ESPN.com: Tennessee 77, Arkansas 58

Jordan McRae came off the bench to score 14 points as Tennessee beat Arkansas 77-58 on Wednesday night.

    But expected.

It’s hard to figure these guys out. I honestly don’t understand why a group of young men will just lay down and let another team beat them like a drum just because the game is being played on an unfamiliar court.

Did the players not give even decent effort during the game? Less than their usual sloppy, uninspired road play, I mean.

      That would be unexpected.

The effort looked to be mediocre. It seemed like they had already accepted not only defeat, but a beat down before the game ever started. The body language, and other intangibles seemed to indicate their attitude was “OK guys, we’re away from home so lets go get our brains beat out and get this thing over with.”

Hogs were out of snyc from early on, committing turnovers which were being converted, while TN was hitting everything they threw at the rim. I think TN hit their first five 3-point shots. That’s hard to do against anybody. So the Hogs fell behind early, 20 or so by the 10-minute mark, and were never able to close the gap to make it competitive. If the teams had gotten off to a more even start the Hogs might have kept it close. TN came out hot and we came out cold and that’s how it went. Sometimes when it aint workin’ for ya it just ain’t workin’. You gotta keep hustling and playing and shooting and trying to improve. They won’t let ya quit just because you’re losing.

Freshmen, Freshmen, Freshmen. Still playing like that on the road. Still cannot believe the 360 degree turn when on the road

I’m gonna get blasted for this I’m sure, but this is all due to officiating. Even through TN was hot early, the officials lame intential foul call when Nobles was clearly going for the ball, and numerous calls that sent TN to the line early contributed to them getting a big lead early. And when the Hogs started their run to get it to 10? The officials quit calling fouls on our drives to the basket, called touch fouls on us on the perimeter, etc.

I recall reading yesterday a quote from CMA saying TN played tough defense. If that’s the case (and we’ve generally been giving CMA credit for being pretty smart about such things), so I’m wondering if maybe TN had something to do with the Hogs lack of success.

I can’t tell by watching whether one teams offense is bad or the other teams defense is good. If Ark forces TN into a shot clock violation, we give Hogs all the glory. But when Hogs suffer a shot clock violation, it’s said to be a lack of effort by our players (or poor coaching). I don’t understand how that works. You guys obviously know more about watching basketball than I.

Blast you, soupdhog, these are SEC officials, best of the best. They would never, you know, like, call a game unevenly. These are professionals, and basketball refs have a reputation for calling it straight a lot of the time, and they don’t take payoffs THAT often. You are probably just a biased Arkansas fan. If you were a TN fan you wouldn’t have noticed a thing wrong.
