Game Predictions — Alabama

Congratulations to NielsBoar for the closest prediction last week of 45-42.  His quote: “Think ’89 Houston game, except this time we are Houston.”

Ugh…a spot-on prediction, Niels.  Like many Hog fans, we thought of that famous shootout more than once last Saturday night.  It’s been 20 years, but we bet Quinn Grovey was down on the sidelines having déjà vu all over again.

Niels should be receiving an RBN t-shirt soon that we’ve been told goes well underneath any formal attire.  You know…nothing but the best for our weekly winner!

If you need a quick refresher on how we judge the winner of our little weekly contest, you can check the rules here.  So here we go:

Alabama Crimson TideWalking on Sunshine: As much as Mallett and the Hogs’ wide receivers try to keep up, the Tide is successful in playing ‘keep away.’  Hog running game could have a hard time with Cody and crew.  Alabama 38, Arkansas 20.

HogBaller: The Razorback defense shows improvement, but still has flashbacks to last week.  The ‘Bama defense gets pressure on Mallett, but the Hogs are ready for it…causing Saban to have more than a few Maalox moments.  Do the upstart Hogs have what it takes to win a tough one on the road against the #3 team in the nation?  I’m going against my season pick and say — YES.  Arkansas 38, Alabama 35.

HogBlogger: The Hogs see a real defense for the first time this year.  Alabama 38, Arkansas 24.

TipsterHog: In sloppy conditions, the Tide have too many running backs…and the Hogs have too little defense.  A bad combination for Razorback fans.  Alabama 31, Arkansas 21.

Leave a comment with your name, e-mail address and pick.  And feel free to add your own take like “Hogs climb over ‘Mount Cody‘…because he is there” or “Tide crashes.  Hogs roll.”

Comments

  1. Carolina Hog says:

Hogs 30-28. I think we run better than expected. I don't think Bama can possibly take us serious after last year. Above all else I just have to believe in the Hogs. Its more important than winning this contest.

I assume that Bama plays on grass. yes?

  2. OwassoHog says:

Another shoot-out… Bama 48 to Hogs 45. Defensive continues to improve but gets LITTLE credit. :-(

    • opionatedblowhard says:

If we give up 48 points to Bama, he isn't improving.

      • OwassoHog says:

Really? You might have blown a gasket on your thinking about this! Since when is 48 points to a better team is NOT an improvement vs. 52 for the weaker team???

  3. Hogerson says:

Out of the frying pan with Green and into the fire with Jones. Looking forward to when we can play against a team that doesn't have an all-american type WR. Will be an interesting game as we go strength versus strength (Hogs O. vs Tide D.) However, I'm afraid their offense will be too much for our D once again.

    Bama 45

    Hogs 35

  4. Adam says:

Ya, umm… we lost to Georgia. Alabama > Georgia

    'Bama 44

    Hogs 31

  5. 10KHog says:

    Hogs – 45

    Bama – 42

    Now Bama's Houston.

  6. Boyer in the Distric says:

From what I've seen thus far, I'm actually MORE impressed with Georgia than I am with Alabama.

    Still:

    Bama 45, Hogs 38

    • Boyer in the Distric says:

One more thing…most Bama fans that I've talked to up here are actually legitimately nervous about this game. That has to be worth something, right?

Or maybe I need to quit being so damn optimistic.

  7. I Like Pigs says:

    U of A (Fayetteville) – 24

    ua (Tuscaloosa) – 34

Our running game and defense improves, but not enough

  8. Stanzbury says:

Bama gets rattled early and often- Hogs 45 Bama 30-

    Yes I do drugs

  9. MexiHog says:

The defense does a better job of not allowing the big plays, but Bama still moves the ball well. The offense does another great job and take the lead near the end of the game. Just like the 07 game, Alabama will need to drive down the field in the closing minutes, but this time the D will step it up and give the offense some much deserved stops.

    Arkansas 34

    Alabama 28

  10. GolfHog says:

In what appears to be a moral victory for 'Bama, Hogs escape with the win.

