Curtain…Bring Down The Lights
December 2, 2006 by HogBlogger
Just back to my hotel from the game.
You can’t give up two touchdowns on special teams and expect to win a championship game. In a way, it’s just that simple.
This was a weird game. Momentum changes, interesting plays from both teams, good defenses for the most part (Arkansas got tired late in the third quarter), and errors from both teams. Three different Razorbacks threw touchdown passes and four different players line up at quarterback. Five players throw touchdown passes in the game — only two were actually quarterbacks.
I’ve got to hand it to Urban Meyer. That fake punt was beyond brave and fearless. Still, we don’t muff the punt and I like our chances.
A bunch of sad little Hogs around here tonight.
Just heard ESPN say Florida had the toughest strength of schedule in the nation. They have a huge claim on the National Championship game in my opinion.

Once again Casey Dick (and others) struggled yet Nutt doesn’t nothing significant (besides lose the two most important games of the year).
There are just way too many “how could you…?”s in this game. Like I said a couple of weeks back when Nutt went into his bonehead strategy… look out Cotton Bowl… here we come!
I don’t see how you can put this game on Nutt. How is it his fault that we gave up two special teams touchdowns?
Our offense and defense played good enough to win. On offense, we finally used other WR’s. On defense, we didn’t mix up zone and man coverage at all. That hurt.
Bottom line is our special teams lost us the last two games. Simple as that.
This was a strange game, alright. My emotions are definitely mixed. It’s interesting where and when Urban Meyer chose to run the fake punt. It’s hard to argue with success but if that hadn’t of worked, most would have said that was one of the stupidest coaching decisions of all time. Even though it did work, the risk to benefit just wasn’t there. Of course it all worked out for the gators when we dropped the punt. I agree that special teams lost this game for us but in so many ways more than just the dropped punt:
inability to make a field goal
inability to punt effectively
fear to kick off deep and/or ability to kick deep
inability to block on special teams
inability to stop a fake punt
inability to fair catch punts
That’s enough to make anyone physically ill. On the other hand, I admire the team’s heart and unwillingness to give up. I wonder how we’ll look back on all of this down the line.
All things being equal — personnel-wise — Nutt gets outcoached in the close games. We will end the year losing three in a row. I saw this coming after the LSU loss. Coaching had more to do with the losses than the players miscues.
