I am in Honduras this week and missed listening to the game. But when I saw the score I was sick. I have tried all year to be optomistic about this team and the coach. But I’m ready now for things to change. How can you not close out games? Was our offense that Bad? Did they have DMac trying to run up the gut all night? And where was Felix? My last question then I’m done. Was it the play calling or lack of exacution?
Let us pray…………………….
One more thought then I am done writting………… Maybe Pelphry can give us somethng to root for. Thank God Basketball is just around the corner.
Back to praying………..Lord give us a new coach……Pretty Please
Well it would be hard knock the team’s effort as for the coaching same ole same but Casey did make some throws. We are just talent limited and yes DMAC left, right and up the middle. HopefullyNutt will do the right thing and call it a career at the end of the season, I think Nebraska is going to be looking for a coadh after the season.
What’s up with all the personal fouls on defense. Three in one game. Richardson gets to yell at the coach and stay in the game?
it is not the talent—the talent could be undefeated and sitting at about #2 in the polls right now.
i am always a sunshine pumper, but this team has quit on houston.
too much drama, too much bravado, too much confusion, too much irresponsibility, too much unpreparedness, too much indecisiveness, too much ego, just too much houston.
he has to be removed for the betterment of this program.
thanks for all you did houston, but please, just this once, take the high road and except blame and move on.
if you truly love this university, you know it is time.
We don’t have an offense. We run plays. This is the SEC for goodness sake. It’s just beyond pitiful. We ran off a decent offensive mind to sign Lee to a million dollar deal? What a joke.
I was actually proud of Reggie for most of the game but then when it counted most it had to be all about his manhood again. He had to call the all out blitz after containing them all night with coverage. Another million dollar joke.
I think even Houston’s ego may be on the verge of letting in a little reality and seeing that this really is his fault.
I’ll be picking Ole Miss next week.
“NUTTIN LIKE BEING 0-3 IN THE SEC”!!! I’m glad D-Mac got the rushing record, because that record will be his biggest accomplishment this year. Ole Miss has played everybody tough this year. If ‘Bama didn’t take thier last competitive breath out of them this weekend, they will more than likely beat the Hogs in Oxford. Coach Oreagon is a better offensive mind than Mr. Nutt, and he plays to win, rather than play not to lose. Casey Dick might actually be a little bit better QB than Seth Adams, but it won’t matter because Ole Miss is more offensively balanced than the Hogs, and they are playing at home. Last years 38-3 pounding in Fayetteville has not been forgotten, and that loss was not as dominating as it sounded. The Rebels shot themselves in the foot just as many times as the Hogs ran plays sucsessfully. I’ve watched them play this year, and they are for real. Hogs will lose another close one i’m afraid. This team has no real focus, and plays wrecklessly, to say the least. Personal fouls are at an all time high, and these guys are losing confidence fast. What are we playing for now? Pride? Mr. Nutt, your (our) team is fading fast, with the most talented backfield in the country. What now boss?
semohawg – Excellent post. One of the things though that I don’t think we’ll ever hear HDN say is “it’s my fault.” It’s not in him, he hasn’t said that in 10 years, why start now?
Most coaches will give players all the credit for wins, but will say “this one’s on me” after a loss. Nutt does the first, and gives the players all the credit, but never does the latter.
Did anyone hear Quinn Grovey say in the post game that he thought if we could get Monk back we could run the table? I love Quinn, but enough is enough.
If we’re going to can HDN, let’s at least not pretend we’re going to lure the big name coach. Let’s give somebody their golden opportunity.
I vote for Arkansas native Charlie Strong.
First I would like to say our defense played with a lot of heart and intensity. I havn’t seen them play like that since last season. With that being said, the intensity coupled with the frustration of being 0-2 in sec play led to the stupid personal foul penalties. You have to play intensity, but you have to be able to harness it to be able to play smartly. The frustration of this season didn’t allow that to happen for some of our boys. The defense Seemingly played a great game, but it probably looked better than it truly was.Tommy Tuberville called one of the most conservative games I think I have ever seen Auburn play. It’s like he took the Razorbacks typical game plan. The only difference it worked for Auburn.I feel if Auburn had played like they nomally do it would have been a blowout.Auburn still should have scored more but two missed fg’s and a fumble inside our 10 made the defense look a lot better than they actually were. Our season is officially over with this loss.thank goodness for Fla Int. it very well could be our last win of the season. That is until they get rid of HDN.That will be the biggest win for the razorback nation this season!!!!!!!!!