    Arkansas 28-24

  11. john says:

No offense in the red zone is problematic. Defense doesn't improve and we trade field goals for TDs again. Bama 31, Hogs 19

  12. Ward_Hog says:

It's time to get over last week's loss and get on to Bama!!! A brief recap of last year's game… The final score, 49-14. We threw 2 TDs, just to the wrong team. 14 mius 49 is 35. Coffee and company ran all over us. We'll still give up a long one, but regardless of last week, our D is better. Take away Upchurch's 4th quarter TD run of 62, 35 minus 7 is 28. Now, Mallet is the real deal at QB. Add 2 TDs and minus the 2 pick 6s, final score 31-28 HOGS!!! That means Tejada will win it with a FG. Wooooo Pig Sooooie!!!

  13. NielsBoar says:

    Bama 38-31.

People will remember why Smith and Williams got so much hype leading up to the season, as Hogs offense is much more ball control oriented in this game. Defense shows improvement. Wingo plays a minor role this week and shows some flashes of greatness. Special teams and turnovers cost us this game.

  14. BACON BITS says:

The kool aid is still sweet and swine flu causes hallucinations. Defense plays over their heads and Mallet has the Kansas City Chiefs, Carolina Panthers, St. Louis Rams salivating for his services. Enjoy him now folks b/c he won't be here next year.

    HOGS 34

    BAMA 28

  15. BACON BITS says:

    my bad mexi hog………….hogs 35 – bama 25

  16. T-towner says:

As long as we are searching for historical irony, how about:

    Arkansas 41

    Alabama 38

    ???????

  17. Reaganite says:

    Super Mallett & Co. 45

    Alabubba 42

Tiffin misses a last second field goal, to tie it up, causing the delusional tide faithful to throw him into the nearest Gumpster. Young Alabubba children will then fear their fathers are going to shoot them, as in 2006.

Razorbacks also come up with a foolproof plan to stop Mt. Cody. Load T-Shirt cannons with Krispy Kreme donuts and fire them off every time the ball is snapped. Mt. Cody will be powerless to overcome their allure.

::sniff, sniff:: Chocolate covered!!! Cody likey.

    Go Hogs!

  18. Bubba Hog says:

49- 41Hogs. It will be a shootout on Tuscaloser.

  19. Vegasdad818 says:

    35 – Hogs

    31 – Bama

Greg Childs is the man again in this game. Too big, too strong. Running game is alot better. Have better control of clock.

  20. gbmcnees says:

    Arkansas 45 Bama 42

  21. Razorfan14 says:

    Arkansas 28 Bama 49

  22. Carolina Hog says:

Pictures of the '07 game still bring a tear to my eye.

  23. blake says:

Hogs win this one on a miracle last drive. 38-35

Mallett becomes the new Tebow in the media and the Hogs get some LOVE!

  24. Waldron Hog says:

    Hogs 24

    Tide 41

Defense and kicking game doom hogs. Imagine that?

  25. Ldchil1 says:

    Hogs 41

    Bama 35

They still have our favorite kicker!!!

    Go Hogs!!!

  26. CoastalHog says:

Arkansas can't punch it over in the red-zone. We'll have to kick 3 field goals and we miss one of those! We give the Tide great field position because we can't buy a touchback. Defense improves. Alabama 35 Arkansas 34 …a close heart breaker. Thank God Clint Stoerner is not commenting on the sideline. See ya Saturday! Go Hogs!

  27. mike in magnolia says:

Mallet throughs a jump pass to smith out of the backfield on the 3 yard line. Just kidding making reference back to Blakes comment. I just don't no how this is going to played out. If it's a another shoot out we win if it's a ball control game then Bama wins. Can Mallet handle the hostile enviroment? Can Bama QB stay with Mallet like Cox did? Firends in Bama saytheir recievers are not as good as Goergia's. But my response is " Our D can make them look that good." So with all of that bloviating here goes.

    Hogs 32

    Bama 24

  28. Greg says:

Go Hogs, although I think we will falter in this one, after this, we only lose one more game, maybe 2 all year.

