Crystal Ball ‘08: Division Races
July 22, 2008 by TipsterHog
We continue our series of predictions for the 2008 football season today with a look at how we think the SEC division races will play out.
| SEC West | TipsterHog | HogBlogger | Sunshine | HogBaller |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. | Auburn | Auburn | Auburn | Alabama |
| 2. | Alabama | LSU | Alabama | Arkansas |
| 3. | LSU | Alabama | Arkansas | Auburn |
| 4. | Arkansas | Arkansas | LSU | LSU |
| 5. | Mississippi | Mississippi | Ole Miss | Ole Miss |
| 6. | Mississippi State | Mississippi State | Mississippi State | Mississippi State |
| SEC East | TipsterHog | HogBlogger | Sunshine | HogBaller |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. | Georgia | Florida | Florida | Florida |
| 2. | Florida | Georgia | Georgia | Georgia |
| 3. | Tennessee | Tennessee | South Carolina | Kentucky |
| 4. | South Carolina | South Carolina | Tennessee | South Carolina |
| 5. | Kentucky | Kentucky | Kentucky | Tennessee |
| 6. | Vanderbilt | Vanderbilt | Vanderbilt | Vanderbilt |
A few notes:
- I just couldn’t let us all pick Florida over Georgia. Those two teams are too close…so I changed my pick to Georgia. The very difficult schedule of the Bulldogs may end up determining who wins the division. Either way, the SEC East will certainly be where the spotlight shines this year.
- If you look at Auburn’s schedule, it’s hard not to pick them to win the West. The Tigers could easily run the table on the road against Mississippi State, Mississippi and Vanderbilt. Their final conference road game against Alabama, however, might not be as easy this year as it has been.
- Ah…Mississippi State and Vanderbilt…who would we pick to finish last every year without you? Yes…someone gets “Croomed” every year…and this year it might even be Arkansas. But we’re still picking them to finish last. Prove us wrong again, Sly.
Coming up next: Who will be the breakout player of the year for the Hogs?

I’m afraid that HogBaller used the less than scientific “alphabetical order” method for his picks. But still a good read!
I agree with the fact that the Hogs will finish no farther down than 4th in the west, but could finish at 3rd, because we have a pretty good idea how many the Hogs are capable of winning, but we don’t know exactly how many our competiters will lose. That will always be the loop-hole in a division race. I think ‘Bama will be strong, but will probably lose a couple that they shouldn’t. LSU could also be the one to drop a couple they shouldn’t. Combine that with the Hogs winning a couple thier not supposed to, (ala ,Bama-LSU) and you have a possible 2nd place finish, behind Auburn. Of course if the Tigers don’t produce as exspected, all this talk is for nothing, and we really don’t know what were talking about after all. In any senario though, the fact still remains it’s going to be an interesting and exciting year for Hog fans. GO HOGS!!!!!
AR, LSU, Au, AL, Ole Miss, Miss St.
Ga, Fla, SCar, TN, Ky, Vandy
The wild, wild west will be wilder than ever. 3 losses may win it. It could be a blood bath. Alabama’s tradition and senior QB cannot overcome that schedule. LSU’s experience and talent will show. Although, it may be a 4 way tie for second or third. Arkansas benefits from a decent conference schedule and being picked last.
Florida/Georgia is pick’em. Tenn continues to slide.
It will be the year of the upset and the year of he survivor in the SEC. The waters part for the hogs.
Auburn is going to be tough on the plains. Otherwise, I think the Hogs have a legitimate chance - all the way down the line. The Alabama game will be huge.
While [arrogant] Horn fans will hate to admit it, the UT game is important on UA’s schedule, though far less so than ANY conference game. The UT game is also winnable, with the right “bounce” in Austin.
BOTTOM LINE: Auburn wins the west, Arkansas surprises most of the “experts” [except HogBaller] and shows up at number 2, LSU and Alabaam tie for the number 3 spot. GO HOGS!
