I feel bad for Stan and his family. These past few weeks and the next few are going to be tough on them. The writing is on the wall and barring a major run in the SEC Tourney to get to the "real" tourney he'll be gone.
Now, I hear Dudley and Chuck saying we'll spend the money to get a top notch "name" coach and apparently Bill Self and Billy Gillespie (not to be confused with the country singer) are the top candidates. I would prefer Self. I thought he should've been our coach after Nolan left, but circumstances prevented that. Timing is everything and this could be the best timing for us. He knows full well now how hard it is to replace a legend (see Roy Williams), but I'm sure he is also aware it's a lot easier to replace the guy that replaced the legend. Therefore, I think this situation is PERFECT for him and even though Kansas is playing very well it is no secret that things are not all peachy in Kansas… come on Bill… Home is in FAYETTEVILLE!
I'll take Billy G, or Self. We just need to make the right decision and hope that Beverly stays.
Stan is really nice but it is time for a change. He has not brought the best out in any of his players.Maybe a few more years at alesser school.Im just sure its time for all of us to move on.
HogBaller, you were right. You said he probably wouldn't make it, and I thought he would, given the upheaval in the AD spot. But I think he's not going to make it now. You notice Chancellor White didn't bother to give Stan the "vote of confidence" this week when issuing the press release on Nutt.
It's been awhile since I heard a few boos in BWA. At the end of the game, those that were there at the end, let a few boos trickle out. 24 turnovers were painful to watch.
I tell you though, for a team that was 5-8 and coming off a bad loss at Auburn, an active crowd of 17,200 tells you that we still have the "potential" to get it going again…given the right guy at the top.
Guys, we probably need to be realistic here… we can't accord to pay for an "reitred" AD, 2 basketball coaches (Nolan and Stan), and a football coach. Given those choices, I'm all in favor of keeping Stan and letting the rest go. Unless Stan leaves on his own, I'd focus my energies on other dead weight in the program! They've already proven they can't get the job done and well, with Stan, there's always the "potential" to do it… with time!
Sunshine – No way there were 17,000… no way. MAYBE 13,000… that was the most empty seats I've seen in BWA at this time of year since the year Nolan "took his money and went home".
Stan Heath has been an excellent recruiter, however, the direction of his teams have not stayed on the course he had planned for them for one simple reason, disipline. Stan may have all the knowlege he needs for the HC job, but it is obvious he has no fire in him. Does anyone else see this? He seems to be a very intelligent, likable, and class guy, but does not have the attitude, when needed. I’ll tell you what these kids need. A 6 week camp, down in Lubbock, Tx, with “you know who”, doing the coaching. Maybe after you get yelled at, with a finger against you eyeball, have a metal chair hurled at you, and be on the recieving end of a couple of head butts, these kids might start paying attention to the game plan, and stop bickering at each other as we seen Gary Ervin and Stefon Welsh do late in the Tennessee game. Getting a boot in your rearend from time to time, is all part of growing up, taking responsibility, and gaining respect from people who know more than you do.
Yes, Stan Heath is a very nice guy. He has great ability to recruit excellent players; he just doesn’t know what to do to get the most of them when he gets them. He would make an excellent assistant for a large division I program, and with more experience, he might make an excellent Head Coach one of these days. Right now, he needs to go for the good of the Razorback program. I’m sure that Stan realizes that he has not done the job expected at the university and would walk away without the problems that Nolan caused when he was dismissed.
I would not think; however. that Bill self would be willing to walk away from Kansas for Arkansas unless he feels that he is in trouble with the fans. Kansas is a much more respected program, with a great tradition, than Arkansas. Most would be view this as a step down for Self.
