is like wataching paint dry. But I’m not a sports writer. The opportunity for a really good sports piece was lost there and all Wally could talk about some Capuchin caves. (Maybe he was seasick, and merely transcribed the information in the travel folders). But this guy is the chief sports editor of the Demo-Zette? What have we fans done to deserve this kind of practiced incompetence? And to think that I used to be critical of Orville Henry.

Hey Jim, don’t be too hard on Wally! I’m sure most of his time was spent trying to figure out a way to work the phrase “perspiring arts” into his coverage of the caves. Apparently, he was also stumped on how to get in a plug for Corky’s.

I have wondered who tipped off the cops. It’s not like the Fayetteville police make a practice of searching every car with white guys parked off of Dickson Street. Hmm. I also wonder if this will be an excuse for the Jaguars to trade Jones since the coaches and management haven’t been too happy with his efforts. Problem for the Jaguars with dumping Jones has been two-fold. First, can’t give up on a first round choice, especially if he has been somewhat productive. Second, my understanding has been that he is popular with the fans, and there were grumblings about not throwing the ball his way. Gerard seemed to ignore Jones as a receiver but Lefkowitz was more prone to use him..The complaint has been about underutilization, especially near the goal line… In any case, this will give the Jag staff an excuse to unload him, perhaps to the Cowboys, since Jerry Jones seems to overlook bad habits of players if they can still be a major contributer. There is no doubt that Jones is a major threat to score inside the 20. However, the Jags may have been aware of Jones’ cocaine use, especially if he has a real problem with it. One wonder hows much this has affected Jones’ play. We’ll see what happens next.. Jacksonville’s move.

Hog n’ Iowa. Your right. I was too hard on Wally. HIs column today about Jones wasn’t bad. I often wonder (again) jhow much writers like Wally know about situations like this and don’t tell all. By the way, In Wally’s travelogue, he mentioned that he was on a ship with 3500 Europeans and only 100 could speak English. Catch today’s editorial in the Demo-Zette and they are rhapsodizing about how much smarter Euros are than us because they learn a language other than their own. Truth is that working class Euros don’t know another language well or at all, because they don’t need it and don’t use it. I thank Wally for bringing this bit of America bashing in the media into focus, inadvertant as it was..

I followed Matt Jones all through his college carrier at Arkansas. To his 2005 draft pick at Jacksonville Jaguars. If Matt”s father said that it was not his i believe his dad.

i dont think they should cut him from the team

  • CharleeBrosh

why would Jack DelRio do the Exact same thing to Matt as He did to Byron Leftwich that is not smart thing for him do to somebody like Matt Jones he is a Excellent wide reciever that i know of.

He works his butt off when he wants to I know he can do it

Matt Jones should not be cut because of the arrest that is not smart

Facts are facts. Trust me I was heartbroken when I heard the news of Jones getting pop’d by the cops. His father making a statement like that is just what his lawyers want him to do. You honestly thing he would “spill the beans”? The less the public knows the more he can get away with in the court room. Let the law determine wether he is guilty or not. Also did Matt take a drug test ASAP?? I seriously doubt he took one if he was guilty. 3-4 days after he was busted the coke would be almost gone from his system and literally undetectable.

CB as far as Matt being an EXCELLENT reciever thats a bunch of Hogwash. His work habbits are subpar and laid back attitude that we so much loved here doesn’t fly in the NFL. His numbers are horrible, I know he is an ARK native and we think he’s the best thing next to sliced bread but we must draw the somewhere on thinking they are all perfect. At best he will become a free agent and prolly play half the time he is now at lower quality team. Who knows, maybe he will play some Areana football and become a superstar.

Matt would not be the first sports hero to go down in flames. We need a comment here from Corey Beck. Yes, it can happen to anyone.

Matt had a carefully controlled image at the UofA which made him out to be the all american boy. Rumors indicated otherwise, including some drug use.

It was really stupid to carry 6 grams on his person. He was the only one in the car who could afford that amount. He should have left 5 grams at home.

Drug abuse can be all consuming. Here’s hoping Matt can get a clue and makes a real comeback.

Why not just make it plain and simple? They ALL should have gotten charged with possesion, and they ALL should have gotten charged with parifinellia. They were All in the same vehicle, with the same dope. This make’s them ALL guilty. Since Matt is the only one who can afford it, he should be the last one crying about innocence. If the dope wasn’t his, then my next question would be, which one of your other two buddies is going to step up and take the fall? I bet they won’t be able to afford the lawyer Matt has. Like usual though, when it come’s to celebreties, this whole thing will just get turned into a circus, that tries to avoid the truth in the end. I wish Matt the best, but he should pay for his crime like everyone else.
