Hogwired.com: Houston Nutt Signing Day Press Conference Transcript

Nutt: “There are young men that are very excited to be Razorbacks. We are very proud of them. We had 18 committed at one time and there was a little bit of negativity that went out. I am happy to say that, of those 18, only one slipped off to Alabama. The other 17 stayed very firm and so committed to being an Arkansas Razorback.”

“…a little bit of negativity went out.” Hilarious.

    SportingNews sums it up best…

    Top school - Florida
    Biggest surprise - South Carolina
    Biggest disappointment - Arkansas

Maybe I’m wrong here, but I think with our success this year (granted Florida and LSU both did very well too), and our run to the top five during the year highlighted the SEC and made a lot of kids want to play in this conference. But, instead of going to Arkansas, they chose to go to LSU, Tenn, Florida, SC, or Auburn. It almost seems like our success hurt us because we helped our closest competition.

SC hiring Superior is going to pay off beyond their wildest dreams. Houston and Frank seem determined to lower our standards until we are a TCU or a Texas Tech, except boring of course. It is hard to fathom. Houston has never had much of an eye for talent although you have to give him credit for a few here and there. We are just so lucky that Arkansas has produced Matt Jones, Shawn Andrews, Darren McFadden, Peyton Hillis, and Markus Monk who want to be Razorbacks and give us a chance to compete. Imagine what we could accomplish with some QBs and recievers to go with this bunch.

A big tribute to our coaching staff that has the ability to take player on the O’line/D-Line/Linebackers/Defensive Backs & Running Backs and make them better. Now that we have a Quarterback Coach, maybe we can do the same thing with that position.

I can’t help but wonder watching all of this play out over the last 9 years if Joe Ferguson wasn’t the real missing piece as far as both the offense and QB development. Things have never been close to the same after he left.

Placing ratings on recruits is an inexact science and really, just a guess. There are probably just as many one-, two-, or three-star athletes playing in the NFL as there are 4- or 5-stars, if not more. The goal in any recruiting season is to fill the needs. It looks like we did that pretty well on the o & d-lines, rb, qb, lb, and kicking game. Our most important signee may be Mr. Tejada. We would have probably won at least 2 of the last three games with him kicking. It continues to amaze me that there is still so much negativity being displayed by our fans. People get on these boards and post hate-filled diatribes, want to fire everybody, want to blame everybody, and then complain about the ranking of our class. I really don’t know if recruits read any of the garbage spewed forth on these boards, but if they do, then it’s got to be a turnoff. However, I do know that our coaching staff is better than one that could be assembled from the group of posters who spend most of their time enlightening the masses with their vast knowledge of the short-comings of the Hogs, coaches, JFB, etc.

I thought the class was about like we always get. A handful of very good ones, and a bunch that we’ll have to develop. The one need area that Coach Nutt admitted they fell short on was cornerback. They were on some good CBs late that went elsewhere, and that left them with the “leftovers” at a need position.

With Chris Houston gone, CB could be a sore spot next year in an otherwise talented defense. Guys like Jarrell Norton have the skills, but are a bit on the “green” side.

TaxHawg if your lurking out there, I’m interested in your take on this class. You follow recruiting much more than most.

Bill King, Rivals Radio, has said this many times over the past few days.

“Teams that recruit top players, win football games”

We did not get committments from the best in Arkansas, much less the nation (no rivals 100 or even 250) which says something about the state of this program. Recruits are shying away, not because of anyone from sprindale, but because they feel that the person or persons in their living room are talking out of both sides of their mouths.

HDN obviously does not have the relationships he should have with statewide HS coaches. If they believe he is a snake oil salesman, then we will keep getting shun’d by the ArDemGaz top 30.

Houston is losing it, and we as fans will suffer because of it.

Hog in Iowa thank you for a good post. I agree full heartedly with you. Most of these guys probably never played the game and coached at the local boys club and now think they are experts. Thank you again for you post

  11. BlindHog on February 8th, 2007 12:14 pm

I’m sorry the so called negativity is upsetting to some. Personally, I always try to be positive whenever possible. I find it very important in all areas of life and relationships. It was Houston’s big deal when he first arrived, Mr. Positive. Unfortuneately, positive can not replace honesty or poor choices. When you try to replace those with positive you just get self destructive. Many believe that we are caught in a downward spiral because of the unwillingness of those in power to positively and honestly address poor choices made in the program. If we love the hogs we must speak out. Sorry. Sooner or later one group will be proved right or events will move on with no resolution. Being positive, I believe that we will make the tough choices and succeed.

When you don’t have a highly rated recruiting class you start talking about hidden gems.

  13. 2tourhog on February 8th, 2007 1:59 pm

Nice Post Blind Hog. You seem to be one of the few who actually have their eyes open. It’s not about negativity, it’s about reality. We did not get a top recruit from AR, and we did not get a top 250 from Rivals. Those are facts. The only people you can point the finger at are the coaches. It’s their job to sell UofA to the recruit, and it should be a easier sell to someone who has been a Hog fan all thier life. Ziemba and Burns are going to Auburn, because they both want to go where their talent will be best shocased, and where they will have the best chance to win, according to the SEC analyst on Rivals, not because of the soap opera. If players don’t believe they will be a part of something great, then they will go elsewhere. A couple of more clases full of players “with alot of heart” who are “special” like this one, and we are back to the 4-7 days of mediocrity.

