Weekly Predictions - South Carolina

November 1, 2007 by TipsterHog

Congratulations to HogBloggerJr for the closest prediction last week of 56-10.  His quote: “We like to run so we will. [...] We’re boring, but hey it’s a victory.  Nutt sings to the 40 students still around at the end of the game.”

Yes…it’s true…there’s nothing in the official contest rules that says that “RazorBloggers employees and family members of employees are not eligible.  Void where prohibited.”  Hmmm…we may need to close that loophole.  Until then, HogBloggerJr will be receiving a spiffy white RBN t-shirt courtesy of Carpenter Clothing Co.  But…uh…wait a minute…do they still let you wear white t-shirts in the student section?

As for our mini-contest, Sunshine finally got back on the wagon and won last week.  Afterwards, he boasted confidently, “Take that…you bunch of slaps.”  (I still don’t know what that means.)  For the year, it’s HogBlogger with four points and HogBaller, TipsterHog and Sunshine with two apiece.

So here we go:

South Carolina GamecocksWalking on Sunshine: I don’t like the matchups at all…Spurrier vs. Herring and Nix vs. Lee.  Huge advantage to USC there.  But I have a feeling that some of the air is slowly leaking from the South Carolina balloon after back-to-back tough losses.  With the ESPN2 night game atmosphere, improved secondary play, and a little help from the fans…I think the Hogs find a way.  Arkansas 20, South Carolina 16.

HogBaller: This will be a pivotal game for both teams.  Spurrier brings arguably his best team since he’s been at USC to town.  The Hog defense steps up, but the ‘ole ball coach’ is ready for the Razorbacks’ one-dimensional offense.  South Carolina 24, Arkansas 17.

HogBlogger: The night game cool air and crowd atmosphere will play in the Hogs favor.  We can run on these guys.  If we can score and defend the passing game, they should be ours.  Go Hogs!  Arkansas 31, South Carolina 17.

TipsterHog: The ‘Head Ball Coach’ knows how to win in Fayetteville (2-0).  The ‘new season’ starts feeling a lot like the old one.  South Carolina 27, Arkansas 17.

Leave a comment with your name, e-mail address and pick.  And feel free to add your own take like “Insert Smelley ‘Cock joke here.” or “Out of the ashes…a Heisman campaign is reborn.  Hogs roll.”

Any chance Dick throws an early pick and Nutt sends in Emert? Probably.

Reversal of 2 years ago. Two pretty good defenses and two pretty mediocre offenses. I am a little disappointed that this one is on TV. I’ve only seen three games this year and they all had me standing on my roof with my wife down below saying “Honey its not that bad, please come down. Think about the kids. ”

After the Stoerner stumble my grandfather quit watching games from the start. We’d have to call him and tell him it was ok to watch. I thought “silly old man” but now I understand. I’m headed to Knoxville for the game next week and we need this one to make that one somewhat interesting.

I’m with you Carolina Hog. If the game is on TV, I can’t watch it. I get too worked up. I can only get periodic updates. But I will be at the game saturday night, so that’s not a problem. I think it will be a fairly low scoring game, and I’m going with the home team.

I’m still not convinced. If the defense is for real(finally!), as I thought they were at the start of the season, then we win going away. But, their going to have to prove it against a quality opponent, who beat Georgia at Georgia, and handled Kentucky, and almost beat a focused Vol’s team at home. I hope I’m wrong and the Vanderbilt game SC team shows up.

Well I see Carolina stop the run, in which we have to rely on Dick to throw the ball, and we all know that is a joke. I also see the secondary getting burned by Spurrior. They exposed us last year, and that was with a pretty good defense. I agree about the part about watching on T.V. my blood pressure rises sky high.

The seniors and juniors heading to the NFL go out of RRS on a winning note. They’ve been through a lot during their time as Razorbacks and they deserve to end it here with a win.

Hogs blow another one in the 4th qr. Gamecocks 23 - Hogs 17. Nutt’s mid-season revival take’s a big hit.

