This game was a great example where our youth and lack of depth caused the loss. Next year, we will win these types of games, or totally avoid getting ourselves in an overtime situation.
I'm just hoping Gonzo was happy with Washington's 50% 3 pt shooting performance
All I know was that I stepped away for a minute and when I came back the announcer said that coach probably didn't like Washington taking that last 3 point attempt! Right after that, it seems that we got left behind by Ole Miss.
Welsh 4 for 19 taking the last shot? He shoots a third of the shots while hitting a rocking 25% at home. Fortson seemed to have another good game. More assists than turnovers and 13 rebounds. Henry doesn't play because he didn't practice well. I guess Sanchez must be excellent in practice.
Sanchez is a more disaplined player and student, but what do I know? Rebuilding a team doesn't start with disapline, oh no no no….. It start's with players.
Since I cannot rag on Fortson after this game, let me see, who can it be? Ah, Stefan Welsh wins the goober prize for this game! What is the deal? This guy is not a freshman, so he does not have that excuse. Let me say that when I played basketball if I missed a high percentage of my first few shots I switched to layups or passing. How does a guy who is OFF take 19 shots? Maybe Pel knows the answer ' cause I don't.
T Towner, Welsh hit the 3 to take it to OT…..can't make em all. I agree that's too many shots for Welsh.
Next year could be it if Pel doesn't get it together.
These hairs have been split for too long. Nothing left. Its 18 wins or hit the road.
too bad?
NOT.
Haven't visited the website much this year — too depressing both in football and bball. Haven't seen any posts on how basketball recruiting is going. Please tell me we at least have something to look forward to next year. I hate to bring it up but at least Nolan brought in some jucos who could play.
Is it just me or does it seem there is no motion in our offense? We seem to stand around and wait for the defense to fall down instead of creating open shots? I'm sorry but for someone who supposedly takes 500 shots a day Rotnei Clarke is a disappointment. He should be hitting 40% or better.
And good gawd, our freethrow percentage is awful!!! That is the easiest shot in all basketball. Not a soul on you. Why else do they call it a "freethrow"? Any team that can't hit at least 70% ought to be embarrassed to take the floor or be playing NAIA ball.
NEA,
Recruiting is anyone's guess right now.
The Hogs have Marshawn Powell coming in next season, and he's supposed to be the real deal at the PF position.
At 6'7", and over 230 lbs, athletic and strong, he should bring an inside presence with him. (rebounding and inside scoring)
Anthony Bordon is a 7'0", 230 lb. Center, who was supposed to be "riding the fence" academically.
The word was, he was supposed to go the Post Graduate School route after HS.
The word now is that he may actually make the grade, and be able to enroll at the UofA next year after all.
He's still somewhat a project, only playing in his 3rd year of basketball as a Sr.
His HS coach seems to think he will eventually be a great player on the Div.1 level.
Jamal Farmer is a 6' 5", 215 lb. , SG, JUCO transfer from Kansas.
He chose the UofA over Nebraska, and is supposed to be able to score from a variety of places on the floor with his size. (Hopefully, he plays solid defense)
Other than those 3, Pelphrey is looking at some other JUCOS in the state of Florida.
He's supposedly is on a couple of pretty good ones, with one of them being an ex-starting Freshman PG for 'Bama. (I think his last name is Pickett)
I can't remember the other kid's name right off, but I think he's from Chipola Jr. college.
I remember reading an article where Van Stuman (CBS College Basketball Analyst) said he thought this kid was the best pure PG in the JUCO ranks.
That's pretty much all I know about our basketball recruiting so far. I hope the information helped.
Someone else may have a little more info on it.
Oh, one more thing. The kid named Pickett, that used to play for the Tide, played AAU ball with C. Fortson, when they were still in HS.
They were pretty good together, and Pickett was supposed to have said he was considering the Hogs as one of his top choices, and that "maybe they could do it all over again."
I would prefer to take the risk and let the Borden kid from West Memphis to go to prep school for a year, leaving scholarships for one or both of the Florida Juco's we're looking at. That's just me, though. Or maybe redshirt Andre Clark next year, since he seems pretty lost out on the floor when he gets in the game. This is all assuming Washington doesn't get the big head and go pro, of course. Anyone else have thoughts on that?
GonzoHOg,
Thanks for the update.
There's no way Washigton is ready to go pro, yet, but another year might change that.
Oh he's good, there's no doubt about that. He just need's another season of fine-tuning.
That doesn't mean of course he won't go. It just means if he does, it'll probably be a year too soon.
I will say this though, if he does decide to go, at least he's more ready for the jump than Olu Famutimi was.
I wish it were true that Nolan brought in some good players during his last few seasons but that was not the case. After winning the NC in 1994, his teams faded badly. Bring on baseball!!
At least Petrino seems up beat for the coming fb season.
