It seems pointless to discuss this game or this team any more, until they get whatever players they’re going to have available in uniform.

  2. GonzoHog says:

It was said that Washington tweaked his back before the South Alabama game.
I wonder what his problem was before that?
Also, Welsh is doing nothing more than filling a void because of the depth issues we have at the guard positions.
He should never be allowed to handle the ball at the top of the key, ever!
He has a hard enough time shooting the ball, must less directing the offense.

The reasons we’re losing is because our Freshman seem to be the best talent on the floor, we have NO Sr. leadership, and we’re still without our best playmaker, Fortson.
I wish Pel would give at least a little bit of insight to the situation with C. Fortson. The fans should at least know if there’s a chance he’ll come back, and if so, when will he be allowed to start practicing with the team?

  3. Gonzo,

Fortson is practicing with the team. Some articles I read yesterday indicated that the end of the semester is likely the earliest that he will return, if he does.

  4. Pack Your Bags Hog says:

Fire Pelphry today. Period. Should have been done Sunday night. Last night’s embarrassment underscores the need to cut him loose.

I’m beginning to wonder what the team does during their practices. They can’t pass. They can’t rebound. They can’t move with the ball. They can’t move without the ball. They can’t make layups. They can’t shoot. They can’t play perimeter defense. They can’t play post defense. If the point of practice is to get better, I’m wondering what they actually practice because they are awful at all of the fundamentals of basketball.

It was obvious during the televised timeouts last night that the team is no longer listening to Pelphry. Heck, they weren’t even looking at him when he was “coaching” them.

    Fire Pelphry today.

It was nice of Capel to play it straight until the half. It looked for a few minutes like we knew how to play basketball. It’s kind of like Willy and the defense in football; how do you complain about coaching when we are playing what amounts to 6 high school players. We have no experience and no numbers. It is an impossible situation.

How did Dudley Do-Right create this mess? There has to be a LOT more to this story. How do you lose an entire recruiting class of six players and then turn around and do it again? Why keep playing Welsh? What’s really going on here? It’s like Tiger Woods; they would be better off telling the truth and moving forward than wasting all of this time and effort trying to make a really bad situation look anything close to normal. It just makes them look stupid. But, maybe that is the best alternative they’ve got.

  6. AZ Desert Hog says:

I’m not willing to give up on Pelphrey or this team just yet, but I’m real close. It’s just so tough to judge him on how the team performs when only half of them are avaliable to play, though. I agree that it should be made known what Fortson’s status exactly is. If he’s coming back at all, it needs to happen now, or else just cut him loose. Once we know who/what the team is for the remainder of the season, then lets see if there’s any progress. If not, Pel needs to get canned at the end of the season, no doubt about it, because what we’ve seen so far is pathetic. On the other hand, Arkansas basketball is such a mess these days, and it was made crystal clear when Pel was hired that nobody wants the job. Geez, we all know what happened with Altman, and he’s not even that great a coach! This is down-right depressing… has it really been that long since getting knocked out in the Sweet 16 was a disappointment? Wake me up next August when football starts again. Then again, there’s always baseball.

  7. U-Haul Hog says:

Let’s get serious here. We’ve got an all but empty arena begging for people to bring their dollars and behinds to the seats. If I owned the coke vending contract and my investment was based on receiving a percentage of cokes sold, I’d rent a full sized U-Haul truck and park it in front of Pelphry’s house TODAY! Empty seats don’t get thirsty.

  8. GolfHog says:

Pelphry knows he’s gone in March. Washington knows that there is not enough team left for him to play with. Welsh knows he can do whatever he wants. The rest of the team knows very little. Sooner or later we will find out what Long knows. He came out smelling like a rose with Petrino (he wanted one of the Tommys or the old dude from Wake.) Frank and White stunk this up. We’ll see if Long has the sense to fix it.