I was born and raised here, I am a 2 time alumni of the University of Arkansas. My family has had season tickets since we moved to Fay from LR in 1977. I am a fan, and will always be a fan. I want what is best for the program and the school. It is time for change. We need a coach who carries himself with dignity and class, and is respected throught the state and country as true man of Integrity. LIke it or not, that man is not HDN.

  14. d.black on February 8th, 2007 3:15 pm

right on tour hog. I am a hog fan and always will be. I live out of state La. These high school kids talk to each other and say the coaching staff at Ark. is a joke. I work with fans from La. Miss.,Tex.,Ala. They all talk about the lack of integrity of the Ark. coaches. They to spin the blame onto 17yearold kids. They are the ones that lied and back stabbed one coach. The A.D. said all we can expect is lower teir in the SEC. They do not want any difference maker recruits because they would not have any excuse for not winning. I predict 2 wins in the sec this year. Get to the root of the problem HNand FB.

  15. Kendallp on February 8th, 2007 3:47 pm

Just becuase I refuse to slander coaches does not mean I have my head in the sand or I refuse to accept reality. I do speak out. But I do so in a manner that is less public, and less slanderous. Let me try to speak out publically against my company and see how much good it does my company or me. Let me continue to carry a negative disposition around my family and see what good it does me or my family. Let me do the same in my church, or civic group, or friends, or whatever. I will let people know when I am upset. But I will not skewer the boys on the hill that are there and like it. I will not make it worse for them. And I will not be a party to creating an atmosphere that keeps other athletes from wanting to be there.

  16. Brad on February 8th, 2007 5:22 pm

What high school kid in his right mind would want to come to Arkansas and deal with the negative fans?

  17. ReasonRules on February 8th, 2007 6:07 pm

No worries, Houston can take every 3 star and make him into a 5 star. I wish he would recruit a little better so he wouldn’t have to work so hard at finding those hidden gems.

  18. ReasonRules on February 8th, 2007 6:13 pm

    Brad,
Take a look at track, most fans don’t even care and look at what they do every year. People were starting to sour a little on baseball and look at what Dave Van Horn has done. I’m tired of everybody slandering Houston when it isn’t his fault and making excuses for him when he doesn’t perform as well. It is about as intelligent as an argument between two 3 year olds.

  19. OwassoHog on February 8th, 2007 7:31 pm

ReasonRules, Houston has made his own bed… as the head coach, he has to take responsibility for the overall success or failure of the football program. Out of 9 years, he’s really only had 1 great season. This past year - and it crumbled before the season ended.

Folks need to face the facts… Houston will NOT get the job done! Why after 9 years are people thinking that Houston is going to change? The one year that things looked promising - it all fell apart at the end. Much (but not all) is directly related to how Houston ran the team. Lee will NOT make a difference either… if he would, we could look at the years that he was here with Houston and see it… it just isn’t going to happen!

This isn’t being negative… it’s called REALITY!!! Maybe we just need to have a show called Coaching Idol! So that Houston and Frank will get the message!

This is a Sad Day For Gary D Mitchell SR… Why? Because I’ve been a HOG FAN since I was 8 Years old and use to lay in bed at night and listen to the My Hogs play football back 3811 No. 6 th Street in Fort Smith, AR. Mom would come in at night and tell me to turn the Radio down… and being a good son I would…. But every time Arkansas Scored… Lets just say… Mom didn’t understan Football… and I would have to go to sleep… But I remembered Dad saying… If that Frank Broyles was to run for govener of Arkansas he would beat Faubus and Rockfeller…. It’s sad… That a man like Coach Frank Broyles can’t see his own Greatness and pass it on…. Now For The Sad Part Folks…. Great Coaches, Great Men & Great Women see weakness in great old leaders and move on…. I disagree with Coach Frank Broyles when he says Arkansas is such a small state that it can’t bring in Great Coaches…. Let me just name a few I have seen in my last 53 years.. Frank Broyles, Ken Hatfield, Eddie Suttun, Nolan Richarson, Lou Houtz, Houston Nutt…. Sometimes I wonder how far Coach Frank Broyles would of got if the Athletic Director that hired him had the Same EGO! That Athletic Director Frank Broyles has today…. Boys & Girls…. Being A Head Coach at Arkansas is like being a head coach for the Dallas Cowboys…. You only have the Tittle and not the respect… Why do you think Lou Houtz, Ken Hatfield, Eddie Suttun left… Why do you think Nolan went through Hell…. and Hell I’m a White Man… Fans… My Question to all my Hog Friends out there…. What are ya’ll going to do… They went through this in Georgia and ended it quietley…

  21. Defense Wins Championships on February 13th, 2007 9:22 pm

Question: What are “Ya’ll going to do”.
    Answer: Just winning football games!

Houston Nutt took inferior talent (according to all of the so called recruiting gurus) and whipped teams with so called superior talent. We did so with less than a full cupboard of scholarships! Anyone remember that? Defense wins championships, and Offense is coming along nicely. Now, with a proven assistant coach (Lee), we will get on track offensively. We will do it with class. Too bad we do not have more classy fans! As my out of state daughter said, “You have whiney fans!”
