Report: Broyles Offers Job To Gillispie
March 28, 2007 by TipsterHog
According to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, athletic director Frank Broyles has extended a job offer – to someone who Broyles would not specifically name – to be the new coach of the Razorbacks basketball team. That coach is reportedly believed to be Texas A&M basketball coach Billy Gillispie.
An advance copy of the Democrat-Gazette report was cited in an article that appeared on the San Antonio Express-News web site late Tuesday night:
“We could have a quick announcement,” Broyles told the Arkansas newspaper. “Or it could fall through. I’ve offered the job, and we’re waiting to hear.”
[...] “I have not talked to a single coach,” said Broyles, who retires at year’s end. “But the one I’m trying to get knows I want him to have the job.”
Asked how, Broyles said, “Through channels.”

According to the Dallas and Houston newspapers, A&M ’s BOT won’t vote on a finalisation, on a new contract until Friday. With Gillespie going to Atlanta in the middle of the week, this probably means we won’t hear anything until at least Friday night.
Gonzo, I disagree. He left College Station going to Atlanta where Acie Law IV will be competing in some pre-Final Four stuff. If I had to bet, I’d say he’ll set foot in Fayetteville before he ever returns to Texas. We’ll send the plane to Atlanta to pick him up.
Great timing. Keeps him away from all those geniuses who think that a “yell practice” will keep him in Aggieland. Gotta love ‘em.

I was just telling a friend that if it’s true Gillispie is staying at A&M (and it was in fact he that was offered the job), then it looks like Broyles’ ego finally got the best of him. I’m starting to not be as concerned with the new BBall coach as I am who the next AD will be — because, like Heath, they’re going to have a nice big mess to clean up when they get here.
Now exactly how did Broyles ego get the best of him in this case? By your comment you have to assume that Broyles fired Heath without an agreement from Gillespie. The opposite seems to be true- that there was an agreement and Gillespie is waffling, backing down, or he is being held hostage in his office.
If you have evidence to support this, then I’ll gladly retract my statement. But it’s been widely reported that Broyles has not talked to Billy in person and he doesn’t even have his telephone number — see the blockquote above. It’s one thing to fire a coach and head in a different direction. I’m just afraid that Broyles was mislead and is going to be left out in the cold on this one. The past six months in Arkansas sports has been in a sad state. I just hope we can pull it all back together here soon.
There’s no doubt Gillespie wanted to stay mum while A&M sweetened the pot. Ironically, the practice facility that A&M officials approved to be built, will begin construction on Monday. Gillespie is a home grown Texas boy anyway. With the right contract, he may be very happy where he is, especially with the recruiting class he is supposed to be bringing in.
OOOOOPPPS LOL. Donovan Goes To Kentucky, Gillespie Goes To Arkansas and let the “WARs” begin. But like I said Head B-B Coach Frank Broyles is still funny LOL
