Alabama‘s win over Texas gives the Tide a much deserved National Championship…the fourth in a row for the SEC. A more impressive performance in the Liberty Bowl might have pushed the Hogs into the Top 25. But like ESPN, where Arkansas is already pre-season ranked 16th, we’ll have to wait until next year to do that.

I take exception to the Texas being #2… they didn't show me anything that they deserved a rating this high based upon the last 2 games.
Any poll that puts Central Michigan at 21 illustrates that polls are PC or regionally biased. 21 after beating Troy in overtime, barely beating a very mediocre Michigan State team, and winning the MAC, the conference with worst bowl record (?). Insofar as Texas is concerned, Owasso, the 'Horns lost their best player, leader, and the one who should have won the Heisman if not Gearhart, and they still made a game of it. I was not impressed with Alabama in Pasedena although a lot had to do with the Tide just conservatively sitting on the ball. They knew that that without McCoy they had the game won if they didn't screw up. However, Alabama's QB was also playing with busted ribs and it showed. Florida's win over Cincinnati is equally tainted because of the disappearence of the head coach (remember the Hogs and Mizzou). Given the surprising record of Big East teams in the bowl games (including against the SEC), one must consider that the Bearcats didn't bring their best game (and as usual, Tebow was on a mission, presumably to prove that he, not Ingram and others, is the best college football player in America – as well as winning one for the Gipper (Meyer)). Polls are driven by homerism and bias and are not necessarily a true reflection of a teams prowess. A playoff system is no better. Since a "poll" would have to decide which 8 (or 16) teams would play. Can't win.
Auburn gets in and Arkansas doesn't? After we kicked their puny asses all over northwest Arkansas? This is bogus, especially considering Arkansas's strong finish on the season. This invalidates the whole thing. It's just a POLL anyhow. You could have a Razorbloggers poll that would be just as valid as CBS's, and I'll bet Arkansas would come out with the ranking they deserve, or better. When does the Razorbloggers Poll begin? I see a bunch of teams on there Arkansas could beat, one they did beat, and two more they almost beat.
In the paper today Al Neuharth is again calling for a national playoff, saying, "The present system is so stupid that even Congress threatens to get in on the act." The days of the BCS are numbered. How long can all these college presidents and chancellors endure being called "stupid"?
Al Neurath is an uberliberal, greedy robber Baron* of the media world who has no business calling for a playoff without coming up with a workable plan himself. He is appealing to the terminally disenchanted** who have even less of an idea as to how a playoff system could work that would satisfy most NCAA members. Besides money and TV exposure, the real fly in the ointment is how would you select the teams to be in the playoffs? By a poll, of course. So you're back to where you started. With biased and politically motivated opinion. As for Congress getting involved, this is exceedingly funny. Hilarious, actually. Those clowns will come up with a 3,000 page bill, that they won't have read, that only Ivy League trial lawyers will understand and which will guarantee Nebraska and LSU a playoff position in perpetuity. Plus they will argue endlessly about the social "unfairness" of not giving Eastern Michigan and Western Kentucky an equal shot at the title.
*However, Neurath is a clever media robber baron who figured out a scheme to sell his newspaper to motels and hotels who would give them as a perk to their customers for nothing. (Of course the price would be hidden in the motel's bill as a cost of doing business). Does anyone herein actually read USA Today regularly except when traveling?
**Let's see. You have two undefeated teams playing that are champions of two of the largest, most respected conferences and your still not satisfied? Jeeez. I think that there is a legitimate arguement as to whether Texas or Florida is number 2, but how relevant is that? Insofar as Auburn sneaking ahead of Arkansas in the CBS poll, it's your last game not a previous one that counts. I guess that the pollsters thought that a squeaker over Big Ten Northwestern was more important than a lucky win over E. Carolina in overtime.
Anon: Calling people names as a way to disagree with them is a logical fallacy known as "argumentum ad hominem," or "at the man." Actually Neuharth (not Neurath) did propose a plan, but that has been addressed in a previous thread on this site. Referring to Congress as "clowns" commits the same error. Your whole comment is just a rant that makes hardly any rational sense.
And willfully allow the evidence to be splattered all over the airwaves every football season?
Good point.
