It took more than LSU’s self-destruction for the Razorbacks to win last Friday. The Hogs also had to hold together. This team has to win the award for the most resilience shown by a Razorback team ever.

Casey Dick ended his career with a heroic touchdown pass to London Crawford…and as the third all-time leading Razorback in completions, attempts, yards, and touchdown passes.

On the ground, I loved the way that Dennis Johnson brought the ‘will to win‘ into the game. His 127 yards rushing was not only a testament to him, but to the entire offensive front.

And whenever questioned about different players stepping up like Carlton Salters, I loved that Bobby Petrino said, “He’s a guy that we have a lot of confidence in.” That’s exactly what all these players (especially the younger ones) needed from their coach.

And in the finest (or perhaps only) second half performance all season by the Razorback defense, LSU managed only 19 yards on their last six possessions of the game.

The Hogs had nine players with four or more tackles. Malcolm Sheppard, Jerico Nelson and seniors Cord Gray and Walner Leandre came up big on the refurbished (yet again) defensive line. Maybe Robinson and Mitchell should have been banished earlier.

But admit it…when the Hogs got the ball on their 31 yard line with 2:14 showing on the clock, you thought we had an outside chance to win, didn’t you? The progress made this year is illustrated by the fact that not only did we actually run a two-minute drill, but that we scored on it to win the game.

For the season, eight games were decided by less than 10 points — the Hogs lost four of those. The inability to play with any consistency, along with consistently losing the special teams battle, doomed the young (very young) Hogs to a losing record.

While this year will not go down as one for the ages, it will be remembered as the year that the battleship that has been Arkansas football began to turn in a different direction. The focus has been changed from feeling limited in what we can do…to becoming confident in what we want to do.

This year was about starting over. Next year the true journey will begin.

Several different players stepped up and produced on Saturday. Senior safety Dallas Washington had six tackles and pulled in his first career interception; freshman fullback Mitchell Bailey scored his first career touchdown; redshirt freshman quarterback Nathan Dick led the Hogs on a 13 play, 80 yard touchdown drive; and junior tailback Brandon Barnett rushed 7 times for 45 yards and a touchdown.

The Bad

Seeing the Razorback defense force a turnover should actually make fans cringe this season. Once again on Saturday, the Hogs’ offense went three-and-out immediately after the defense had a takeaway. We’ve lost track here at RBN of the number of times that’s happened this year…certainly in at least four of the ten games played.

I guess there’s an “SEC Player of the Week Jinx” since Casey Dick had one of his worst outings as a Razorback in the game after receiving the recognition. Freshman mistakes continue to plague the senior quarterback: grounding penalties, holding the ball too long, and tossing three interceptions. As Coach Petrino said, “Anytime you throw three interceptions like that, you’re going to have a heck of a time winning the game.”

The Ugly

There was more ugly than you could shake a stick at on Saturday as the Hogs generally had a letdown game. (Six sacks???) But one play that was especially ugly was the 66-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jared Cook that was allowed by the Hog defense. And I say ‘allowed’ because it took the poor tackling effort of several Razorback defenders to ‘allow’ it to happen.

The Good

Good? Seriously? We saw something good during that game? The best we could come up with was that it was good to see Frank Broyles and Darrell Royal together again for the pre-game coin toss. (Last week the ‘good‘ was the weather and the halftime show. Sheesh.)

Oh…and John Pelphrey’s basketball Hogs begin practicing in two weeks.

The Bad

Alex Tejada’s first quarter missed field goal may have been his last for a while. His replacement, Shay Haddock, kicked a 30-yard field goal, but was shaky in his only extra point attempt. As if this team didn’t already have enough holes to plug. And to think placekicker was a position that most felt comfortable with before the season. (Of course, when you’re getting beat by 40+ points, do you even need to try another field goal?)

As bad as the offensive line was in allowing seven sacks, as a quarterback, you can’t just sit back there forever and wait to be tackled. We’ll cut true freshman Tyler Wilson some slack…but senior Casey Dick should know by now how to throw the ball away or scramble away from pressure. As much as anything, negative plays are killing this offense right now.

