It is a great new day in Arkansas Football.

It is amazing to me how far these recievers have come in just a month. Casey looks solid. Mike Smith is going to have a great year.

    Defense?

I had a good time at the game with my sons yesterday. My oldest son Tyler kept saying “this is so cool”, “this is so cool”. He was refering to all the passing the hogs were doing, and it seemed like they were almost always unpredictable with their play-calling. I thought Casey looked sharp most of the time, and D.J. Williams look’s like he’s going to be a force this year. Crawford is only a couple od dropped passes away from being that go-to guy Petrino keep’s talking about, but until he clears that up, it look’s like Williams is the guy to me. Marques Wade lived up to all the hype he’s been getting, but I also thought Rod Coleman looked pretty impressive today as well. I didn’t know he was that fast. He almost mirrored Crawford with his speed on the reverse play. Along with Crawford dropping a few balls today, I noticed that fumbling bug that keep’s following around Brandon Barnett. If these two guys can clear up that little matter, I think we may be a dangerous offense next year. We still have DeAnthoney Curtis coming in in the fall at RB, and he’s supposed to be as good a pass-catcher out of the backfield as he is a runner. If he picks up on this offense as a blocker, and can hang on to the ball, he’s capable of taking Barnett’s spot. He’s also the same size and faster. I like Micheal Smith to hold on to his starting position. I wish he was a little bigger and stronger, but you have to love his 4.3 speed. I hope Petrino call’s plays this season to get him into space. He’ll be dangerous. I noticed Bret Harris on defense was breaking up a lot of passes. That was good to see, and I thought our ends were consistant at the pass-rush. Overall, it was a good day. Seeing the crowd exceed over 40,000 on a nice Spring day made the setting perfect. GO HOGS GO!!!!!

Sure wish I could’ve been there (is anyone going to broadcast the scrimmage?). Over 40k fans! Eat your heart out Ol’ Miss!

I like what I’m hearing out of the offense, especially the unpredictibility. We need some more consistency from a couple of skill players but that sounds about it. Does anyone see freshmen contributing besides Curtis. What about Adams?

How about the defense? The numbers sounded good for the Red team but this was hardly an SEC caliber offense they lined up against. Any youngsters look to see playing time on this side of the ball?

First game I’ve been to since the opening of the Nutt era almost ten years ago.

Pretty impressed with CD overall; he made several bad throws and a couple of bad decisions, but he looks like the man and I’m confident in his ability to QB us this year. He looks a lot more comfortable in Petrino’s offense (I hear it’s the same offense he had in high school, is that correct?). He even scrambled several times and picked up yardage; haven’t seen that since Matt Jones left.

DJ Williams is going to be a great tight end. He was catching balls all over the field. We’ve got several more tight ends that played well also; TE is probably our strongest position this year.

London Crawford made several good catches, including a spectacular one-handed grab in the corner of the end zone (on a great throw from Dick). None of the other WRs were impressive.

Michael Smith is very quick. He’s neither the speediest nor the most powerful back, but he can make guys miss and he’s very dangerous on the corner. Barnett looks fairly good but he fumbled several times, which is unacceptable.

Nathan Dick and Mortenson both played pretty well but are clearly not in Casey’s league yet.

One name we may hear a lot more of on the defensive side of the ball is Ramon Broadway (played for White). The guy had 14 tackles and broke up three passes; at times it seemed like he was in on every play. Other than him, there’s not much to say about the D — it wasn’t bad, but wasn’t particularly impressive either.

One WR inparticular I forgot to mention was Carlton Salters. He actually led all recievers with over a 100 yards. I think he had 7 catches. This offense is only going to get better by the fall. I think Adams will be hard to keep off the field in the fall. He’s one of the top 20 recievers out of highschool, and is rated in the top 10 at CB. I think he, Curtis, and WR Jerious Wright will contribute this year as Fresh. There could be several more step up as well, but it’s really hard to tell. This class has some talent. They could be even better than exspected with the coaches we have now.

Way too soon to know which way this team goes. Way too many question marks. Clearly, the Petino era will be great fun with another couple of good recruiting years. And, this bunch is not without talent and a bit of a monkey to show that they are not just the leftovers of the McFadden era. They lack some depth on defense. Not a good sign. Leadership will be the key, as always, with any given class. Who are they? What do they want and expect?

There is no question Petrino and company will put a product on the field and should surprise a few people. But, I guess what I like best is what I have craved for a few years, real balance. Power running with a versatile passing game is a tough, tough combination. And, that revolves to a degree around the tight end, something that we have in abundance.

Is it too soon to start the 90 day countdown?