Gamecocks revise last year’s second half, paste Hogs with adept passing and little resistance from discouraged players and coaching staff. Previous Hog routes of no-names and pitiful Ole Miss not enough to overcome latent Hog doubts about themselves.

  13. darrell(Hog in LA) on November 1st, 2007 12:14 pm

I agree, it is hard to watch these games especially in the 4ht quarter. South Carolina has a very good defense and let’s be honest it is pretty easy to stop us, just load up the box make us pass the ball. Nutt can see the writing on the wall so he pulls out all of the plays and we get a moral victory.

    GO HOGS!

  15. HankHog on November 1st, 2007 12:55 pm

The best thing that happened for Spurrier and South Carolina this week is that Casey Dick has come back and will start the game. South Carolina comes with a vengence this week ready to put behind them the overtime loss to Tennessee. They were on a roll throwing the ball last week and that will continue this week and our Defensive backs will make them look like world beaters. Their secondary is excellant and with Casey they will also look very good with at least one pick.

    SC 35 ARK 16

If Emert had been starting at QB I might have had to pick the other way but HDN and Casey made this one easy for me.

Hogs put it on them in the 1st half, only to have Spurrier’s team put a scare into the hearts of the Hog faithful in the second. Go Hogs!!!!

Cocks defense is going to be too much for a beat up UA offense, which wasn’t effective against tougher competition before the injuries.

I think the kids have bought the new season speech from HDN and will come out fired up for this game. I expect DMAC to have a big game and the HOGS to win big especially with this being my first time in the stadium there.Hogs34-14

HOGS 31 USC 24 Nutt won’t hesitate to pull Dick if he struggles.

  20. HogBloggerJr on November 1st, 2007 6:39 pm

As the defending champion I feel as if my score prediction should not be just passed by as you scroll down the page but instead should be looked at as a view to the future. That being said I think this game comes down to coaching. Despite the fact that Spurrier has no QB, he is still an Einstein to Herrings Forest Gump-ness and will prove so consistently Saturday. McFadden and Jones will do their thing, but USC-east understands they can give up all they want from the 10 to the 10. We rush for a lot of yards, Pass for less and go down in flames

  23. Walking on Sunshine on November 1st, 2007 8:59 pm

Rumors on the hill are running rampant about the Hogs spending extra practice time this week working on trick plays. You know the “special plays” seen last year have been noticeably absent from the play calling list this year.

Anyway, insiders are telling us that the main trick play they are workin on involves Casey Dick taking five short step backwards after getting the snap, while Marcus Monk runs very fast straight down the field. Dick then propells the ball across the line of scrimmage to Monk, an apparent eligble receiver, some 30-40 yards down the field.

I would venture a guess that the element of surprise will certainly be with us if this type of trick play is introduced Saturday.

Hogs fly for lots of yards but then try and put air in the ball. Dick pops out of the center on the attempt and fumbles two balls trying to get a pass off. USC can pass and doesn’t look confused doing it. Seems Spurrier is capable of coaching a QB of equal talent or less and making the ball move forward. The USC team seems capable of believing the ball can go in the air and its not a basketball. Rocket Surgeon (yes Surgeon, he is no scientist) Nutt goes to the ground again and surprised USC knows it. Emert comes in and does a good job. But is it in time and enough, history says Spurrier can sell NUTT on ebay because he owns him. Nutt can’t put the team in position to win with his mindset. He hopes for a miracle of mistakes from the other team to make him look bright. Sorry, that lightbulb just doesn’t work.

Is DMAC healthy? I know what the press says but he’s been playing so much I’m not sure when his ribs have had a chance to heal. I question why he’s been in some of these games. Mike Hart’s campaing has been better served by sitting out than playing hurt. He should have never stepped on the field last week. I hope he is healthy. I would like one last chance to see him healthy.

Hooten uses the “quick trigger” on CDick after the first 3 and out. Emert gives us the best his “Missouri Southern” style QB skills has to offer, but no dice.

This becomes the pattern for HDN in the future. About half way through the season, jerk the QB and finish the season out “in style”.
