Arkansas 49, Tennessee 7

ESPN.com: Arkansas whips Tennessee to stay alive in SEC West

Dennis Johnson accounted for 140 total yards and a pair of touchdowns to help No. 8 Arkansas beat Tennessee 49-7 for its sixth consecutive victory.

Great to finally see a complete game from the Hogs! I think they’re going to need to do it again next week against a tough Mississippi State team.

They had better. The human vote in the BCS rankings certainly aren’t doing them any favors.

Wally Hall thought that this was a trap game. I didn’t. The MSU game is a trap game. The ‘Dogs can be tough to score on. Normally MSU would be looking ahead to Ole Miss but the Rebs are in such disarray Mullen probably thinks it’s a lock and he has no need to get the “Dogs looking ahead. Nutt himself has not emphasized the MSU rivalry game because he is not in the Ole Miss culture (helps to explain the last two losses to the ‘Dogs). **

LSU still thinks of Ole Miss as a border war and will probably mop the floor with the Black Bears this week. Miles realistically realizes that only the Hogs stand between the Tigers and the National Championship game. My impression is that Miles always underestimates the Razorbacks and it has cost him. This year I’m sure his emphasis will be more serious for that last game. It will definately be different. Even a loss in SEC championship game would probably not keep LSU out. A loss to Arkansas, hmmm.

For this week, I am thinking that Mullen is looking at the Hog game as a statement to recover a disappointing season and get to a decent bowl. Hogs better be ready and not be spellbound by the BCS standings and get caught looking ahead. Fortunately the game is in Little Rock but the fans really need to get behind the team and rock War Memorial. I didn’t watch the Bama-MSU game so I can’t comment on the play of either team, enthusiasm-wise. LSU looked like it was going through the motions and did what it does every game, wear you out and the 3rd and 4th quarters are theirs. It was no different with W. KY.

**Given any one game in the season that one would want to win, for Nutt that’s Arkansas, of course.

The Ole Miss decision makers have got to be the most absolutely and incredibly dumbest people on the earth.

Why not just play this thing out with Houston Nutt, rather than tell him he’s fired after the season?

Hell, he would’ve at least gotten them a win or two if he had something to pump his team up about.

That team is officially mailing in the season down there in Oxford…..idiots!

You’re right. On the surface it looks irrational. But when you are dealing with anger combined with passion people may not think straight. I would assume that the anger and frustration with Nutt was so great that Ole Miss simply wanted to be done with Houston. They felt the season was lost anyway. Consider that the Rebs have to face MSU and LSU at the end and that they could have cared less about the LA Tech game. I’m not sure if Nutt could have beaten the two SEC opponents or even the LA Tech Bulldogs even without his firing. However, don’t count the Nutter out just yet. He may have one more bolt left in him. He does have to consider that if he ever gets another shot at a good coaching job that it will depend upon him showing he can suceed in the face of adversity. The game with MSU will be that last chance. I suspect he will get himself and his team skyhigh for that one and may catch the ‘Dogs not ready enough. Unfortunately, that doesn’t help Arkansas if Mullen is looking at the Hogs as a statement game. Coach Davies (I believe it was) said that emotion is overated in college football… except for one game or even just a half, but afterwards emotion can carry you only so far. I think that was somewhat proven by Ole Miss’ record after the Arkansas game.

For the record, Arkansas did the same thing with Nutt except that was before a bowl game with a national audience. But Nutt had a golden parachute coaching job with Ole Miss and now the chute looks to made of lead, albeit gold-plated.** I noticed that the same crowd that guided the Hogs

to an ignominius defeat against Missouri are still with Nutt. At least Lee and that head defensive coordinator (what’s his name again – I have purposely blocked it out) are still with him. No wonder the Rebs have done so poorly lately.

**Legally, taxwise, that 6 million is only worth 3 million because bonuses and gifts (and lottery winnings) are taxed at 50%. Unless there are legal beagles who beat the system with advantages the rest of us don’t have. I saw that Sandusky recieved a buyout from Penn State for 150, 000. which would be translated to 75,000 before State taxes. A friend of mine was offered the same deal with the advice that he consult with his tax attorney (There is a way to reduce the tax bite but only with the University’s compliance) How much Nutt will really be walking away with will be unknown, but I’ll bet he won’t get the University to voluntarily to work with him on reducing the buyout taxes. But who knows?
