Except for the first few minutes, the Hogs played pretty well. But the Hogs fell behind early, and playing from behind uses a lot more energy than playing from the front. The Hogs already had a short turnaround from Thursday’s road game, so fatigue may have been the difference in the game.

In the larger scheme of things this game might not have mattered much for the Hogs, their ticket in the conference tournament having already been punched and a berth in the NCAAs assured. The loss may affect the Hogs seeding in the latter field.

Or could it be that this team is just not ready for tournament play? Maybe a few days of rest will rejuvenate their spirits and get them going again. The main problem is that those who are not contributing should not be that tired, given that the usual suspects are scoring all the points.

Good post,With the players and potential this team has one would think we would do well in the tourney, but the cold shooting spells we continue to see often makes me wonder how far we will go.lots of missed shots and ft’s in the LSU game.we need a backup plan when these slumps occur, coach A should demand that qualls, madden and beard drive to the basket everytime they touch the ball.thats the only answer I can come up with to solve this ongoing problem.when the shots are’nt falling, you have to take it to the hole!
The LSU game is one that we should have won especially at home.I think we were fatigued and let our guard down again.LSU is a good team but if the hogs were playing the game they’re capable of,theres no way LSU could beat us.that game may not have mattered much but it was a dissapointment because we can play so much better.I was proud of how the hogs closed the gap towards the end,and thought we would pull off another nail biter.
Also proud of the progress we’ve made this year but we still have a few kinks to work out.
On to the sect and then the big dance!…WPS…GHG!!

I agree with you about Qualls, Madden, Beard, etc…, driving to the basket more when shots aren’t falling. We presently have no great shooters on this team as we have had in the past. A lot of very good athletes, but no great shooters to speak of, not to mention inconsistancy at the FT line.
I always remember Nolan talking about Kareem Reid’s shot not falling, but still reminding him to “keep shooting….keep shooting”. Never really understood that philosophy. Seems like we’re still trying to justify it somehow.
Basketball is a game of wit as much as it is athleticism. The great teams have both when they’re at their best. It’s about time we start understanding this.

        • hogNTexas says:

Totally agree! No real shooters on this team. That should be a major concern going into the tourneys. We definitely have great athleticism but no hot hand to go to when were cold. Portis is our go to man but he’s not on the floor to be a long shooter and one man wont win every game.he is an amazing player down low and deserves every ounce of respect he recieves but we need more attempts for the easy layups.
I would love to see madden, qualls and beard drive to the hoop more. We have to have an answer for the cold shooting spells we constantly experience and taking the ball to the hole is the only solution since we have no long range reliability.
It seems that when one of our shooters go cold the whole team struggles and then our scheme is ( go to portis ) and sometimes they bypass that option and keep jacking up bricks when they should be slicing through the defense to get the easy shot.
I dont understand why we’re still not seeing this happen. I know we have the talent to drive it in but it seems like this whole team prefers to take the off balance shots or long shots and/or 3 pt shots instead. Its perfectly ok to take the shots when we’re hot but that isnt always the case.
Coach MA is doing a fantastic job getting the hogs back to stardom but I wish he would stress the importance driving the lane when our shots are’nt going down.
I hate harping on this subject over and over but it gets frustrating sometimes knowing that we have the ability to slice up the defense and score more points.Imo madden and qualls should be attempting to do this much more often.and yes, improve on the f.t.’s also, that should be corrected during practice.
If we could just learn to take the ball to the hole more, this team could be unstoppable!
So,thats my predictable “hogrant” for the day.GHG!!..WPS!! BEAT Tenn.

This loss has been coming for awhile. They had better get some energy and focus or they could fall flat at tournament time. We’ll see what kind of late season coach Mike is now.

    • I agree, they’ve been playing on the edge for too long. Sooner or later finding a way to win at the end doesn’t work out. Kind of like the fastest 40 doesn’t work out if you race down the court and throw up bricks while the other team is hitting every shot. Instead of learning from mistakes, they seem to keep repeating them. The potential is there, if they can hit on all cylinders when the engine is running.

    • Yes, you could see this coming for two weeks or more. During that time I tried to moderate and limit my comments to avoid upsetting the sensitivities of some of the more delicate Hogfans who occasionally post here. Earlier in the season I thought the bench would develop into a reliable source of relief for the starters, but that hasn’t happened yet. Now we’re into uncharted waters for Anderson’s Hogs. If my hunches continue to be correct, bitter lamentations will soon arise among fans of the sharp-spined swine.

      • This is Bobby Portis’ Rickety Ride, not one of the great hawgball teams. We don’t have great guard play. Madden is really a 3, maybe a 2. Beard has added a great deal for a freshman. Bobby Portis ain’t leading scorer and player of the year for nothing.
But, all those wins and second seed in the conference didn’t come from nowhere. This is a good team. Yes, they’d better be ready for more of what they got from LSU and they’d better feed Bobby every chance they get. They will get as far as Bobby will carry them. I do wish Mike would play the bench a bit more. There is real talent sitting over there.

One thing that sticks out to me is we are missing a true dependable shooter, aka Thurman, Dillard, Bradley.

Without a dependable shooter, the game totally depends on us being able to find a hot hand – Bell, Beard, Harris. If none of those are hot – we are in trouble. We have to have an outside threat in order to keep the defense honest, coming out to guard the perimeter. No dependable shooter, and no hot hand outside = the basketball version of loading up the box. Zone defense, keep Portis covered up and make us jack threes all game long.

Bell has kept us in games by getting hot for a short while. Beard and Harris have done the same. But we don’t have a dependable shooter right now.

We have to find a way to break the zone. High post, low post.

I really can’t complain. We are going to the dance. Tournament play is completely different. Nobody likes to play us, our style, and that feeds our intensity. That makes our guys play harder and our style work better. It will be great to play Wofford, or Baylor, or even Virginia and see where we are.

Then we all need to pray that for some crazy reason, Big Bobby Portis comes back for one more year.

I think that the team was taking this one easy. I mean, what were they playing for really? Sure they want to win them all, but there wasn’t anything on the line so they were a bit relaxed. The SEC tourney will align their seed in the NCAAs so now it’s for real. They want a SEC championship and will have their eye on UK – I just hope they don’t overlook anyone before that point.

This has been a great season, the best in a long time – we are back on the right direction and will be a tough beat in the post season. Nobody wants to play us right now.

Looking ahead, I hope Mike can lure Portis back. Can you imagine next year with him and the rest of the talent on this team? Good lord almighty.
