HogBlogger: Sometimes you can care too much. You circle a game on the schedule while the opponent quietly prepares.

Sometimes you can care too much.

You lose a game you think you really should have won based on an analysis of ‘could have’s’ and ‘should have’s.’ Then you circle the next year’s game on the schedule and the local sportswriters write about the fact that the game has been “circled”.

You spend a week in preseason preparing for that game — and the media talk about that, too. Then one of your talented receivers is quoted in the press the week prior to the game saying, “We’ll put up a lot of points…”

More than a few fans are talking up National Championships.

Meanwhile, the opponent is quietly seething and preparing. They know you have an offensive line that has been completely rebuilt and starts a true freshman. The quarterback, while extremely talented, will be making his first SEC start in front of 100,000 of your rabid, extremely noisy fans.

The receivers, while probably the best group in the nation, will be forced into running short routes — as the pass protection will not allow longer routes — and catching the ball in positions to be hit hard and often. History has shown that after a few hard hits, they cut routes short and disappear later in the game.

As for your running game? They know you’ll hardly give it a chance. When you do, they know you’ll struggle to block their front.

The opponent also knows that they have an offense that can and will run the ball on anyone, any time, any place.

Special teams? They’ve seen your film and are not worried. You can be blocked. And tricked.

The opponent doesn’t just circle the game. They quietly mark the spot with an “X.” They’ve heard enough. They will let their hits do the talking.

As Joe Frazier once said, “Kill the body and the head will die.”

Some random thoughts after the Razorbacks' very ugly loss to Alabama.

Some random thoughts after the Razorbacks’ very ugly loss to Alabama.

The Good

On a day when there wasn’t much to cheer about, the Hogs second quarter goal-line stand was encouraging. The defense bowed up and stopped ‘Bama from the 1-yard line on three consecutive plays, with Alonzo Highsmith breaking free to make two of the stops in the series.

Say what you want to about Tyler Wilson, but Saturday he proved he’s one tough hombre. The Tide never let up in its pursuit, chasing and hitting Wilson until he was wisely removed from the game early in the fourth quarter. Of course, we’d all prefer that Wilson stay as clean as Tide quarterback A.J. McCarron did for most of the day.

Honorable Mention: Cobi Hamilton’s amazing, acrobatic third quarter touchdown catch in the back of the end zone. Ranked #6 on ESPN Top Plays of the Day. …. The Hogs only got into the Red Zone twice, but did at least convert both for touchdowns. For the season, they have converted 15-for-15 in the Red Zone with 12 TDs.

The Bad

For a team that didn’t need any more injuries, the defense suffered three more Saturday. Defensive end Tenarius Wright, cornerback Isaac Madison and safety Tramain Thomas suffered injuries that did not allow them to finish the game. Wright’s fractured left arm injury appeared to be the worst…possibly season-ending according to Quinn Grovey on the radio broadcast.

You don’t realize how far away the Hogs are on defense until you see the Tide do their thing. Bama’s ability to play a Tampa two-deep zone (sometimes even three-deep) with six defensive backs for much of the game…and STILL hold the Hogs to 17 rushing yards on 19 carries speaks volumes. They are in a league of their own.

Honorable Mention: Not calling timeout before the successful Alabama fake field goal. Bobby Petrino admitted afterwards, “I did think of calling timeout and didn’t get it done. That’s my fault.”

The Ugly

The Hogs’ punt coverage team includes two offensive lineman who would have trouble covering anything but a breakfast buffet. The bumbling attempts by the entire unit to tackle Marquis Maze on his 83-yard touchdown return was painful to watch. With the depth of skill players on this team, there’s no reason why the Razorbacks shouldn’t have excellent kick coverage units.

There are some things as a defense you should never do, and stunt and loop with your defensive linemen in goal line situations is one of those. Eddie Lacy’s 4-yard touchdown walk in the third quarter was right through a hole vacated by defensive tackle Byran Jones who was looping to the outside. Go watch the film…it happened. Willy, you’ve got to do better than that. C’mon man.

Of course, we can’t possibly mention everything that was “Good, Bad and Ugly.” What did we leave out?

