Ryan Malashock: Arkansas Offers Job To Memphis’ Calipari

Arkansas athletic director Frank Broyles offered the Razorbacks men’s basketball job to Memphis coach John Calipari on Friday in Atlanta, sources close to both basketball programs said Saturday.

The sources said Calipari can now be considered Arkansas’ top target for the position that opened when Stan Heath was fired Monday. The source in Arkansas said Calipari was interested in the position and would mull over the offer.

I’m reading some interesting stuff out there in the virtual world. Signing Calipari would be a huge grab. His persona tends to rub me the wrong way, but I definitely think he could take this program to the next level.

Hiring Calipari would bring immediate national credibility and attention to the Razorback program. I think he would also be able to heal the wounds on this team.

  2. Hogsdill says:

I totally agree with HogBaller on Calipari’s persona. He just seems like a coach that likes to bend the rules. His entire Memphis team seems like a bunch of gangsters.

I do think he’d bring a national spotlight. And I think he’d bring that up tempo style that many fans are wanting.

If I was hiring, Calipari wouldn’t be on the top of my list.

Great coach! but I think almost everyone agree’s about this guy’s persona. Isn’t this the same guy that didn’t want to continue the series with the UofA anymore, about 5 years ago? This kinda rubbed me the wrong way too. His personality kind of reminds me of Rick Pitino a little bit, only a little bit more arrogant. Maybe I just didn’t want to hear the cold, hard truth back then. Maybe I was still looking for somthing good to hang on to about Nolan Richardson. Calipari’s comments about the Hogs not being the caliber of competition they used to be were true. At that time, we had our new “token” coach in place, and looked to be on our way down. Maybe Calipari seen this better than we did, since he was in an unbiased position. Also, as much as Nolan raided Memphis in the past, maybe he didn’t want the Hogs in town anymore. This would help keep a new face from re-establishing a good recruiting base in Memphis. Whatever the reason was, maybe this would be the guy to help us turn everything around. There’s no doubt he would have a familiar face in Memphis. Isn’t it ironic that Broyles is now going after the guy that knocked Gillespie’s team out of the tourney? Does anybody know what Calipari’s existing contract looks like? If you look at his resemay, he built a giant at UMASS, and has now put Memphis high upon the national sceen. He is capable of doing anything that Gillespie was capable of doing, maybe more, if the money is right.

  4. Is this an April Fool’s joke Tipster? Calipari?

As much as I have disliked him in the past, he would be a good hire given the other retreads that are being batted around (Altman, Montgomery, Majerus). Like Chris (Yul Brynner) told Vin (Steve McQueen) in “The Magnificant Seven”…”Don’t worry, he’s a good gun, and we aren’t going to a church social.”

Does anybody think we look like our friends at Alabama…trying to “buy our way out of a bungled coaching search”.

BTW, where’s H.R. Haldeman when you need him…we’ve got more “leaks and sources close to the program” than any other school in the nation. We need some plumbers down there at the Broyles Complex.

  5. GONZOHOG says:

On second thought, after reading what the Memphis Commercial Appeal had to say, it’s kind of hard to see Calipari coming to Fayetteville. You don’t make a statement like: “There’s nothing there”, if you are truly interested. He’s alot more specific, with that statement, than Gillespie was about anything. At least he had a comment, instead of trying to work both sides of the offering table. Dana Altman could be our guy. He’s done an excellent job at Creighton, considering the recruiting base he’s stuck with in Omaha, Neb., and Creighton isn’t exactly the name you can sell to a big time recruit, if he has Schools like Arizona, Texas, A$M, Illinois,Arkansas, UNLV, etc…., offering scholerships. He might do well here.

  6. 10KHog says:

Gonzo! You’re Right! You just made me remember why I didn’t like him so much. It wasn’t because of his persona or that he caused UMASS to pull down their Final Four banner… it was because he ended the series with us because he wanted to play a “Bigger Name”. Now, he’s thinking about coming here? What’s wrong with Memphis? Are they not big enough for the pretty boy????

This is going to end ugly. I won’t be able to root for this guy. I’ll support the team, but I think if he ends up being our coach we’re gonna regret it and the Herrod deal will look like cake compared to the mess we’ll have with the NCAA. He’s a cheater and I don’t want him here.

  7. Forgive me, but Dana Altman doesn’t make me want to run out and buy some more season tickets. He is about what we had in Stan, except with 10-12 years additional mediocre results.

    Stan’s record at Arkansas (5 seasons) 82-71, .535.
    Altman’s record at K-State (4 seasons) 68-54, .557.
    Altman’s record at Creighton (13 seasons) 260-141, .648.

By all accounts…nice guy. Sound familiar?

When we cut Stan loose, we said we needed to make a hire to take the program back to national prominance, reinvigorate the fan base, and sell more tickets. Altman is not going to do that.

  8. Seth says:

You’re correct, Altman won’t do that. And the more and more reports I’ve been reading about Broyles’ trip to Atlanta, the more I’m confused. Apparently there was “a lot” of interest for the opening. Oh? Really? Who is interested that’s a big name coach — aside from Majerus? I want to know who else Broyles talked to in the 5 minutes he was there and not watching basketball.

  9. ses says:

Oh, it wasn’t a “big name” coach, just a “big” coach.

  10. GONZOHOG says:

I’m left wondreing now, just how accurate are any of the rumers floating around? Calipari has stated, to contrary belief, the job was never offered to him. He also states that any coach would be a fool to turn down the job, if the oppotunity were right, but there was nothing there for him, and what he and Broyles acctually wound up talking about was other potential candidates. This makes me wonder, just how close are we to finding the right coach?

  11. seth says:

I agree. I think this is taking entirely too long to be a situation where “any coach would be a fool to turn down the job.”

  12. BlindHog says:

I think you guys are missing a point here. With Kentucky open and Florida possibly next some dominos are going to have to fall to get to Arkansas’ turn. It is going to take a while unless we settle. Frank may wait until after the Masters. YOu don’t want him to miss that.

  13. Dieinghog says:

It looks to me that we are the laughing stock among the big time coaches.

  14. BlindHog says:

If we aren’t a laughing stock what are we?

  15. OwassoHog says:

To me, this is about as far from a “big name” as we can get. So much for Frank using his power to attract a big name coach!

    What a disappointment!

  16. Dieinghog says:

Frank is the reason we have to hire these small town coaches I think we would have done better letting White go out and try to hire someone. Everyone has seen the effects that Frank has had on his coaches and this program in the last few years no one wants to work with him even if it is just for a year.
