Crystal Ball 2010 — Bowl Game And Proposition Bets

Now that we’ve predicted an impressive season record for the Razorbacks in 2010, where do we think they’ll go bowling in January, 2011?

Bowl Game / Record TipsterHog HogBlogger Sunshine HogBaller
Bowl Game Capital One Sugar Capital One Sugar
Bowl Opponent Ohio State West Virginia Penn State Virginia Tech
Bowl Outcome L W W W
Final Record 10-3 13-1 11-2 11-2
Final BCS Ranking #13 #4 #8 #6

To go from no bowl…to the Liberty Bowl…to a big-time bowl — or, even more incredibly, a BCS bowl — in just three seasons at Arkansas would be an amazing accomplishment for Bobby Petrino and his staff.  If that should happen…wow.  A lot of challenges and tough teams to overcome, though, before we get to that point.

And finally, just like Vegas, here are a few ‘proposition bets‘ — interesting side bets that we’re making well over a month before the ball is snapped.

Propositions TipsterHog HogBlogger Sunshine HogBaller
Mallett wins Heisman? No No No No
Hogs’ 2010 Leader in Receiving Yards? Greg Childs Joe Adams Joe Adams Greg Childs
Hogs 2010 Defensive Rank in SEC? (12th in ‘08 and ‘09) 8th 7th 8th 8th
Hogs margin of victory vs. Ole Miss on Oct. 23? 10 17 24 30
Who wins Punter and Placekicker jobs? Dylan Breeding, Eduardo Camara  Who cares? Zach Hocker, Eduardo Camara Nick Walters, Alex Tejada
Mallett TDs – Over/Under 30? (School record is 30 – set by Mallett in 2009) Over Over Over Over
Les Miles fired prior to Ark-LSU game on Nov. 27? No No Yes No
Impact Newcomer Byran Jones Maudrecus Humphrey Zach Hocker Chris Smith
Breakout Player of the Year Cobi Hamilton Knile Davis Darius Winston Ronnie Wingo, Jr.

A few notes:

  • Don’t get us wrong…we think Ryan Mallett is poised to have a record-breaking season.  But the politics and popularity contest that is the Heisman Trophy award requires that you play for a big-name school.  This year’s Troy Smith over Darren McFadden?  Terrelle Pryor over Ryan Mallett.  Ugh.
  • Surely (SURELY!) the Hogs won’t finish in last place in the SEC in total defense for a third consecutive season.  If they do, then you can pretty much shoot us now and throw out every prediction we’ve made in these posts.
  • I don’t know about the rest of you…but I’ll just be happy when we finally beat Houston Dale.  It really doesn’t matter by how much.  Well…okay…maybe it matters a little bit.  But as Al Davis says: “Just win, baby.”
  • Not sure what Sunshine was thinking when he came up with that Les Miles prop bet.  We want ‘The Hat’ to stay a while longer, folks.  Plus…his clock management skills are without equal in college football today.

Coming up tomorrow: Who will be the division and overall champs of the SEC?

My heart says Sugar Bowl but my brain says Cap 1 or Cotton.
I do agree that Joe Adams will have the bigger year than Childs. He would have last year if not for missing several games.
Cobi Hamilton will be the breakout player and Chris Smith will be the impact freshman.
Who will lead the team in rushing? I’ll say Dennis Johnson. If he can stay out of the doghouse, I think he is the best we have.

Dennis Johnson is the man and a big reason we make the Sugar rather than the Capitol One. But, I still think you see Wingo break out this year as a one-two punch. Mostly I’m on the bandwagon because of one guy, Bobby Petrino. You don’t go 41-9 at Louisville with smoke and mirrors. He took Hooty’s leftovers and almost made a bowl with a team destined for 2-10. If he had won the Georgia game last year which they were poised to do, they would have been in the Cap One last year. This is the year you see Bobby’s name along side Saban and Meyer. Feed the Studs baby!!

Cotton Bowl vs. Chokelahoma. We win and begin watch for Stoops to come after our OC.

    Mallet – No
    Leading Receiver – Childs
    Defensive Rank – 8
Margin of victory over Hootie – 24 (In my dreams it would be 100)
    Punter/Placekicker – ?
    TD Passes – Over 30
    Les Miles fired – No
    Impact Newcomer – Bryan Jones
Breakout player – Winston (I hope)

I see Zack Hocker as newcomer of the year for simply one reason, He’s the only new recruit that potentially has a spot he can step right into.
If he’s as good as advirtized, and can take that ability to the college div. 1 level, there’s absolutely no doubt in my mind he’ll step in and take over the kickoff duties.
He may also take over the punting duties if Dylan Breeding can’t get it together this season.
Putting the ball into or close to the endzone on most of our kickoffs would garner much attention for the newcomer award.

I say it’s uncertain exactly what bowl we land in.
If my prediction of a 9-3 regular season happens, I think we could easily wind up in either the Cotton or Capitol One Bowl, like LSU did last season.

    Mallett won’t win the Heisman.

Greg Childs will lead the team in recieving yards, but not catches. Joe Adams will.

Hogs margin of victory over Ole Miss will be 27.

Malletts TDs will be over 30.

The breakout player of the year will be Dennis Johnson, if Mallett doesn’t overthrow his 5′8″ frame coming out of the backfield.

Hogs defense will rank 6th in the SEC this season.
They will be better than Auburn, Ole Miss and Miss. St. in the West, and better than SC, Kentucky and Vandi in the East.
Most would disagree we will be better on D than Ole Miss, but you have to understand that their defense will be mush in the 4th qr. of most games with 80% of their offense running and the other 20% passing. Way too many 3-n-outs to be very good for that long.

My heart says BCS title game. I really believe that the cards are set in our favor taking ‘Bama early in the season. We beat the tide early, we’ll have all eyes seeing Razorback red and that can be great for a healthy Heisman campaign for Mallett.

Unfortunately, I’m a pessimist most times, and would be real happy with a 9 or 10 win season and a Capital One bowl victory.
