Another interesting tidbit about Montgomery / Ferguson is that the 1970 season opened against Stanford in Little Rock. The Stanford quarterback was Jim Plunkett and he led Stanford to a 28-0 lead that, along with a bad start by Montgomery caused the Boobirds to sing their chorus. Broyles put Ferguson in and he led Arkansas to a touchdown, but it was Montgomery would brought the Hogs within four yards of a miraculous comeback. The final score was 34-28.

The last time the Hogs had two quality quarterbacks on the same team was 1970. The quarterbacks were Bill Montgomery, the senior starter, and Joe Ferguson, the sophomore future Pro Bowler.

I love our situation with the QBs. The fact that Petrino has named Mallett the starter, while also assuring Wilson he'll get quality playing time as well, is a good thing.
Mallett still has a better grasp of the overall offensive scheem, but lacks some consistansy with touch on some of the shorter pass routes.
Wilson has great touch on all of his throws, but still needs work on understanding the overall offense, and continuing to get better playing under center.
All of their inconsistansies are correctable in time. They just have to stick with it.
The competition leading into the summer workouts should fuel both of these kids into busting their butts off for the next 3 months.
I'm excited about the fact that we have two outstanding talents at the QB position.
When was the last time we had that problem?
Petrino is an ace at developing top notch QB talent. These two couldn't be playing for a better HC.

Based on the article, this doesn't give us much information...sounds like it's still wide open - or it's not and Petrino wants the Wilson or Youngblood to push Mallett harder.

On another topic, how about Mitch Mustain? Just like I predicted, a great high school QB, but a 2nd or 3rd string at a major school. USC was the worst place for him to go. Should have gone to an ACC or Big East school.

I have to wonder if Carroll doesn't give him the opportunities due to attitude....or maybe momma is calling meetings with Carroll and the coaching staff...lol

This is not a surprise, but Mallett has some work to convince people that he can put touch on a throw. He definitely has the body and the arm to be an NFL guy, but he needs to work on the completion percentage.
