Hogwired.com: John Pelphrey Press Conference - Basketball Practice Begins on Friday

Pelphrey: “When you get away from everything else, the bank of microphones and all the lights, and make no mistake that’s what makes Arkansas special, we still have to go out and coach our team.  We have to go out and get prepared.

“Whether it’s here or somewhere else, that’s the same.  We have to make sure we remain focused and don’t get caught up in some outside distractions.  It’s about being organized and playing together as a unit.  You heard me say this about six months ago — this is a dream job opportunity for me.”

I tell you what, the more I hear from our new coach, the more I like him. Sounds like they tried to get him to talk about the poor conditioning of last year’s team, but he wouldn’t say anything negative.

When he starts talking about being selfless, and serving others for the good of the team, I love that. I really hope all of our guys buy into that this season.

We will surely be ranked in the top 20 to start the year don’t you think?

    Walking,
I agree with you. I wonder though with him talking so much about being a close team if that was part of the problem under Heath? It seems like he may not have been to pleased with the team chemistry. What are thoughts on that?

I can shed some light on that subject. The chemistry and conditioning were the main issues, but there were others. From what I’ve heard, these guys are ready to go and I expect a very exciting season.

Stan was a great guy, but as far as organizational skills and motivational skills were concerned, he seemed to be lacking in those areas. This team needed new blood at the top, to pump new life (confidence) into these guys heads, going into their Sr. years. (6 of them) This team has a lot of talent that seemed to be wasted at times last year. If Pelphrey can get these kids to go 100% for 40 minutes, they should be exciting to watch. There’s a couple of things that need to come together for this team to reach thier potential. 1 is disapline, and 2 is making Stephan Welsh the most improved player on this team, to give Gary Irvin that breather when he needs it. Pelphrey will take care of 1, and 2 will pretty much take care of itself. Since Welsh is only a Soph., this is still pretty much up in the air. This team will be good enough to shoot for an SEC tital. It should be an exciting year. GO HOGS GO BABY!!!!!
