Game Predictions — Ole Miss

October 22, 2009 at 7:05am by TipsterHog
Filed under Arkansas Razorbacks, Football

Congratulations to hoglar69 for the closest prediction last week of 24-17.  His quote: “A little reverse psychology!”  Unfortunately, hoglar, I think the Gators ran a double reverse on us.

hoglar69 will not be receiving an RBN t-shirt because he forgot to include a score for the referees in his prediction.  He has been suspended for two weeks and his eligibilty to make a bowl prediction is in jeopardy.  …PSYCH!

If anyone needs a quick refresher on how we judge the winner of our little weekly contest, you can check the rules here. So here we go:

Ole Miss RebelsWalking on Sunshine: Hogs pass rush against a shaky Ole Miss O-line makes this a ’special’ day in Oxford.  HDN’s team “lets go of the rope” in the fourth quarter.  Not even close.  Arkansas 30, Ole Miss 16.

HogBaller: Bobby Petrino is in his second year at Arkansas.  Houston Nutt is in his second year at Ole Miss.  Enough said.  Arkansas 55, Ole Miss 10.

HogBlogger: The Hogs now know they can be pretty good.  Time to start a string of W’s.  Arkansas 42, Ole Miss 17.

TipsterHog: Ed Orgeron may be wearing an orange shirt now (when he’s actually wearing a shirt), but his old recruits in Oxford are still wearing red, white and blue on defense.  As for the Rebel offense…meh…high school.  Arkansas 20, Ole Miss 14.

Leave a comment with your name, e-mail address and pick.  And feel free to add your own take like “Nutt delays team entrance again to avoid boos…at home” or “Score evened.  Hogs roll.”

I’ll go Hogs 37-14 in hopes that these are not the hogs of old. I’m still learning how scarred I am from the past. I know in my bones when the let down happens and have come to believe it has to happen in spite of the fact that lots of good teams over come it every week. I think this is a big game for that reason. We need to show we can bring it every week and we need to start a string of wins. Go Hogs.

Should I be worried that we are getting 6 pts? Do the gamblers know something we don’t?

  2. OwassoHog says:

I’m guessing the Hogs show up with the killer instinct after Florida. If so, win big – Hogs 45-17. Best part of the win… NOT having to hear juvenile comments about that “fat” ref by RazorBloggers! (but a close second… listening to Houston stammer around about how they were defeated at home).

  3. Stanzbury says:

Hogs put up 60- 61 Ole Mis 2

  4. GolfHog says:

    It’s a nail biter. Hogs 34-10.

  5. BACON BITS says:

Hogs take out frustration on Rebels without causes and start our 7 game winning streak………..

  6. HJHog says:

My how the Razorbloggers change their predictions mid-season;) It is good to see that you guys are now bleeding HOG RED again with your predictions!!! This one is a no-brainer, no pun intended towards HDN:) Hogs show up with a well balanced attack on offense and a defense that is beaming with confidence. Mallet “surgically” picks Ole Miss apart and HDN “calls the plays, brotha”.

    PIGMEN 42
    Ole Miss 13

Houston has had enough time to completely destroy Snead’s confidence, disregard the line, and screw up the entire offense. Couple that with the fact the HOGS are motivated to prove something after last weeks shenanigans in Gainsville I believe we come out firing and with a purpose. T-minus 4 days till Houston finds himself back where he belongs, on the coaching Hot Seat.

  8. SeabeeHog says:

All touchdowns for the Hogs in this one. No confidence on the kicker.

    Go Hogs!!!

  9. T-towner says:

They used say, “Hotty toddy, gosh almighty…….” Now, they have a new chant, “Hootie Nutty, help us almighty…..” I hope this isn’t sacreligious.

  10. TheThird says:

I think we’re getting a little too confident in our ability to score. This is the same Ole Miss defense that held Alabama to around 20. I think the Hogs win the game, but I would be surprised (and thrilled) if we put up 40 this week.