We throw out our guesses and then see what you think. Are the Hogs ready to roll the Tide?

Congratulations to reader uvahog for the closest prediction last week of 41-21. His quote: “Our minds are fixated on another Alabama T-town to the north and west of Troy, but we still get the job done.”

Nice…uvahog not only picked the closest score, he also predicted the hot topic (some would say ‘concern’) that was discussed by fans this week. Congrats, uvahog. Wear your new RBN T-shirt amongst all those Virginia Cavaliers with pride.

One thing is for sure…if the Hogs decide to look past another opponent this season, they probably won’t be lucky enough to win that week. Nine straight tough games lay in front of this Razorback team. And it doesn’t get much tougher than trying to go get a win in Tuscaloosa.

So here we go:

Walking on Sunshine: I get the feeling that Bobby Petrino will bring the best game plan of his Arkansas career to Tuscaloosa on Saturday. That said, I’m not sure that the offensive line has progressed as much as we would have liked. The defense plays great, but the pass protection is the Achilles’ heel. Alabama 19, Arkansas 17.

HogBaller: This is the biggest game yet of the Bobby Petrino era. The Hogs pit their high-octane offense against the top-ranked ‘Bama defense. Can the Hogs contain Trent Richardson? Can they protect Tyler Wilson? The Razorbacks kick the door down and prove they belong among the best in the SEC. Arkansas 34, Alabama 24.

HogBlogger: Alabama’s running game and secondary once again prove to be more than the Hogs can handle. Wilson runs for his life. Alabama 34, Arkansas 24.

TipsterHog: The Hogs are more ready to play than the last time they were in Tuscaloosa. But like that game in 2009, Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide defense are still too much for an inexperienced quarterback and offensive line. Alabama 27, Arkansas 17.

Leave a comment with your name, e-mail address and pick. And feel free to add your own take like “Shirley Q. Liquor cheers for the alternative team” or “Tide crashes. Hogs roll.”

After taking their eye off the ball in the second half against Troy, the Hogs will finally get the opponent they’ve been pointing to for the last nine months -- the Alabama Crimson Tide.

After taking their eye off the ball in the second half against Troy, the Hogs will finally get the opponent they’ve been pointing to for the last nine months — the Alabama Crimson Tide (3-0). The 2:30 kickoff in Tuscaloosa will be televised nationally by CBS.

For many Hog fans, the sky has been falling this week after watching a Sun Belt team outscore the home team 21-14 in the second half and out gain them 457-454 for the game last Saturday.

While it’s disappointing that the Hogs didn’t finish better, we surmise the letup had more to do with looking ahead to this week’s opponent after the score reached 31-7 midway through the third quarter. The players did it, and from looking at the half-empty student section after halftime, some of the fans did it as well.

Looking ahead was something that Alabama didn’t do. The Tide methodically dismissed North Texas 41-0 to stay perfect. Running backs Trent Richardson (167 RuYds, 3TDs) and Eddie Lacy (161 RuYds, 2TDs) both had big days, while the ‘Bama defense held the Mean Green to 169 total yards.

After losing three games in 2010, Nick Saban (46-11, 5th year at Alabama) has another National Championship on his mind in 2011. Sporting 10 returning starters on defense will do that for you. Saban’s attention to detail on defense is the only thing that reminds us of Bobby Petrino’s offensive preparation.

The Alabama defense is littered with All-Americans and All-SEC players. Inside linebacker Dont’a Hightower (6-4, 260) and safety Mark Barron lead a unit that stands third in the nation in total defense (170.0 YPG) and second in scoring defense (6.0 PPG).

The Tide have shown multiple fronts so far in their first three games, mixing in some 4-3 with their base 3-4 defense. Surprisingly, they have recorded only 4 sacks on the season (76th nationally), and 15 tackles for loss (82nd) — curiously low numbers given the strength of that unit.

On offense, what started out as a quarterback battle has turned into the A.J. McCarron show. McCarron has started the last two games, and performed well (48-for-75, 579 passing yards, 2 TDs) while throwing only two interceptions thus far this season.

