Sloppy/ugly, is the only way to describe this win.

Did anyone else think Fortson's attitude needed a slight adjustment throughout the game? Maybe he was just frustrated.

This could turn out to be a good thing before the Texas game on Tuesday.

I hope they can all take a deep breath now, and get refocused in practice for the next couple of days.

  2. BlindHog says:

It's a long season and it hasn't even begun yet. If Fortson's head wasn't huge after the pub he got last week he wouldn't be human. ditto all of the hogs sans Monk. We ain't seen nothin' yet.

One tiny, tiny, complaint. And, this goes back to last year. Pelphry wears the striped shirt with the red stripe and the kentucky blue. Ditch the shirt. We are red and white, no blue.

  3. GonzoHog says:

    Blind,

I guess I never really paid much attention to what colors were on Pelphrey's shirt, but if it is as you say, then I would tend agree.

I wonder what's up with that?

For us out-of-staters, can someone give us a quick synopsis of the game today? What was our problem in the first half? Poor D? Were we turning the ball over? From following the game online, it looked like only M. Washington showed up for the first half…

  5. OwassoHog says:

We played out of control and took too many bad shoots. As for the suit, I don't think John knows how to look snazzy. He just looks out of place in ANY suit that I've seen him wear.

  6. Buaman22 says:

I think Fortson was hurting/sick/dead tired or some combination of them.

I think Washington and Fortson are both under the weather b/c we've seen both of them play serious minutes and still have energy, today, they were both dragging ass for most of the 2nd half.

If Pelphery thought it was Fortson's attitude, he would've torn him a new one, but he didn't, which makes me think that Pel knew something we didn't.

  7. Dieing Hog says:

I actually thought they played pretty good. I just thought that North Texas was just on fire from 3 point land and that kept them in the game. I will agree with the Fortson assessment like on that turnover he just watched them drive it back the other way and he walked up the court.

  8. reasonrules says:

I love our point guard but he should shoot a little less and involve the other two guards by driving in and dishing out.

We will find out how good everyone else is when Texas does their level best to minimize Washington by getting him in foul trouble and presses Fortson the entire game. Need Clark and Welsh to step it up and Monk to continue to contribute.

Was way impressed by Washington's free throw shooting today.

I love it the way the refs are a little intimidated by John just like they were Nolan.

  9. GonzoHog says:

I with you reason. I love our PG, but as exspected, he'll have some growing pains along the way.

As BlindHog mentioned in an earlier post, if his head didn't swell just a little after the OU beat down, he wouldn't be human.

I think that's probably what had me scratching my head, watching Fortson continually try to force the ball inside and put up ill-advised shots.

The more I think about it, the more I wonder if Pelphrey didn't just let Courtney just see it for himself.

Maybe it was just me, but I got the sense (mainly from CF) that after handling OU the way they did, maybe they lost a little respect for a team named North Texas.

Texas WILL be ready. We made sure of that last Tuesday, and as stated by Pelphrey in his post-game report, they are an exsperienced road team.

I hope this isn't the game we get exsposed, so I'm keeping my fingures crossed that won't happen.

This game is a better measuring stick than the OU game was.

As big as that game was, this one is bigger because we won.

Keeping the team level headed will be Pelphrey's biggest challenge right now, and for some reason, I think that started with this sub-par showing against N. Texas.

  10. I think the sloppy play was a direct result of Coach Pel putting them through back-to-back two-a-day practices on Thursday and Friday. Tired legs yields sloppy play and less than spectacular outside shooting.

I think he'll let them get their legs back before Tuesday night. They should be "up" again to face the 'Horns.

It was such a joy to be in Little Rock yesterday to watch the hogs. I agree with most of what has been posted. I would like to add my observations to yesterdays game.

    1. Fortson was tired. At the end of the first half he was totally wasted. I was sitting 9 rows from the court and he was breathing very very hard.

    2. Coach allows for bad shots without pulling a person when it happens. I like that.

    3. Call me stupid but the new hog band director has brought life back to even the band. It looked like the old Romkin days under Nolan. If you didn't notice watch him. He was throwing shirts into the crowd and running around getting folks to yell. We didn't have this under Heath,

    4. Arkansas fans just need something to cheer about. It's like the movie "Field of Dreams," "If you build it they will come"

  12. soupd says:

I was at the game as well….in pre-game warmups, fortson and washington were sitting on the bench watching, and Fortson was sunken in his chair. My view of his play was that he was either tired or sick. When you play sick you get frustrated quickly and press; it seemed to me he forced the penetration too much, but hey, that's a large part of our game – clear out and have Courtney penetrate and draw fouls and have others crash the boards. I've been amazed with the kind of shots he makes, it's what Gary Ervin and Kareem Reid lacked – Courtney makes most of them or at leasts gets the ball to the rim, the others missed most of the shots or turned the ball over.