  13. Chitown Hog says:

You just know Hootie is going to give it all he’s got – nail biting and all – to get a win over us. Ole Miss takes the early lead, but Hogs prevail late. I second SeabeeHog, no FG opportunities in this one. Let’s just hope Tejada gets the extra points through.

    Hogs – 28
    OM – 24

  14. jim dogg says:

Nutt may have one problem he didn’t anticipate. Thanks to the officiating in the Gators-Hogs game, the refs will be under a microscope for this game. Aside from the crowd, no “home cookin” will be available for the Rebs; common sense would dictate that, but who knows? Speaking of officiating, the SEC has suspended the WHOLE crew from that fiasco. This is serious stuff and the credibilty of the SEC is under a cloud of suspicion. After the SMU-Hogs game in 1982 (?) the official that made the erroneous pass interference call was fired from the SWC, and to my knowledge never refereed another college game again. He spent the following summer on the chicken pot pie circuit in Texas claiming HE was the victim. Did anyone else notice on Sheppard’s personal foul that the Gator lineman took a dive faster than Greg Louganis. I thought only QBs were taught that. Only at home, in front of an official, I guess. Insofar as predicting the score, as others have said, it depends on whether the Hogs have psychologically recovered. I’m sure Nutt will have his troops ready. I was at the A&M game and watched the Auburn and Florida games on TV. One thing that I felt was that the Hogs have received no respect from anyone. I really believe all three of the Hog’s last opponents were not mentally ready and they figured on a W. Ole’ Miss will not be in that same mode. My best bet:

    Arkansas 21
    Ole Miss 17

(Note: no field goals for Arkansas. Petrino may have learned his lesson about putting the game in the hands of Tejads rather than Mallet when the situation dictates such a decision.

  17. hoglar69 says:

Well – it’s actually hoglar69 (not 62), but hey, I know the check (I mean t-shirt) is in the mail! (Sorry – an officiating slip!)

Agreed these are the new Hogs and no let-down this weekend, or need for reverse pyschology! Hogs roll!

    GO HOGS GO!!!

hoglar69…well crap…I must have been in a stupor when I typed that wrong. Maybe I need to be suspended for two weeks! I’m on the road right now and away from my PC but I’ll correct later today.

      I guess I wasn’t lying when I said hoglar62 wasn’t getting a t-shirt!

  18. JHog says:

Good ole fashion defensive struggle with a couple of big plays thrown in.

  20. MexiHog says:

I think the score will be close, but the game will actually be easily won by the hogs. The Rebel D might be one of the best in the conference right now, but that’s only because because they haven’t really seen any potent offenses, or well any kind of real offense with a passing attack.

  25. mike in magnolia says:

Well I spent a couple of hours in prayer asking God to give me the score, then He told me He could care less and that I was on my own when it came to football. I figured I would ask for some Devine help this week since I haven’t been close all this year. Didn’t work……Oh well
    Hogs 28
    Nutt 13

We give up our normal big play on defense then hold Ol’ Miss to 2 field goals

  26. NielsBoar says:

I’ll play the contrarian, since no one else is picking Ole Miss… maybe this will increase my odds of winning a t-shirt

    Ole Miss 28 – 24

Just for the record, I think the Hogs win. During the half time interview, look for Nutt to say “They just score so fast… it messes you up.”

  27. HOGinAIKEN says:

    I’m going with:

    Hogs 44
    Ole Miss 12

A significant amount of “getting well” is due and the Hogs make a statement about their intention to win out the season.

Not a touchdown for the Rebels either. Only Field Goals.

  28. HungryHog says:

HDN1 Virus has hit Ole Miss High. Common sightings of 3rd and 8. Draw plays and biting fingernails. Fever will cause visions from the Ghost of Malazahn.

Hogs have a system in place. Better every week. Xs and Os. Hungry on Defense.

    Hogs 42
    Oxford High 10

  29. AZ Desert Hog says:

Two ways to look at this:

    1) Hogs are still blaming the refs for getting hosed last week (and who could blame them) and are not fully-focused on the upcoming game.