The defense played pretty well but Auburn did not open up their offense the way they normally do. Why? I don’t know, but I feel sure if they had we would have been well behind by halftime. Casey Dick is just not an SEC quarterback, he can’t pass effectively, doesn’t appear to read defenses and is unable to run when he is in trouble. I know nothing about the backup quarterback , but it would seem that it’s time to give him a shot at running the team. At the very least, he would be gaining experience for next year. Florida International may be the only other team we beat this year. That surely would make us the Champs of the Sun Belt Conference. I feel for Houston with all he’s putting up with, but for his sake as well as the program, it’s time for him to consider moving on after this year. He has become too much of a distraction and none of it reflects positively on the Uof A.
In Alabama they are asking if Tubberville will replace Nutt or Francionne (imagine how pissed War Eagle would be if they missed that field goal).
I too have tried to stay loyal to Nutt, but this is too much to take. Don’t turn around chancellor White, apathy is closing fast. . . .
I haven’t heard the question “Is it basketball season yet?” since the 90’s.
On the way home from the game on Sat nite, on 540. I saw a decal on an SUV that read:
“Houston, we have a problem.”
Anybody know where to find one????
Comments about the game:
1.Arkansas’ biggest problem is that its offensive line cannot dominate. I saw this in the UT-C game. McFadden and Jones should have broken for big gains and with one exception didn’t. I thought either the players weren’t trying or Nutt was playing possum. If the dynamic duo had the holes that the Auburn runners had, the score would have been much different in the Hogs favor.
2.The Hogs defense played very hard but couldn’t contain the Auburn running game. Auburn had little trouble moving the ball between the 20s. Auburn should have had at least two more scores but were shooting themselves in the foot.
3.As one blogger noted, Tuberville was actually coaching Nutt-Ball. But with Auburn it was working. Arkansas had too many 2 and 9, and Auburn too many 2 and 4. If Auburn had lost this game there would have been another Arkansan whose head would have been on the block. Nutt-Ball almost backfired on Tuberville. T-Coach felt that his defense could contain Arkansas’ running game and it did. He also felt that his offense would dominate which it did. He did not want to risk mistakes in the passing game that could cost him the game. Basically, he coached not to lose. And, again I say, it almost cost him.
4.After Arkansas scored, I looked at the score board clock and it read 1:36 and I groaned oh, no. One of the themes of this year’s team should be “ The end of the 4th quarter is theirs!”.
5.The key play in that last minute and a half was actually the attempted corner kick off after the TD that went out of bounds. Tuberville wanted the kick done over. My son asked why T- Coach did that and Nutt earlier did not?. I said Nutt and friends have some strange ideas. The Hogs have two of the best returners in the country and they will more than likely get you past the 35 on a re-kick. I said that Tuberville felt the Hog kicker couldn’t kick the ball far enough and that his returner would get the ball past the 35. T-Coach was right. All the way to the 50. At that point, I gave up. The long pass play getting the Tigers into field goal position was almost as important a play but it was the return that gave Auburn an excellent chance to get in field goal range. In any case the last offensive series for Auburn was 4 down territory all the way. I do not fault Reggie for blitzing on that pass play, the other alternative was letting Cox sit back there and wait for an open receiver. In other words peck his way down field to FG range, which like Wilson and Woodson, he was capable of doing. Speaking of kickers, I have noted in number of college games that more than a few schools have kickers that can still kick into the end zone and beyond. Seems to me it’s a recruiting lapse if you haven’t tried to get someone with that kind of range.
