I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing for Razorback Nation… unfortunately, I'm leaning towards the it's a good thing (which is really a bad thing, if you know what I mean). :-(

I really wonder the chances of him returning even if the NBA doesn't call his name. Haven't there been rumors for a while now that Fortson wants to play in Europe?

    Either case, good luck Fortson!

  3. Jay says:

I say best of luck no matter where he ends up.

I do say it's probably in the ultimate best interests of the team, though. I think with the Iowa transfer (Patterson?) and Nobles, we'll be okay at PG. I think the obvious undercurrent of attitude and discontent that always seemed to be there with Fortson was easily overlooked and brushed over during the good times (20 ppg and a six game win streak), but I think too much of a distraction and a problem during the bad times. With those two and the two freshmen guards we'll have plenty of depth will be fine.

I'm a Fortson fan, and this is too bad for the Hogs IMHO. Fortson willed this team to a number of wins, and without him….well, we saw where we were without him.

He played more under control this year, and I think with one more year he would have even been better.

Too bad for the Hogs, and too bad for our grad rates. We're gonna be in trouble there really soon. Thank goodness for Mike Washington and Steph Welsh actually doing 4 years.

To lose one of the best players in the SEC and say, 'oh well' is a very strange reaction. Unfortunately I think this demonstrates some folks' need for some sort of change, even if it is a great player like Fortson. I'm hoping the interest isn't great and he'll be back in a Hog uniform this fall.

If he were coachable he could be much better. Basketball is about team. Courtney is not. Of course to prove out any of that would require a coach.

  5. GolfHog says:

Ahh, finally another basketball story. You guys have been very good to stay away from the subject as much as possible.

You have to give Courtney his due. He sparked the 5 game win streak with that remarkable half against Miss St. After that we looked pretty much like the same team from a year ago. Can you be a team leader and a distraction? You have to wonder what Courtney would look like on team with talent. As good as he is, I just don't see his game in the NBA; a 5-10 guard with no outside shot that challenges the lane and makes more turnovers than assists (well, at least it seems that way.)

So, Pelphry was granted a free pass based on sitting Fortson only to lose Fortson and go 14-18?? Not much of a deal there. Long would have been better to stay out of it. Now he looks like a boob as well. I hope he learned his lesson. Frank at least made the coaches take responsibility for his meddlin'. That way he could still run them off when the boosters lost faith.

I know expectations couldn't be much lower but, I hope they will make every effort to lower them further to start next year. This isn't about ticket sales anymore. That train has sailed, so to speak. We need to keep the blood from splattering all over the national media next year and go as quietly as possible.

Pelphry has been here 3 years and we are still 3 years away. You have to admit it looks like we really are going backwards. But, it happens. Tenn hired Kiffin. Alabama hire Shula. It happens. At least Mike didn't take that job in Oregon.

    I like Mike.

  6. opinionatedblowhard says:

Don't blame him for leaving. Washington stuck around another year and that was a mistake. I don't see these coaches significantly impacting players growth, so if you want to get paid to play, why stay?

  7. GonzoHog says:

I agree with GolfHog about the coachability of C. Fortson. He will only allow so much.

He has pretty much the same mindset as Allen Iverson, which isn't good on most days.

What would Fortson look like with a better overall talented team? Well…uh…he would look like Fortson with more talent around him.

Isn't that basically what Iverson looked like in Denver?

Guys from that kind of mold rarely win championships, if ever.

Now I know some of you guys may blast me for saying this, because i've made statements in the past about recruiting disiplinary, problematic off the court players, but with the exception of Rotnie Clarke, this holds true for most of the 2008 class CJP brought in here. Where are they now and why?

Isn't it kind of strange CBP doesn't seem to have these same kind of problems? Know why? Because he and his staff make certain they key on high-character, coachable recruits, which could explain the lower recruiting class ranking he recieved this year by the recruiting services. They judge talent on the field, nothing else.

Maybe CJP was limited on the relationships he was able to achieve with recruits, which is more common with "up and comer" head coaches.

This next class of recruits are supposed to be high-character kids. Maybe CJP has developed those very important relationships with those kids and their parents, and could possibly have learned a very hard lesson with recruiting, realizing not all kids will accept disipline.

If Fortson had this kind of high character, he might have actually played the entire 2 seasons he's been here, and consistantly developed into the type of player he could be.

He still doesn't always play defense. I think we've all seen his desire to take plays off.

If he isn't in the spotlight, he doesn't like giving the full effort. I don't see that changing much if he decides to come back.

If he goes pro in the NBA or in Europe this coming year, he'll be completely ruined once the money starts rolling in. He doesn't have the disapline yet to make anything of it.

    And Ricardo Ratliffe does too.