    Hogs – 37

    Bama – 48

  29. george says:

don't get your hopes up arkansas will be lucky to win 4 maybe 5 and that's pushing it.

  30. blake says:

George thats just a dumb comment.

  31. soupd says:

    we're gonna shock the world!!!

    Hogs 42

    Elephants 10

  32. Chitown Hog says:

Saban will control the clock with the running game and go deep to Julio Jones when needed. Our D will be hard pressed to stop either. Closer and lower scoring than last week, but not enough to beat this type of team on the road.

    Hogs 24

    Bama 28

    WPS

  33. GolfHog says:

I can't believe you are not going to have a comment opportunity after last night's classic Nutt meltdown.

The Quarterback Killer strikes again. To hire Houston with an All American QB in the stable is simply not doing your homework. It didn't take long for old Nutty to run to form.

The only remaining question: How will he manage to lose to Vandy?

    • uvahog says:

That was classic Nutt all the way. My first instinct is to say thank God we don't have to look like that anymore. But then I wonder if trading an anemic Nutt offense that has an SEC quality defense in for an powerful offense with no defense at all is just shuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic?

      • GolfHog says:

Nutt's defenses were pretty gimicky. He never had a real SEC defense either.

I think Bobby either has or will come to understand that all that recruiting moxie is going to have to be directed at a defense. Otherwise we are the Texas Tech of the SEC.

I don't know which will be more frustrating to watch, bad defense or bad offense. I think you have a better chance of winning a game with bad defense and a better chance of winning more games with a bad offense. I know Bobby's offense is fun to watch.

      • Soupdhog says:

I think Nutt proved this last night – if you have a weak offense you can't win games, even with a marginally strong defense.

Ole Miss kept SC in check most of the game with pretty good defense. Comparing this to the Hogs, even if they can get a couple stops they at least can stay in the game or have a chance to win cause the offense can put up points.

  34. uvahog says:

    Ala. 41

    Ark. 14

Unfortunately, Bama gets out that yella hamma and beats our pathetic defense to death with it…while our offense with no where to run the ball thanks to Cody & company is stymied in the face of a real secondary.

  35. HogNEdmond says:

Hogs show marginal improvement over last year's dismal performance. Still a long way to go to being competitive on the road against a traditional SEC power with a strong defense and solid running game.

    Tide 45

    Hogs 21

  36. HogBloggerJr says:

    PigMEN- 37

    Elephantmen-31

I refuse to not pick the hogs here. Willy's D has had a week to get the Georgia shock under control and I trust he will field a smarter/faster (please bench 39) defense against a much less offensively savvy 'Bama team. If Utah could do it, we can.

  37. opionatedblowhard says:

    Bama 35 Hogs 14.

Tide Rolls on to chance and National Championship.

    Hogs roll towards Shreveport.

Willy is rolled out of town.

  38. Arch Hog says:

    Alabama-38

    Arkansas minus defense-27

    No fun!

  39. Jay DubYa says:

    Hogs 37

    Tide 31

Come on Hogs right the ship and play sound football.

  40. EH in SF says:

    Alabama 41, Arkansas 24

Poor defense and kicking game in bad weather against a good Alabama secondary on the road makes for a long day for the Hogs.

  41. Petrino--The Quarter says:

Well now we know who the QB killer is and that title goes to our very own Bobby tPetrino is the QB killer. Mallett stunk it up. Kicking game stunk. No resemblance of a running game. We need to recruit some running backs that can run. We need a QB who can get the ball to receivers. We need a new offensive play caller. The plays stunk. Alabama played a good game.

  42. Petrino--The Quarter says:

I am so glad that we have a strong offense. Otherwise, we would have lost the game something like 35-7.

I see where George's comment was pooh poohed but now george is looking like a realist which most people are not. George's comment may unfortunately be on track. After the 35-7 bombing, 5 wins sounds good. I originally thought that this was a bowl team but now I have doubts. Lots of games left….so let us relax and let the coaches coach. At least the players get to get their college paid.