McCarron has leaned heavily on the running game. Saban wants to run the ball and it shows. The Richardson and Lacy combo has accounted for 629 yards on 78 carries (8.1 YPC), and 11 touchdowns this year. Razorback fans know what Richardson can do…see 2009 for reference.

When they do throw, Marquis Maze has been the primary target so far. Maze toiled in the shadow of Julio Jones for a few seasons, but is making up for it this season to the tune of 15 catches for 186 yards (12.4 yards/catch).

On special teams, junior kicker Jeremy Shelley (6-8 FG, long 37) has been adequate. Shelley has limited range, though, so kickoff man Cade Foster might be called on for kicks over 45 yards. Walk-on punter Cody Mandell was on the freshman All-SEC team a year ago, but is only averaging 38.5 yards per punt in 2011. Maze doubles as a dangerous punt return specialist (13.0 yards/return, long 47).

As usual when Alabama plays Arkansas, the key to winning lies up front. Last year in Fayetteville, the Hogs inability to run the ball and keep Mallett clean made it tough to move the football when the game was on the line. You’ll know early on if this one is going to be a ball game.

If the Hogs’ offensive line can open enough lanes for Ronnie Wingo to run it even a little, that might be enough. Otherwise, just like last year, the Tide will ‘pin their ears back’ and get after Tyler Wilson. With Jake Bequette hopefully returning from injury, we think the defense is good enough to hold the Tide to 20 points or less.

Vegas isn’t giving the Hogs much of a shot in this one. Alabama opened as a 12 1/2 point favorite on the early line.

Some random thoughts after the Razorbacks’ tough loss to Alabama.

The Good

Easily the best of “The Good” of this game — and really all week — were the Razorback fans. The students set the tone early, camping out all week and building “Woo Pig City” down Stadium Drive. For most of the game, the noise level was the loudest we’ve ever been a part of at ANY stadium. And several of the national writers in attendance, who go to venues around the country each weekend, made a point to mention how impressed they were with the crowd noise and game atmosphere.

Lost in the disappointment of the fourth quarter was the performance of the “Good” Ryan Mallett. With 306 yards passing in the first three quarters, Mallett had an impressive 75% completion percentage, a rushing touchdown and a passing touchdown to open the game.

And speaking of that opening touchdown, we’re not sure the Hogs could have started any better. The 2-play, 74-yard touchdown drive — which took all of 50 seconds — set the crowd on fire and absolutely stunned the Alabama defense.

It was great to see unsung receiver Jarius Wright have a big game on the national stage. With Alabama looking to contain Joe Adams and Greg Childs, Wright’s 131 receiving yards was the second highest total of his career.

Against what will likely by the best offensive line the Hogs will face all year, defensive end Tenarius “Tank” Wright came up big. His bone-crushing fourth quarter sack (one of his two sacks on the day) forced the Tide to settle for a field goal and preserved the slim Razorback lead. Unfortunately, that’s when a lot of “The Bad” started happening…

The Bad

After handling the pressure nearly all game — and really all week — Ryan Mallett finally appeared to let it get to him in the fourth quarter. While the Hogs still had a chance to win the game with three minutes left, you could see from Mallett’s body language that he hadn’t yet recovered from the interception thrown earlier in the fourth quarter. The cool demeanor that he showed during the game-winning drive at Georgia wasn’t there this time. And a panicked attempt to avoid a sack resulted in a turnover that basically ended the game.

For those that think offensive balance is important, look no further than Saturday’s game for proof. The Hogs inability to establish a running threat (64 yards on 20 attempts) let the Alabama defense ‘pin their ears back’ and pressure Mallett at will in the second half.

While Mallett will likely receive much of the criticism, the Razorback defense continued their season-long struggle to get off the field. The 16-play, 66-yard drive by Alabama that ate up over half of the fourth quarter was particularly excruciating. While the defense did finally stiffen, holding the Tide to only a field goal, there were three successful third down conversions that kept the drive going and allowed Alabama to set the fourth quarter tempo.