  9. OwassoHog says:

I don’t support the firing of John. Seems to me that his first year was just a holding pattern with 6 seniors. The second year (i.e. last) was certainly not as planned. Now we are a few games into a horrible start that began BEFORE game 1. With all of the junk that has happened since Nolan, unless we got a top 5 coach, what is the value in the move? Personally, I don’t see the change happening… I don’t see us getting the top 5 coach… the impact of getting rid of John right now is probably going to be a bigger negative than a positive. Just my opinion!

    • GolfHog says:

      I agree in principle.

He doesn’t act like a guy who is here to stay. He seems to be going through the motions. He has NO room left for error. One more incident, one more player lost and he has a huge hill to climb. If he can bring in a good recruiting class, turn Fortson around, and keep all of these kids in class he might finally see some light ahead.

But, what do you do about butts in the seats. That has alwasy been the bottom line. You make a change to get the fans to pay attention again, pure and simple. Get a fresh face and a new honeymoon period. Surely someone has talked to Mike Anderson by now.

      • OwassoHog says:

I realize that fan support will drop to some all time lows but we need to give John ALL of the possible support in making the changes needed. I’m thinking that this is like a forest fire. We have scorched earth right now but hopefully real soon we will see some new growth with some amazing results!

  10. GonzoHog says:

Firing Pel and finding a new head coach at the end of this season would be a waste of time and energy. We’re not going to really see where we’re at until Washington and Sanchez are completely healthy, and Fortson is allowed to play.
    M. Powell is a beast, but still makes a lot of Freshman mistakes. He’ll grow as a player throughout the season. The same goes for J. Nobles and J. Farmer.
After losing 4 of the 6 players signed last year, and only playing with 1 to this point, it’s like starting all over again for the 2nd season in a row.
Win or lose, if Pel can unite the team before the end of the season, that’s all that really matters at this point.
Next year, if Pel can bring in all the players that have oral commitments right now, and possibly add Ricardo Ratliff to the mix, this team could start to come together next season. If not, then it might be a good time for Jeff Long to start looking at other options.

    • Monster.com Hog says:

M.Powell a beast? Hardly. The honest truth is he’s average just like all of the other members of this team. They are average ball players who never would have made the practice teams for Eddie Sutton or Nolan Richardson. They don’t hustle, they don’t compete, and they’re selfish. What do they all have in common? Pelphry recruited them. Fire Pelphry today. Let Evans run the show at a ridiculously low basement salary, then open up the checkbook and hire a veteran winner. Otherwise, schedule Arkansas St., UCA Conway, and UofA Fort Smith and we might win one out of four.

  11. omahahog says:

    Powell is a freshman. He’s a beast.

  12. Swineherd says:

If Pelphrey can land the best prospects among those he’s now recruiting, the Hogs could rise to become a mediocre team in a few years.

  13. BLP says:

Firing Pel will not solve anything at this point. It will only make things worse. Like it or not fellow HOG fans, our once proud basketball program is at the bottom of the barrell. There is absolutely no excuse for our program to have sunk so low, but here we are none the less.

Remember how hard it was to even find a coach when Heath was fired. No decent coach wanted to touch the job even with a 10 foot pole. So we got a mediocre coach, from a mediocre school, with a mediocre win/loss record. What makes any of us think this coach can come to Arkansas and preform any better than he did South Alabama, when the job and the competition is even harder? Hopefully he can overachieve every now and then if he sticks around, but don’t expect a very ordinary goose to lay a golden egg.

Almost all the guys playing right now are Pel’s recruits. How many times have we seen a freshman from another team torch the HOGS over the years? “We’re still young” is a worn out excuse, especially when a coach is in his third year of recruiting. Part of that problem is the previous two recruiting classes were big duds because none of the are still with the program.

Hard times have hit the HOGS and I’m afraid it is here to stay for a while. We can all be optimistic, but it won’t change reality.

  14. GonzoHog says:

As bad as it looks right now, giving up on this team is a mistake.

  15. arkie49er says:

I hae always said I would rather have a losing team with integrity and standards than a winning team full of thugs and punks. It looks to me like Pelphrey is my coach. As for Fortson, we’ll know the story eventually. Those of you calling for Pel’s head, what exactly would you do in his shoes?
