Arkansas 31, Vanderbilt 28

Zach Hocker kicked a 42-yard field goal with 6:53 left, and eighth-ranked Arkansas rallied yet again to beat Vanderbilt 31-28 Saturday for the Razorbacks’ fourth straight win.

What is up with this defense this season?! All of our “studs” (Franklin, Bequette, Nelson, Thomas) look like they’ve regressed to three seasons ago. They’ve absolutely disappeared! Very grateful for the win, but we cannot and will not continue to win like this. I can see us likely winning the next three considering the opponents and considering we’re at home, but we will get absolutely slaughtered down in Baton Rouge if we haven’t straightened some things up by then. And, it’s likely one of the next three opponents won’t give us the win at the end like Vandy just did.

    • chilidog

at this point, I see no chance in winning the next three games with Willy’s leading the defense. I think it is time to let Willy go as soon as possible (probably at the end of the season). There is no downside to getting rid of him but there are multiple down sides to letting him stay. he’s had 4 yrs and failed. I appreciate his hard work, but this is not a charity job he is in. Coach Petrino has to cut his losses and get a new D-Coordinator, the sooner, the better.

  • Homer_Hog

I agree, our D has been nothing short of dull to say the least. However, they did cause 3 turnovers today, including a scoop and run that resulted in tying the game (with the 2pt conversion).

I actually attribute today’s sloppy game to the offense. Another slow start and a key fumble by DJ didn’t help at all. I also agree that unless CBMFP doesn’t get his team straight then we stand zero chance at beating lsu.

    Also…..

The Wade hit was BLOWN waaaaaay out of proportion. The Vandy kid was shielding his eyes from the sun, not calling a fair catch. No need to eject the kid for that.

    And….

If I have to listen to “Mr. Butthurt Andre Ware” biasly call another Arkansas game, I will projectile vomit. He obviously is still holding an SWC grudge because Houston was never really relevant and the hogs always laid his ass out.

  • redhog1

if u would have guarnteed me a 3 pt. Win going into game..i’d probably been happy…….but we make too many fudamental errors…this deep into season….blocking..tackling…fumbling..pass dropping…..and we had good practice week?….this is mystfying…..still love my hogs though….

  • Jay

And where is Lonnie Gosha since the A&M game?

  • Guinness Snout

I started to post something negative here, but I’m sure all Hog fans feel my frustration. I’ll try to stay positive:

Good – Entertaining games every week

Better – Sitting on 7 wins after 8 games

Best – Being upset by the fact that our #8 hogs are not winning convincingly.

    • redhog1

      agreed….with u g-snout….media has us thinkin…gotta win by 40 or 50 to have a good team……

    • hogfan1

      great screen name

      • redhog1

your screen name …cool also hogfan1

  • GolfHog

We don’t play like a well coached team. I’m beginning to wonder if the coaches were the ones reading their own press clippings.

You either get better or you get worse. Defense is worse than last year.

Wingo is no SEC running back. He doesn’t stick his head in the hole, he dances, spins and sticks his ass in the whole. I hate to call a kid out but, this is Bobby’s mistake.

    • Roadhog

Golf, I was thinking the same as you: this is not a well-coached team. Too many fundamental mistakes, poor execution etc. We needed a 50 yd. FG, a defensive TD and a 2-point conversion to win this game. You’ve gotta be lucky to pull out a win with those kinds of scores.

In his first three years Petrino was in much the same situation as Franklin at Vandy now: He was the underdog, not expected to win, so he could open the playbook with no fear and let it all hang out. Now that he’s favored to win, his team doesn’t have the discipline to function like a fine-tuned machine. Turns out that Bobbyball is sloppy and that it relies on the big play, often the lucky play, to get the win.

And it may be that SEC defensive coordinators have solved Bobbyball and are not impressed by it. His defenses have never been anything to dread.

      • GolfHog

It’s different being the hunted instead of the hunter. We’re a top ten team now. We get everyone’s best shot. We have to learn to put the other team down early, give them no hope, and play without stupid mistakes that give them life. We haven’t made that adjustment.

  • Ward Hog

I am amazed at the masses that are starting to complain about our head coach. Vanderbilt played lights out today. Ole Miss played hard for a coach that really wanted to beat us. I wish our DC would come ready to play, but he DOES make the right adjustments in the second. Enjoy the 7-1 start! WPS!

    • GolfHog

      True.

      Just Win Baby!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m not complainin’, I’m just sayin’.

    • OwassoHog

No truer words have been perfectly spoken…

      • Defense Wins Champio

Holtz has said on TV, you gotta have some good fortune going your way and the Hogs have that. Otherwise, we would have been in an over time game. I though that Vandy’s coach, as most coaches do, got very conservative at the end; otherwise it would have been a Vandy win without he ending. I really thought that Vanderbilt would be hard to beat and they sure were. Their D looked sharp for most of the game.

  • Kentucky Hog

We are an average team at best and our defense that is full of 4 and 5 year players are playing worse now than their freshman and sophomore years. We should not have to go in and make changes at halftime. We should be ready to go and well schooled on what opponents are doing and Willy again shows that he should be coaching girls instead of college athletes.

