So they practiced hard and fought until the end. Thanks for the great effort Hogs.

Despite the loss, you gotta give the Hogs a lot of credit for hanging in there and not packing it in when we were down 16. Played hard, especially Delvon in the middle.

    • OwassoHog

      I agree.

  • GolfHog

    Jeff Long is a weasel.

Sure, if they finish strong, build a little momentum, you take a shot at the NIT. Now it just looks like a last pitiful attempt to justify keeping Pelphry. He should have learned from Nutty. You can’t keep a coach that the fans have given up on. Frank found out the hard way.

    • Soupdhog

Man Golf, you’re pretty harsh. And what would one of your posts be without a reference to Houston Nutt?

I think Long is trying to get more exposure for the program and some type of reward for a decent (not great) season. You ever thought it might be good to get the Hogs a few TV games for potential coaches and future recruits to take a look at?

      I guess not.

  • GolfHog

According to Mattingly, Long is trying to live up to a 7 year committment that he and White made. 3 more years?? Really??

How does the program look when they lose at home to ASU.

    • Soupdhog

I don’t think the Hogs are that bad to assume they would lose to a Sun Belt team, but who knows? Don’t forget we beat TN, KY, and Vandy this year….and came back from 16 points down to almost beat TN on a neutral floor.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m for Pelphrey leaving, but I’m also for giving the University and the kids some reward for having a decent season by playing in the NIT. The season was not a disaster by any means.

        Soup,

please look at the facts from espn’s website

        2010-11 OVERALL RANKINGS

        POINTS PER GAME

        70.7 124th OVERALL

        REBOUNDS PER GAME

        34.3 206th OVERALL

        ASSISTS PER GAME

        12.0 241st OVERALL

        FIELD GOAL PCT

        .436 174th OVERALL

I hope this is not considered a decent season. Not including the strength of schedule that was very poor.

I like Phel as a person and I do wish him the best but our basketball base deserves better than we have seen. What would the base do if our football team put up the stats even close to comparison? We would not tolerate it. We should thank Phel for his contributions and quickly raise our expectations. Find a proven coach and return to our winning traditions that we have left far behind. As for the NIT, I am ambivalent.

      • soupdhog

Tomahog…this season was better than last years, and we beat 3 top 25 teams and took another into overtime. Plus, we had a winning record. To me, that’s decent.

As for a new coach, based on some of the names that are being mentioned, I’m not 100% sure they are a step above Pelphrey. They certainly haven’t had much more success, other than Anderson which I still contend won’t come here.

  • Roadhog

IMO the players should decide whether they want to go for a bid in the NIT. Delvon does not yet want to hang up the cardinal hog. Against TN he earned a chance for another shot. Rotnei, too. It’s no big deal to me, but players like to play. Let ‘em play.

  • http://www.therazorbackblogger.com/ GonzoHog

If the TEAM wants to play after an NIT invite, then NO ONE should have the right to say no. Isn’t that what they came here for, to play basketball?

If Jeff Long made the statement he would wait until the end of the season, then he needs to do exactly that. That includes playing in the NIT. (if offered)

To do otherwise is nothing less than cheating these kids.

I’m ashamed that some Hog fans are so consummed with firing the head coach, they can’t even think straight anymore.

  • http://www.razorbloggers.net Walking on Sunshine

Don’t spend a lot of time arguing the NIT. We’re hearing that the NIT is a longshot…Rob Evans said as much on the post-game interview with Chuck last night.

With the NIT being forced to take teams that won their regular season conf titles, but lost in their conference tourneys, there’s not as many spots as you might think for the NIT. Not like it used to be.

  • GolfHog

If the kids want to play, they should play. And, if Jeff Long gave a 7 year committment to a coach with 5 years experience and two short trips to the NCAA then he should keep his word no matter the cost.

But, he should be man enough to own it. Personally, I like straight talk and people whos words match their actions. That’s only one reason I love watching Petrino and Van Horn go about their business. Plenty of people don’t have that skill set. They need to be good at other things.

Pelfrey and Powell can ride off on their own ship into the sunset. We deserve so much better than this. Let’s get a coach who can coach this great recruiting class and get us on the right path.

    • soupdhog

After reading the article about the personal struggles that Powell had this season – plus all of the things that won’t be published, I’m willing to cut him some slack. It’s hard to expect a 19-20 year old kid to have the mental toughness to deal with all of that and be 100% effective.

From what I’m hearing our incoming recruiting class may have eligibility issues in the classroom. Can anyone validate that?

      • http://www.therazorbackblogger.com/ GonzoHog

        Soup,

I’ve been trying to get someone to validate this ever since a handfull of people started the rumor.

I’m beginning to think it’s just one of those meaningless rumors people try to stir up when they’re frustrated with the coach and place all the blame squarely on him.

If they come out and say “I heard rumor that 2 or 3 of the recruits won’t have the grades to make it on campus”, then the argument for keeping CJP because of the talent he recruited loses it’s legs.

I sure wish someone would prove me wrong if there’s anything to this story. At least then we would know where we are with the recruits.

      • GolfHog

I heard it more than once on Shawn and Wally.

      • http://www.therazorbackblogger.com/ GonzoHog

Yeah, kind of like when you heard on the Bo Mattingly show that Long was trying to live up to an agreement he made with White.

Lord knows accepting an NIT bid and allowing CJP to continue coaching through the end proves this whole heartedly. I bet the kids would really be motivated and excited about extending the season then. WPS!!!

I haven’t been much of a partisan in this debate, but I think it is time to make a change now. I so miss the days of 40 Minutes of Hell!