6.On the way back on Sunday, I saw a minivan on I-40 with a chalked ‘We love the Hogs” on the side and on the back window, “We love Houston” (must have been Nutt family member or sarcasm). One of the Auburn supporters told me that rumors in Birmingham have Tuberville going to Arkansas or Texas A & M. Hmmm. I’m not sure why Coach T would want to come to Hogland unless he could get a Saban-like contract. Besides it would be in bad form and looked down upon to immediately jump from one SEC school to another. A short trip to the pros seems to be a prerequisite. I asked one Auburn fan if he would like to trade coaches. He laughed and shook his head no.
7.I think that most people now realize that the woes of the passing game are not Dick’s fault. In the 4th quarter I told people around me that the game was Dick’s to win or lose because we were going nowhere on the ground. Problem ws receivers were not getting open (Hillis excepted, but when your leading receiver is your fullback…?). When in man coverage it looked like the receivers and the Auburn defenders were Siamese twins. Nutt was so desperate, that he used Monk as a decoy on the first Hog series and then Marcus never came back. After the game he said that he was being saved for a fade in the end zone. Only problem was that Arkansas only got into the Red Zone one time. In retrospect, Coach T dared Dick to beat him and he almost did.
8.Lastly, one man’s amateur (very amateur) opinion as to what the Hogs need to do to avoid a 4-8 season. First, McFadden (and even Jones) should realize that the Heisman is out the window. So those players and the coaches should quit worrying about running stats. The coaches need to devise plays to get both runners in space, by receiving if necessary. That’s just throwing it out there (pun intended), but Auburn isn’t the only SEC defense they will have to face. Maybe Nutt should call Tulsa.
“Instead, he said the offensive line must stay on its blocks longer for Darren McFadden and Felix Jones, receivers must make plays in one-on-one coverage and quarterback Casey Dick must make better throws.”
Nutt Promises More Creativity From Offense In Second Half Of Season
Let me see, that would be the QB, O-line, and receivers that are to blame. How about the O-coord having a better gameplan (or at least adjusting better).
“Besides it would be in bad form and looked down upon to immediately jump from one SEC school to another.”
Didn’t slow him up any before but I’m with the crowd that says; “Why in the world would he come here?” We should, as suggested in an earlier post, beat the weeds, give some guy his ‘dream’ shot, and hope we hit a home run like Georgia did with Richt.
Why do we snap the ball with :16 and :11 left on the play clock on that TD drive? How did Dale ever get a job coaching football when he clearly doesn’t understand the game? Put on your cheerleading skirt Coach, that’s what you do best!
Mr. Nutt’s comments on the second half of the season are redicules, but not suprising. He claims he told David Lee to “let it go”, “don’t hold nothing back”, “especially since they are going to start crowding and crowding and crowding the line”. Start? Did you actually say start? Is this to imply that the defenses are going to crowd the line even more than they already do? Oh, I get it. You want the defenses to lose all confidence in our passing game, so they’ll just go ahead and put all thier guys in the box. Boy, that’ll get ‘em. Both of our recievers will be open now! Forgive me Mr. Nutt. How in the world could I ever doubt such an ingeniues mind?
To Hawfan 100
What i was referring to as to why Coach T would not want to come here is the situation that presents itself next year. McFadden, Jones, Monk and Hillis gone (although that scenario might change thanks to the last two weeks). In case you haven’t noticed the cupboard will be bare next year. This was not a rap on the Hogs or its program, but a reality check. That’s why Tuberville would need a long term contract to get him here, As it looks now, it’s going to take a serious rebuilding of the program just to get us out of the SEC cellar. I don’t know if U of A has that kind money for Tuberville and still be able to buy out Nutt’s contract. The A & M thing might be a more realistic rumor regarding Coach T because of more money being available. The double dealing that Auburn did with him in trying to lure Petrino, I’m sure still sticks in T’s throat and mind. This dilutes any loyalty that he has toward Auburn.. Here’s a humorous thought. Just demote Nutt to offensive coordinator and treat him like Malzahn. Then T (or whomever is hired) could get an assistant coordinator or co-cordinator who would really be in charge of calling plays . Can coaches be demoted? sounds like a Supreme Court law suit to me. Better we should look for an Urban Meyer? A Note of caution. Nutt was also at Boise State with a good record. By the way, speaking of coaching musical chairs, has anyone heard any more about “Trading in the Carr” at Michgan? Maybe Nutt can do the same and turn things around. After all Nutt has (or did have) some Heisman candidates too..