  • GolfHog

We’ll play much better at home.

  • NEA Hawg Caller

We are not a Top 10 team, much less deserve to be in the BCS Top 10. If we can’t do anything with the running game, offensively & defesively, we will do well to get a bid to the Liberty Bowl. Why do we still not have a running attack 8 games into the season & now give up more running yards defensively with the same players as last year? I don’t look forward to LSU.

  • Roadhog

The team will survive this victory and try to find something positive they can take from it.

  • HOG4EVER

I know everyone is frustrated the hogs aren’t winning big against seemingly lesser opponents, but keep it in perspective. Arkansas is building an elite program, not just an average program that competes for a shot at the “who-gives-a-crap” bowl every season. When you start going to BCS bowls, teams get up for you. Sure they haven’t looked great, but look at the big picture. We are 7-1. We beat SEC teams on the road. There has been injuries on both sides of the ball all season. (The difference in good teams and elite teams is depth, just ask Tennessee this year). The team is still very young, just look at all the Fresh/Soph’s playing, but are still winning.

My point is a win is a win. Do you think Florida cried when they barely beat us in ’08? Do you Auburn was whining after they beat us last year? No, they both went on to win National Championships.

So stop crying about winning and calling out the coaches when we are in the national picture, we are winning, and we have youth/depth.

  • Mark

Reposting my comment from another message board for the benefit of those who claim the Hogs aren’t a top 10 team:

In the current BCS Standings, these are teams 11 – 15. Tell me which one(s) should be ranked higher than the Hogs:

    11. Michigan State – lost by 3 TDs to Nebraska today

    12. Va Tech – barely got by Duke today – surely Vandy > Duke

    13. S. Carolina – we’ll know soon

    14. Nebraska – Ok, nice win today

    15. Wisconsin – lost 2 straight

  • JayTownHog

A win is a win. Look at all the positives about our team having confidence to be able to come back when we are down. Look at A&M could easily be us.

I’m just happy we got out of vandy without the small crowd storming the field. We are a top 10 team and continue to be.

  • Jeff Edgmon

LSU..Gimme a break. LSU is going to slaughter Arkansas the way this defense is playing, and the way Arkansas can’t play a complete game. For that matter, South Carolina is going to beat us next week, unless Arkansas can figure out how to run the football better, block better, protect the qb much better, contribute positive things on kickoffs and punt returns, slow down a running game thst went for over 200 on the ground in Knoxville, and probably one of the best receivers in the nation in Alshon Jeffrey. I said it two yrs ago, Arkansas is never going to win. National Championship, and may not ever win the SEC if they don’t get back to playing hard nosed defense.

    • http://www.therazorbackblogger.com/ GonzoHog

Seriously?…and what makes SC so stinkin good they accomplish this feat in Fayetteville?

They’re now minus Garcia and Lattimore. Who’s going to run the ball now and who’s going to throw the ball to A. Jeffery?

Even when they had all their players in tact, they were still no better than AU, and we all know what happened to AU in Fayetteville don’t we?

Teams play different at home in the SEC. We’re one of those teams, so is Vandy.

    • Freewilly

Have you noticed Willy doesn’t do a good job of developing his players (i.e. five star recruit Winston). Some of his best players have come from Junior Colleges, where other D-coordinators have developed them. Arkansas’s D stats from the past 4 years is enough to get rid of Willy. The people of Atlanta said Petrino has now loyalty. How much more loyalty by keeping Willy the past 4 years. Coach Petrino, you have showed your loyalty, now move on and do what you have to for the Razorback nation and FREE WILLY.

  • hogfan1

I don’t see us winning all of the games between now and LSU. We have been living on guts and luck. We wil probably lose to LSU (like everybody else, no shame there) but will still go to capital one or cotton bowl. The problem here is, we wil again be matched up with a very good football team (Oklahoma or Oklahoma State in cotton, or a top big 10 team for the Capital one bowl). I honestly, at this point with no obvious signs of improvement on defense, don’t think we can win in either bowl game. The AD needs to intervene at the end of the season and discuss what improvements we need with coach Petrino. Spending millions on a new sports office complex. Give me a break. Let’s think here, what would help our football program more: Having a megaplex for the athletic coaching offices or maybe, and I may be going out on a limb here, getting a proven defensive coordinator?

  • redhog1

arkansas……..thrives….in the”underdog” role….let the espn ”experts”…..say what they will….we do great with the kids we get….go hogs!

  • Defense Wins Champio

With this economy, what is Long thinking by proposing a huge unnecessary bldg. program? Raised tickets out the roof and still wants more. He needs to be told to get another job. He gave away the safe for a basketball coach. He does not seem to undestand that the wolves…not red ones…are at the door.

  • Defense Wins Champio

Vandy defense looked quite good and has been very good most of the season. I believe our luck turned because Vandy coach became conservative in 4th. If you watched the game, you would swear that Vandy was winning but on the scoreboard. Big Mo generally stayed with them.

  • redhog1

lest we forget……auburn shoulda had two losses last year.but because clemson and tenn. Couldnt convert field goals..yet with a lotta luck they won a national championship..wonder what the odds on that ocurring would be?……lucks part of the game..