    2) Hogs are mad as he**, and we’re not going to take it anymore! (Didn’t Coach Willy say something to that effect a few weeks back? It seems to have worked pretty good so far!)

I’ll take option 2 here. I think there are just enough key players left over from the previous regime that will make playing Hootie and the boys the perfect metaphorical ibuprofin for last week’s hangover. The Rebs do have a pretty good defense, though, so I doubt there will be half-a-hundred hung on ‘em like some of you guys have been saying. Look for Snead to be spending a lot of the day on his back, or running for dear life!

    Hogs 28
    Ole Piss 17

  30. Soupdhog says:

I don’t think Ole Miss will score. Their offense is horrible and our defense just held 3 top ranked offenses to less than 25 points.

Don’t forget, Ole Miss has a good defense…but Petrino will figure it out, just like he did against FL.

    Hogs 34
    Ole Miss 0

  31. Jeremy says:

Houston we have a problem running up the middle. DD Jones and Malcolm Sheppard seem to stop it every time. However, he continue to try.

  32. razorblade says:

Hogs defense is for real! This week the turnovers are on the opponents side of the field.

    Hogs 27

  33. ua87 says:

This one’s simple. You have a program on the rise (Arkansas) against one of the biggest disappointments in college football this year (Ole Miss). You have a coach and staff who know the power behind a passing game (Arkansas) against a staff who’s gameplan was aptly described by Steve Spurrier as “predictable” (Ole Miss). You have a team hungry to take its frustration out on coming up just short of knocking off number 1 (Arkansas) against a program that has looked flat and void of a definitive game plan over the last several weeks (Ole Miss). I think Ole Miss is ripe for getting its a– handed to them.

    Arkansas 51

  34. hawgfan12 says:

Houston’s screen plays on 4th and 50 don’t work against our very improved defense…

    Hogs 30

  35. HogNEdmond says:

This sets up as the kind of game that Nutt was actually pretty good at winning when he was at Arkansas. Once the high expectations for a season were gone (or perhaps trampled by unimaginably bad performances), Nutt was pretty good at rebounding his teams and winning with the us-vs-the-world mentality he likes best. Ole Miss is not a top-five team but is solid with a decent front seven and QB. Look for Nutt to try to let the air out of the ball, hope to get to the fourth quarter with a chance to win, and take his shots from there.

So far, I’ve been backwards on the Georgia and Auburn games, so let’s hope the trend continues. I’ll say:

    • jim dogg says:

Excellent analysis. Fans here seem to forget the LSU game of two seasons ago (that I attended in Baton Rouge). Nutt can be dangerous and sometimes comes up with a smidgeon of cleverness to beat an opponent that is not ready. Fans here also seem to think that the Hogs will be sky high after the Gator game, something we will not know until well into the first quarter (Watch for the tackling intensity). Hopefully the fans here are right, but if not, your prediction could be correct. Mississippi is talented and will be at home. The best advantage that the ‘backs might have is Nutt’s usually predictable play calling. When he was with the Hogs it seemed that most SEC coaches, winning or losing, seemed to have his number. One play I saw in the recent SC-Rebs game, where it was 3 and 5 (something like that), Nutt went with McCluster instead of a short pass with Snead. SC stuffed it, and it looked like the defenders knew exactly what was coming. Based on the past, as one fan here noted, Nutt may not trust Snead and go with the ground game to keep it close until the 4th quarter. But a good passing team can beat you in the 4th quarter, especially with a two minute offense. However one never knows does one. Hopefully the Hogs are up for it, and the Petrino/Robinson game plans are as good as they were for Florida. Go Hogs.

I’m with Hog ‘n Iowa on this one. Same prediction of 34-17, Hogs.

After the highly intensified, nail-chewing 1st qr., the Hogs put it all together for the remainder of the game.
The Hogs only manage a 14-10 lead at halftime, but quite the crowd for good in the 3rd.