To Nordictwin:
I too was praying for the Hogs to eat clock on that lasr drive, but the penalty in the Red Zone that put us back changed the situation. Considering that the Hogs had never gotten that far before, eating clock, was probaly not on their minds, but getting a TD was. Using up time is a mind set for those who are ahead or supremly confident.. Tuberbville did a masterful job of that at the end of their last drive, having full confidence in his kicker to make a FG that was like an extra point. No time left for the Hogs to respond
Defense played really well but obviously had nothing left in their tank for the last Auburn drive. Auburn does have an outstanding defense, as Florida found out. As to bringing in Mr. T. He is not that stupid to move here with the fan base lacking in football knowledge and those fans on his case earlier in his Auburn career. He knows how irrational our fans are. Mr. T. cannot change them. They will be who they are…negative and waiting to pounch on him. Ironically, some Auburn fans were trying to fire Mr. T even after his going undefeated the same season! Ole Miss fires a good head coach after he had a winning season and they are paying the price. There will be many D-1 head coaching opportunities after the season, but I certainly know it would be a vast mistake for Arkansas to lose a coach who has won 3 West titles during his tenure in spite of the fact that he was hamstrung in recruiting for many years because of the NCAA lingering investigation that HDN had nothing to do with. If the recruiting guru stars are right, HDN has done a tremendous job with what fans thought was inferior talent for lacking stars. That is changing apparently with the incoming recruiting class…that is if the fan base does not manage to screw this up. HDN is an outstanding coach and has done an outstanding job under the circumstances. Fans..WAKE up and remember. I suppose that is the world we live in…”What have you done for me during the last few months seems to be your cry”. The McDonald society all over again! Arkansas was within one lost fumble of having potentially played in the BCS Championship game last year. I certainly vote to keep our outstanding coach! However, it would be interesting to sit back and see some fan’s anguish with a lesser coach in the future. It is time for our fans to show class and support these coaches and young men who wanted to be at the UofA. They deserve our support. Stay, Houston. Stay! As one LSU fan told me, “What is wrong with your fans not supporting Nutt? Don’t they know that he is a great coach?” I said: “A few do not and are boisterous in their conduct.” Although I would hate to see him go, I would love to see him coach with the talent that an LSU has! Wouldn’t that be interesting to hear your comments after having faced his talent-ladden teams year after year! That would not be a pretty picture for the Arkansas fans. Go Hogs, Go! Beat Ole Miss! And that will likely be a tough one to win at their place.
While I’m not ready to call Coach Nutt great, I will say he’s done a very good job in a very difficult conference.
To borrow a phrase from an old President:
Are you better off than you were (fill in the blank here) years ago?
Houston Nutt 1998 – 2007 70-47-0 (0.598)
Danny Ford 1993 – 1997 26-30-1 (0.464)
Joe Kines 1992 – 1992 3-7-1 (0.300)
Jack Crowe 1990 – 1991 9-14-0 (0.391)
Ken Hatfield 1984 – 1989 55-17-1 (0.764)
1989 Southwest Conference Champions
1988 Southwest Conference Champions
(Fired after winning two back to back conference titles. That was a brilliant move wasn’t it? Look what it got us.)
Lou Holtz 1977 – 1983 60-21-2 (0.741)
1979 Southwest Conference Co-Champions
Razorhorn, I think you are on to something. And we left the Southwest Conference because? I like our chances so much better playing Oklahoma,Texas, and Texas A&M every year at least we would seem to have a chance. Ole Miss this weekend at Oxford right! I would rather be going to College Station, Austin, or Waco. Take a look at our conference record in SEC, three wins most years more if we are lucky.
While I would very much like to support HDN, as I feel he has generally overacheived with inferior talent, the text-gate and his infantile handling of Mitch and Gus cause me to feel that he needs to hit the road. Does anything think that John Pelphrey can handle both basketball and football? Hey, don’t laugh, my junior high coach did!