Last year’s Achilles’ heel — third down efficiency — reared it’s ugly head again on Saturday. The 2 for 10 conversion rate was a direct result of the anemic rushing attack that put the Hogs in third-and-long situations all day. By contrast, Alabama was 8 for 14 on third down.

The Ugly

Even though they were playing at home, the Razorbacks somehow had four false start penalties on Saturday. While the noise and atmosphere was great, the crowd was (mostly) smart enough to quiet down when the Razorbacks had the ball. But the Hogs still finished with twice as many false start penalties as Alabama. And Mallett ended a promising first quarter drive himself by attempting to make too many pre-snap adjustments that caused back-to-back false start penalties.

And finally — in the easiest “Ugly” so far this year — the newly fabricated ‘snout’ attached to the Broyles Center is hideous. Instead of their usual entry into the stadium under an inflatable Razorback head, the Hogs entered the field Saturday through the ‘nostrils’ of the new snout. Yeah…we’re going to have to…uh…turn our nose up at this change. Another example of the UA game day people trying to ‘outthink the room’ for no good reason.

Of course, we can’t mention everything that was “Good, Bad and Ugly.” What did we leave out?

We throw out our guesses and then see what you think. Who wins the showdown of Top 10 teams on The Hill?

Congratulations to reader MarquisHawg for the exact prediction last week of 31-24. His quote: “I say Arkansas is due for a win like this.” Agreed Marquis…this team was due to finally win a tough game on the road.

MarquisHawg actually tied with a friendly Georgia fellow (DonkeyDawg) who stopped by to comment last week. But as our contest rules state, ties are broken by a…uh…”random” drawing. (C’mon now…it’s not like a Georgia fan really wants to wear a Razorback blog t-shirt.)

So here we go:

Walking on Sunshine: Get out your umbrellas folks — Sunshine is getting ready to rain on the parade. I like our passing attack a lot vs. the Bama secondary. And I have a feeling this crowd might be one of the best Fayetteville crowds in the last 30 years. But I’ve seen nothing that tells me that we can run the ball or stop the Tide rushing attack, and that usually tells the tale. I think we could run the table after this one, but… Alabama 38, Arkansas 27.

HogBaller: The most anticipated Razorback game in decades comes down to simply this: “To be the best, you’ve got to beat the best.” Bobby Petrino said of the matchup, “This is what I came here for.” The Razorbacks show they are ready to join the upper echelon of the SEC in front of a national audience…by beating the #1 team in the country. Arkansas 31, Alabama 17.

HogBlogger: Unless the Crimson Tide self-destructs like Texas in 1981, Saturday will prove to be a tough day for the Hogs. Alabama pressure on Mallett and a Razorback defense still apt to give up the big play will combine with the yellow flags of the SEC officials to take the Hogs down. Alabama 35, Arkansas 17.

TipsterHog: My prediction before the season was an ‘L’ for this game. But I’ve been wavering this week with all the enthusiasm and excitement on The Hill. On the field, though, this improving team hasn’t played well enough yet for me to think they’re ready to defeat the best team in the land. Alabama 34, Arkansas 20.

Leave a comment with your name, e-mail address and pick. And feel free to add your own take like “Nick Saban detours team bus to Gentry for a few snack cakes” or “Tide crashes. Hogs roll.”

After the biggest road win of the Bobby Petrino era, the Hogs return home this week to face the #1 team in the nation, the Alabama Crimson Tide.

After the biggest road win of the Bobby Petrino era, the Hogs return home this week to face the #1 team in the nation, the Alabama Crimson Tide. While the game will be nationally televised on CBS at 2:30 p.m, today it’s only Wednesday and Fayetteville is already in a frenzy.

Bama won’t admit it, but they’ve had a pretty easy go of it so far. Big wins over San Jose St. (48-3) and Duke (62-13) were sandwiched around their only real test, Penn State, which the Tide won 24-3. A freshman quarterback for the Nittany Lions did little, however, to test the Alabama secondary.

The Tide defense is led by Dont’a Hightower (16 tackles in 2010), who missed most of 2009 with a knee injury suffered in the Arkansas game. All-SEC safety Mark Barron is the only returning starter in the secondary.

