Dave Van Horn Ejection 3 (TipsterHog Photo)

“Earl gave me his version of what happened and asked me not to suspend the umpires.” — Lee MacPhail, former American League President, recounting a meeting with Earl Weaver, whom he subsequently suspended three days for arguing with umpires.

I thought Dave went over the edge——at worst it was a questionable call and this is not the first time it has happened to a Hog batter.

T-towner – I would beg to disagree with your commentary and say that at “best” it MAY have been questionable. At its worst it was a “horrible call” as replays cited by Dave show. And what’s this “not being the first time it has happened to a Hog batter” got to do with Saturday and LSU?

You have to understand that “to be like Earl” you have to know WHEN to pick a fight with an umpire and argue your point when “blue” doesn’t ask for help as all of this happened on his far left – and out front – clearly his lesser eye – “at best”.

Now “T” – notice the ever excellent Tipster photography cleary showing that “to be like Earl” you have to take your hat off so that you can make use of that extra four inches of “in yo face” under “blue’’s bill” that you cannot do with the bill of your hat protruding off the front of your head. What’s more defending your ballplayers is part of “being like Dave”. If you call that going over the edge and winning a ball game 5 – ZIP then so be it. The key is to pick your “being like Earl” moments. That was a classic one. That entire umpiring crew is not long for the SEC and that is also justification for maybe looking over the edge – but he did not go over…

The fact is he was trying to get his team fired up and he did. As a friend of mine pointed out, our former basketball coach could have learned a thing or two from Van Horn. Getting “run” is a science and a skill. Do you really think Van Horn just lost it all of a sudden? I was there on Friday night and I can guarantee you the umpire behind the plate that Van Horn chewed out on Saturday got to reap the “benefits” of his fellow umpire’s mistakes the night before. I didn’t see Saturday or Sunday live, but I heard they were pretty bad as well. All I know is that guy on Friday night should not be a high school umpire, much less a Division 1 college umpire, and after watching the replay on Fox Sports of the Saturday game the umpire on Saturday is not far behind him in his lack of competency.