Razorhorn, think about this… Frank gets too involved and Holtz and Hatfield vanish… who wants to come here? Nobody… so, we get Crowe, Kines and Ford with lots of influence from Frank and they can’t do anything. So, we start again with Nutt and we do “better” but we still haven’t reached back to the Holtz and Hatfield exciting years. Face it, only once did Nutt get the excitement up and that was last year! Fairly pathetic wouldn’t you say?
No I wouldn’t say, especially compared to the excitement of the Holtz and Hatfield years.
The excitement of the Holtz years:
Lou Holtz 1977-1983 W:60 L:21 T:2
Conference Championships : 1 Co-championship and 0 Cotton Bowl appearances
Record vs. Texas 2 – 5
Bowl Record 3-2-1
1982 Bluebonnet Bowl v. Florida W 28-24
1981 Gator Bowl v. North Carolina L 27-31
1980 Hall Of Fame Bowl v. Tulane W 34-15
1979 Sugar Bowl v. Alabama L 9-24
1978 Fiesta Bowl v. UCLA T 10-10
1977 Orange Bowl v. Oklahoma W 31-6
The excitement of the Hatfield years:
Ken Hatfield 1984-1989 W:55 L:17 T:1
Conference Championships: 2 with 2 Cotton Bowl appearances
Record vs. Texas 2 -4
Bowl Record (1-5 and 0-3 against the SEC)
1989 Cotton Bowl v. Tennessee L 27-31
1988 Cotton Bowl v. UCLA L 3-17
1987 Liberty Bowl v. Georgia L 17-20
1986 Orange Bowl v. Oklahoma L 8-42
1985 Holiday Bowl v. Arizona State W 18-17
1984 Liberty Bowl v. Auburn L 15-21
Versus the Excitement of Houston Nutt
2 – 1 versus Texas
5 – 1 in overtime
Sorry. Can’t agree with you on that one.
Defense, If HDN went to LSU he would be out on his ego in less than 2 years. He would somehow [run] off his talented QB’s and that is fact. The reason we can’t keep a descent QB is because HDN got run off when he was a QB at ARK.His ego won’t allow us to have another good to great field general because he didn’t get that opportunity. As far as us having inferior talent, that is the biggest crock I think i’ve ever heard. We have three 1st round picks in our backfield right now [ Hillis,Jones and of course DMAC ].What other team in the nation can say that.In regards to our faithful and I mean faithful fans i.e 72,000 in attendance we are very knowledgable about this team an program. Our realistic fans know that it is time for a leadership change at headcoach. We just like HDN can go to our local library and get “The footbal coaching guide for idiots” but we don’t because we are smart enough and passionate enough to know that our very talented young men we have ARE NOT getting a sound gameplan from the GREAT”ha ha ah “HDN and David Lee.It is without a doubt it is totally HDN and Lee’s fault that our talented team is in disarray.72,000 loyal, passionate, and smart fans can’t be wrong. HDN MUST GO!!!!!!ENOUGH SAID ON THAT. OTHOG1, There is one reason we havn’t and won’t see the backup QB Emert. 1. HDN in his warped ego mind has to try and validate Mustain leaving the program, because he believes in that “great football genius mind of his”that Casey will have a breakout game and lead us to the promise land and make us all foget about MM. HDN just hasn’t figured out we are 2-5 in SEC play since Casey has taken back the helm.ENOUGH SAID!!! Lastly, I would just give Frank a round of applause for protecting his boy HDN and sticking to the program by giving Houston a pay raise and extension at the end of last year. Now the boosters have to shell out a bundle of money to buy out the extended contract of HDN,which makes it very difficult to pay new coach with top notch credentials a good salary. THANKS FRANK,YOU DID A WONDERFUL JOB OF PROTECTING YOUR BOY THROUGH 2012. THE PROGRAM TRULY APPRECIATES IT>WHAT A WAY TO BE REMBERED.Maybe we could convince Malzahn to come back home if Tuberville turns down the job.
one more comment on our backup Emert he is David Lee’s son-in-law.So I guess David Lee hasn’t taught Emert how to be A successful QB at ARK during family dinner.
