Can anybody explain to me why Coach Heath felt like he could play fast and win against Mike Anderson and Missouri? As Nolan used to say “We set the bait, and the rat took the cheese.” Missouri baited us into playing fast, and Stan fell for it. Instead of slowing the pace, working the ball inside, getting to the foul line, we got quick shots, sloppy passes, and more turnovers than can be counted. It was an embarrassment.
Some of you want to talk about the football team getting out-coached on occasion…that game last night, my friends, was the definition of “out-coaching” someone. Mike Anderson taught Stan Heath a lesson he won’t soon forget. And one other thing…Mike did it with a cast of rejects from the Quinn Snyder era against our team; against a coach in his fifth year, with 8 upperclassmen.
Oh for the days when we could run someone into the ground like that. Fun to watch…just not last night.
My thoughts exactly. As I watched last night I thought "And we're unhappy with the football coach". I think we got what we deserved last night. We wrote off Mike Anderson because of his connection to Nolan, but the problem with Nolan wasn't coaching ability. It was the fact that he'd gone nuts and paranoid somewhere along the way. You get the team you deserve as we did when we used to boo Hatfields 9 and 10 win teams because they weren't exciting enough.(This isn't a call for a return to the "Hambone") For our efforts, we got Jack Crowe and a loss to the Citadel. So as we sit and talk about how bad our coaches are, take a moment to think back to 1992 and the instant classic loss to a 1-aa team and remember that there are worse things than 10-2 and a trip to the conference championship.
I also watched last night with my head down as we turn the ball over and over again. I just don't understand what these kids have been learning up to this point if its not taking care of the ball I am still excited to watch this season because I do see sparks of a good team with the development of some key players but 20+ turnovers a night just want get the job done.
Sunshine… I knew there was a reason we get along… My thoughts exactly. Made me remember why I wanted Mike Anderson as coach, but I know Nolan ruined that for him. I hope one day when Frank is retired or resting in Heaven and someone else is AD that we can get him back here.
But, I loved watching it last night. It was actually fun again to watch an exciting basketball game even if we did get pounded. To me, we have the better players hands down… maybe not every position, but top to bottom we have the better players on paper, but that style of bball allows less talented teams to win against more talented teams. Man, I miss it.
