Help Up Front

Much has been made about the all-star staff that Bret Bielema has assembled at Arkansas.  The early returns are starting to show.

Jonathan Luigs (AP Photo/Reinhold Matay)The late push the Hogs seem to be making with offensive line recruits has been nothing short of remarkable.  New offensive line coach Sam Pittman has to be feeling better.

The commitment Saturday from Honolulu, Hawaii 4-star offensive lineman Reeve Koehler (6-3, 315, 5.2), and the official visit by 6-10, 295-pound tackle Dan Skipper from Arvada, Colorado have Razorback fans buzzing.

Both of these players were being recruited by Pittman to Tennessee before he was thrown out in the wake of the Derek Dooley cleansing.  His approach seems to be working as Koehler referred to him as “like a second father” in an interview with Richard Davenport this week.

And, of course, it doesn’t hurt when Arkansas fans show just how passionate they are.  Friday nights at the Catfish Hole have become a recruiting ‘secret weapon’ of sorts, and when Koehler, Skipper and ten other recruits and their families dined out last Friday Night, everyone commented on how crazy it was.

Koehler looks like a guard type.  Good feet, good hands.  Rivals has him ranked as the #8 guard in the nation.

Skipper, on the other hand, moves really well for being 6-10.  His frame and wingspan are impressive.  He has offers from Ohio State, Michigan, Tennessee, Arkansas and Oklahoma to name a few.

National Signing Day is two weeks away.  If Bielema and staff continue to hammer away, this could turn from being a ‘salvage operation’ to a Top 25 class.

  1. Bielmas record at Wisconsin for developing nfl linemen is a huge plus as well. The focus on the running game is good too…linemen prefer to run block than pass block.

  2. Sounds like good news.

  3. Top 25 class….what brand are you smoking LOL

    • Nothing beats a good smoke, roll-your-own, after a big slug of koolade.

    • Agreed. We may have the 6th best class in the SEC West.

    • The shere numbers may prevent getting into the Top 25, as it appears they probably won’t sign 25. But if they can indeed land/flip a few of these 4-star running backs and lineman, it is possible to jump up significantly from where they currently sit. Who knows.

The 13 signees/commitments is what is holding the current ranking where it is (low 50s).

I can speak first hand about Hawaii football. They have some of the best HS football being played with some big, very strong talent. That use to prop up Michigan State and of course the west coast teams have recruited there heavily. Those high schools have some of the most spirited high school cheering that I have ever heard. They love their football. I use to go and watch a bunch of their teams play and always enjoyed their quality of football and their spirit. He will love the spirit of the Razorback fans!!
