Arkansas 72, South Alabama 60

ESPN.com: Portis leads Arkansas past South Alabama

Bobby Portis scored 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting as Arkansas held on for a 72-60 win over South Alabama on Saturday night in North Little Rock’s Verizon Arena.

Hmmm. still don’t know what to make of this team. They finally played a Division I team (albeit a sunbelt team) that had good athletes that could match up. Hogs were really inconsistent and Anderson kept looking either frustrated or disgusted. Wonder what he will do when the real competition starts. SEC really looks down this year so you would think the Hogs can make the tournament.

I think the players were a little rusty after a week off taking exams. The inconsistency is perhaps a result of youth, for this is a youngish team. They’ll be good by the end of the season, assuredly. Already a handful of them are playing above expectations, above mine anyway. Portis and Kingsley are producing early; Qualls and Harris and Madden have stepped it up a notch; Bell and Haydar are scoring more than I would have thought. They do have these troublesome scoring slumps halfway thru the second half, and that is a problem Anderson needs to address. Like you say, the conference is down this year, so the Hogs should easily get 20+ wins. They need to get a few road wins to solidify their RPI, and I expect them to win practically all home games. Ya gotta admit, they are exciting to watch, at times.

youthful yes but still impressive. The moves that Portis has made are amazing and Kingsley, do not sell him short. Harris is tough and solid. What can you say about Qualls but WOW. This team will exceed all expectations by season end. They play well together and should win 2 games in the BIG Dance! It is nice to see such an encouraging coach. Phelphrey seldom patted his boys on the back. Glad have Mike A. Go Hawgs
