I’ve been listening to some of the radio sports shows in the evening, and I’ve been hearing some talk of how it’s a bad thing if the Texas game is put on hold for a couple of weeks. The reasoning is that the Hogs basically waste a week preparing for a team they won’t even play on Saturday. There’s only half truth in that theory though. Sure, the game plan for the Horns goes down the tube, but isn’t Special teams, and our defense not creating any turnovers, along with basic fundamentals (like dropping passes) our biggest concerns right now? If you were to change all 3 of those areas around right now, were a different football team, all together. Not one of those areas has anything to do with any game plan. This help’s us better prepare (fundamentally) for ‘Bama. The pressure is off our Freshmen to go on the road, into a hostile invironment, and give’s them much needed extra reps in practice, and also give’s guys like Forte, Davis, and Powers, time to get healthy. Lord knows were super-thin and inexsperienced at LB. I don’t see this throwing us out of rythem that much, and help’s us a heck of a lot more than it hurt’s us. GO HOGS!!!!!
There’s one more thing that work’s out well for the Hogs this week. We can start preparing for ‘Bama today. ‘Bama has to concentrate on Western Kentucky this week. They won’t be able to practice for the Hogs, probably, until Monday. Even if we took one day off on the weakend, we still gain an edge of 3 extra practice days over ‘Bama. Plus, they still have to travel.
Although I feel for the folks that are in the path of Ike, this is a great thing for the Hogs. My concern coming out of the Texas game is that we would be beat up, injury potential, and low morale going into SEC play - assumng we get drilled by Texas. I think we get an extra week to prep for Bama, keep our players healthy, iron out not-so-special teams, and we can be ready to slaughter Bama. That builds our confidence going into Austin on the 27th. We beat Bama, have a good showing in Texas and that increases the likelihood that ‘anything can happen’ when we hit the Gators and Auburn.
I agree that there is nothing bad about more practice and less games. I agree with Gonzo that this team isn’t good enough to game plan for anyone. We have too many fundamental problems to solve. I also agree with Hogfan in Tx that beating Alabama is a possibility while getting a whipping from Tx. is damn near certain. I don’t even give a crap about Texas. If they go up on us by 3 Tds, we should put in the 3rd team and let them have it. We’re no where close to national title contention so all that matters is the SEC. Its strange to feel this way about Texas but thats where I’m at.
This is a win win for us another week to rest and get healthy and workout those kinks in the defense. It is stil a hell of stretch Alabama,Texas,Florida, and Auburn Unfoturnately there is a Austin Music Festival that weekend of 9/27/08 so hotels are booked.
Hopefully, this will give us a better chance to work out a few kinks, before we play the Horns in Austin. Recruiting is so important for us in Texas. This postponment could be a blessing in disguise. The better showing we have down in Austin, the more attention we could recieve from major recruits in that area. This game will probably still be televised nationally by ABC, so there’s a good chance we’ll benefit from all prospects were recruiting in several states.
Well, I got my wish tonight. I fully exspected the USC Trojans to put it on the Ohio St. Buckeyes tonight, and boy did they. How many years in a row now have the pollsters over-rated these guys? There are several programs every year as good or better than the Buckeyes, but every year the pollsters seam to wish the Buckeyes into the national spotlight, simply becausae of thier tradition. Every year they make the top 5, squeeze out a good record against an inferior conference, and right back into the NC they go. I wonder how much closer the game with SC would have been if the opponent was Florida, Georgia, or LSU? What about Oklahoma, Missouri or Texas? How about BYU? Look at the Big 10’s very own conference with Penn St., for cryin out loud! These guys are murderin people! I hope that stinkin (Ohio St.)program loses 4 or 5 more this year! I’m sick of those guys!
One more thing to touch base with. Did anyone see who the favorite taget of Mark Sanchez was tonight? That’s right, Damian Williams. Doesn’t that just make you sick to your stomach? What do you think Petrino would be doing with Damian right now? Man, those sour grapes sure are hard to digest!
I also enjoyed watching “THE Overrated State University” get embarrassed yet again in a big nationally televised game. I really had fun watching Damian Williams do his thing. I just wish they’d stop referring to him as “The Transfer from Arkansas’ every time they mention his name. I mean how will they refer to Mitch if he ever gets to play? As “The Other Transfer from Arkansas”? ;^)
Question: Should Georgia slip yet again in the polls after their less than impressive performance against South Carolina? I think so, especially after OU’s continuing dominance over anyone they play. And enough about Knowshon Moreno already. He is not Heisman material. ‘No Show’ couldn’t even rack up a 100 yards against South Carolina. Look at McKnight for USC: he had 100 against the #5 ranked team’s defense by midway through the third quarter and he had to split most of the carries for the Trojans with the other backs.
You make a good point Hawgfan. Two actually. Oklahoma’s offense has shown to be a little more exsposive than Georgia’s, while the Bulldog’s just seem to keep shooting themselves in the foot with crucial penalties. I would say South Carolina’s defense is a little saltier than Washington’s, but I would still give the Sooners the nod as the better team. As far as contenders for the Hiesman would go, Niether Moreno or Stafford have put up what you would call impressive numbers just yet. Personally, I would be looking real hard at Mark Sanchez right now for the Hiesman. He should be ahead of Tebow at this point, and Sam Bradford, of the Sooners, should be included in that race to. By the way, who in the heck is this Hall kid at BYU? 7 TD throws against UCLA, in a 59 - 0 wipeout? Are you kidding me? They might want to seriously start bringing this kid’s name up a little more, especially if he turns in another performance like that one again. Wow!
Here’s somthing interesting I looked up on BYU’s QB, Max Hall. His grandfather is Wilfred “the Wizzer” White, and his uncle is Danny White, former Dallas Cowboys QB.