While the Bama ‘D’ has been stellar (6.3 points/game) thus far, we were surprised to see that they have only recorded 2 sacks in the first three games (last in the SEC). By comparison, the Hogs have 12, which leads the SEC. How is this possible for an Alabama defense that so far has played two overmatched opponents and a true freshman quarterback?

On the offensive side, quarterback Greg McElroy has been the model of consistency. Completing 71.7 percent of his passes, and leading the SEC in passing efficiency (200.0), McElroy has proven to be the perfect quarterback for a Nick Saban (36-8, 4th year at Alabama) coached team. He’s solid, distributes the ball, and doesn’t turn it over. His big target is wide receiver Julio Jones (15-248, 2 TDs), who as a junior is finally living up to the hype.

The two bell cows on offense, though, are running backs Trent Richardson and Mark Ingram. In what might be the best tandem of running back in the nation, Richardson (124 total yards/game, 4 TDs) and Ingram (151 rush yards/game, 2 TDs) will be tough for the Hogs to contain. The offensive line has three returning starters. Running lanes have been plentiful to start the season.

Compared to years past, the Tide special teams seem a bit down this year. Punt returner Marquis Maze is no Javier Arenas. New freshman punter Cody Mandell has been shaky to start, only averaging 39.2 yards per punt. By contrast, Hog punter Dylan Breeding (2nd in the SEC) sports a 46.8 yard average. Placements for the Tide are split between freshman Cade Foster (4-5 FGs) and sophomore Jeremy Shelley (13-13 PATs). None of the three have kicked in a hostile environment.

With reports from campus of students already in line in a ‘tent city’ set up on the east side of the stadium, it’s obvious they will be primed and ready for this matchup of top 10 teams. The Tide remain a 7 1/2 point favorite.

To climb that mountain, you’ve got to do it one step at a time. If the Razorbacks can manage to hang in there early, and get some stops from the defense, the crowd could make this one crazy. Stopping the Bama rushing attack seems like a tall task, but if you look at last year, the Hogs held this bunch to 134 rushing yards in Tuscaloosa. An effort like that this year might make for a fun day in the Ozarks.

For those of you looking for the stars to align when it comes to the Razorbacks 2010 chances, here’s some ammunition for you.

Over the next several weeks, many of the College Football pre-season publications will be hitting the newsstands, making their selections for conference and national champions. No doubt guys like Phil Steele and others look for who’s got the best players and team, but they also put a lot of stock into who has the “most manageable” schedule.

Last season, the Hogs had arguably one of the toughest road schedules in the country. At Alabama, at Florida, at Ole Miss, and at LSU usually gets the coach fired.

This season, trading Florida for Vanderbilt, catching Georgia early as they break in a new quarterback, and getting to host Alabama and LSU gives the Hogs a chance to make some noise in 2010. The “tide has turned”….in more ways than one.

Much was made earlier this spring when Alabama first realized that six of their eight SEC opponents had a bye week the week before they played the Tide. How could this be? I mean, it’s Alabama after all. Did Commissioner Mike Slive and Associate Commissioner Charles Bloom forget who’s in charge???

Especially as the season wears on, bye weeks are big. A chance to heal, rest, and spend more time preparing for your opponent are just a few of the advantages bye weeks bring. For example, while the Hogs get their legs back in Week 5, Texas A&M has to tangle with Oklahoma State before travelling to Dallas to face the Razorbacks on October 9.

There’s no guarantees that these teams coming off byes will perform better. Bama was going to get everybody’s best shot this year anyway. That “bulls eye” comes with winning the National Championship. But still – as far as schedule goes – advantage Arkansas.

It’s funny, and forgive us if we chuckle a bit, when we see even Georgia State, who is starting their inaugural season playing football in 2010, scheduled a bye just before the Crimson Tide too!!!

Despite the SEC’s recent statement on the matter, they continue to try and finagle something for the Crimson Tide. It’s unlikely that anything can be shuffled around at this late date, but we bet this never happens again.

So for those of you looking for the stars to align when it comes to the Razorbacks 2010 chances, here’s some ammunition for you. As far as the schedule goes…you couldn’t lay it out much better than this.
