Next Wednesday is like Christmas Day if you are college football recruiting junkies like we are. But the Hogs may know a bit more on Monday what to expect under the tree.
Five-star running back Alex Collins (5-11, 207, 4.4) has decided to announce his college decision on Monday night, and from reports it looks like the announcement will happen live, nationally on Fox Sports at 9:00 CT. Miami and Arkansas appear to be leading at the moment.
Bret Bielema and his new staff have made an impressive push here at the end to turn what was a ‘salvage operation’ six weeks ago into what could be a better than average class.
With recent commitments from some impressive offensive lineman and a quality cornerback last week, the Hogs jumped from the mid-50s in the rankings to the mid-30s. The addition of a superstar running back like Collins and/or North Little Rock’s Altee Tenpenny (6-0, 212, 4.4) certainly could propel Arkansas toward a top 25 finish, which would be remarkable.
No doubt the looming sanctions over the Miami football program as a result of renegade booster Nevin Shapiro’s shenanigans have impacted Collins and his process. Collins, who was committed to ‘The U’ up until last fall, is (rightfully) worried that the Canes are about to get hammered with scholarship reductions and additional bowl bans.
“It’s hard trying to make my decision and trying to guess on how the punishment [will go],” Collins said. ”I’ll try and wait to see what happens and if nothing happens I’ll try and still make my decision.”
Maybe it’s the dreads, but Collins reminds us of a young Marshawn Lynch, with great power and lateral quickness.
Either of these guys, Collins or Tenpenny, could form an impressive 1-2 punch with current Hog running back Jonathan Williams (231 RuYds, 2TDs in 2012). 15-20 touches a game — for each one — sounds pretty appealing.
For all the talk, if Bielema can walk away with some quality offensive lineman, a four-star running back, a four-star quarterback and a four-star tight end, in the same class, you’ve got to feel pretty good about that, especially after getting a late start.
As for next Wednesday, the RazorBloggers are going to be all over the signing day events as they unfold with commentary, photos, and tweets on the newest Hogs. Hope you’ll join us on one of the fun days of the year.