Razorhorn, it appears that you suffer from long term memory. Houston (besides last year) generated very little sustained excitement. All of the worst years of Holtz and Hatfield has much more energy then Houston’s best year. How about comparing T25 rankings vs. wins against Texas for even OT records. Maybe if he was a better coach, there wouldn’t be some many OTs.
Ahh, finally, one arrives, Razorhorn, who has not lost memory and has very good analytical ability and not motoring on emotions after a few games did not go the Hogs’ way. I agree wholeheartedly with Razorhorn’s analysis for that is what I remember. Thanks for the memory jogs. As a matter of fact, I am sure that some of you still remember that less than one year ago HDN’s team played for the SEC championship and went toe to toe with Florida with their 4 and 5 stars. I also remember that many of you moaned about the low stars that HDN was bringing in while he was hampered by the NCAA stringing out an investigation that had nothing to do with HDN but had a lot to do with our old AD. Now, belatedly some of us are elevating the stars of HDN’s recruits and declaring that the stars meant nothing and that HDN recruited super talent. Amazing!
I went through those earlier years and know that if the AD had supported Hatfield the program would have risen to even higher ground…higher than had ever been done. I also remember that some of you cursed Hatfield on our own field in War Memorial Stadium for a mere loss in the closing minutes to a Longhorn team. Some appear to not even remember that prior to HDN the fans were begging for a coach who could beat SMU. That is how low the program had sunken. HDN has excelled and will excell even higher if left alone and if the fans will show loyalty rather than catch “fickelitis” after they have lost money betting on a game! Fortunately, most fans enthusiastically support him. I believe our new AD, not being intellectually challenged, will see the positives and also support HDN. Go, Hogs, Go! Beat Ole Miss!
There are other important factors to consider in the equation of football competitiveness: For instance, look at how geography plays a big role. By and large, if you look at the individual populations of each state, you will find that statistic almost always equates to universities in those states being able to be most dominant on the football field.
California leads the nation with – 36.4 million
Texas – 23.5 million
Florida – 18.0 million
Georgia 9.3 million
Tenn. – 6.0 million
Ala. – 4.6 million
SC – 4.3 million
LA – 4.2 million
KY – 4.2 million
OK – 3.5 million
Miss. – 2.9 million
Ark. – 2.8 million
Ironically, the bottom five states in population have never been know to field a competitive D-1 football team. They are: RI, Mont., Del, SD, AK, ND, VT.
Some univesities build a football reputation years ago and are still living upon that legacy. Nebraska is one of those, albeit, they continue to suffer a bunch of down years. Alabama is another one of those that built a football reputation years ago prior to Univ. of Arkansas building a strong program. In those years, Alabama, Ole Miss, LSU, and Big 10 teams, came into the state and took most of the cream of the meager crop of talent. Hawaii is another state that did not try to build a strong D-1 team until recent years (too far from any other major school) and they now recruit heavily on the West coast. Prior to that many of Hawaii’s best talent either went to the Pac 10 or to the Big 10. Bottom line, strength in football tends to build in those states with the big population numbers. California, with their big populations, still only tends to have a couple of strong teams. California, tending to be a glamour area in the eyes of some players, also sometimes reaches into other areas, by playing up the Hollywood angle. That hype sometimes appeals to a certain type of athlete.
I meant to mention Nebraska at 1.7 million.
Hey DWC – What’s the population of West Virginia? I’ll save you the time of looking it up – 1.8 million. They’ve managed somehow.
Love the stats though to back up your opinion. Keep ‘em coming.
You apparently are a “Johnny come lately with West Virginia”. Would you accept your team doing well during the last few years and only a few seasons during the university’s whole existence? From your past comments re: UofA, I think not! Some accomplished football university they are. Most did not even know they existed prior to their short run! I know what their track record was in the past because I lived in their neighborhood! So do not tell we how great they have been. And their record was accomplished in an inferior conference.