The Ugly

Hmmm…let us count the ways. When it’s the most lopsided loss to Texas in over 90 years, quite frankly, there’s more ‘ugly’ than we’d care to go through. Let’s just say that it was a miracle that they didn’t run out of ammo for that cannon they shot off all day.

One ugly moment late in the game, however, did stick out. Guard Wade Grayson’s failed attempt to block (or even slow down) a Texas defender — lined up directly in front of him — causing Tyler Wilson to throw a fourth quarter interception returned for a touchdown. It was certainly a fitting end to a frustrating day.

Some random thoughts after watching the WIU game.

The Good

Casey was the man. He played a part in all four scores and set a career high with 318 passing yards. We don’t win that game without him.

Some of the freshman defensive players can really hit and hit hard. Linebacker Jelani Smith completely blew up WIU running back Herb Donaldson and forced a fumble that stalled the Leathernecks first possession.

As Bobby Petrino might say, the field looked ‘tight.’ The classic logo at midfield is just the right size and is flanked nicely by the SEC logos.

The Bad

The protection breakdowns in the offensive line, an assumed strength of this team, was surprising and disappointing. The sacks and negative plays allowed doomed several first half drives.

As feared, the defensive front showed no signs of being able to stop the run. Granted, Herb Donaldson was as good as advertised (35 carries for 157). But still, we got pushed around pretty good.

Several kickoffs by Jeremy Davis barely made it to the 20-yard line. We need to try Tejada kicking off ASAP.

Pile up those red pants on the 50-yard line and burn the damn things! We’ve had enough of them in 2008.

The Ugly

Elton Ford’s fumble on the opening kickoff immediately took the crowd out of the game. It also set a tone of tentativeness by the Hogs that lasted well into the second quarter.

I lost count of the dropped passes and dropped interceptions. I know the humidity was really high, but it sure didn’t seem to affect the Leathernecks as much as the home team.

When the going got tough, London Crawford took it to the house…just not the end zone. The oft-injured receiver got his ‘bell rung’ on a fourth quarter kickoff return and was later carted off the field as a precaution. Coach Petrino couldn’t specify on Sunday when he thought Crawford would be able to return to practice.

1. Tim Tebow, Junior, Florida — One word…Heisman. Tough as they come and in a good system, Tebow’s leadership could bring home another national champioship to Gainesville. Expect his passing skills to take another leap forward in 2008.

2. Matthew Stafford, Junior, Georgia — In the same class as former Hog Mitch Mustain, Stafford didn’t have the same level of scrutiny coming into his freshman season. But his solid play down the stretch in 2007 helped the ‘Dogs win their last seven games and finish as one of the hottest teams in college football.

3. John Parker Wilson, Senior, Alabama — Wilson threw for over 2,800 yards and 18 TDs in 2007 for the 7-6 Crimson Tide. For 2008, Wilson will be breaking in his third offensive coordinator (Jim McElwain) in three seasons.

4. Casey Dick, Senior, Arkansas — For the first time ever, Casey looked like a college quarterback in the spring. Throwing for 404 yards and 2 TDs in the spring game, he showed Razorback fans what a good system and good quarterback coaching can do.

5. Wesley Carroll, Sophomore, Mississippi State — Carroll made a believer out of me last year when he torched the Hogs for 421 yards and 4 TDs in Little Rock. With an improved surrounding cast, look for Carroll to take off in 2008.

6. Jonathan Crompton, Junior, Tennessee – While waiting his turn for two years behind Erik Ainge, Crompton has seen only spot duty for the past two seasons (498 yards, 5 TDs). The absence of OC David Cutcliffe, however, may stunt Crompton’s growth.

7. Jevan Snead, Sophomore, Ole Miss — Some might have him higher, but we have seen what the former regime can do to a promising young quarterback. Snead didn’t want to compete with current Texas QB Colt McCoy, so he bolted for Oxford. Hope he likes handing the ball off.

8. Kodi Burns, Sophomore, Auburn — Even though he split time with four-year starter Brandon Cox last season, Burns surprisingly has competition for the starting job in 2008. JC transfer Chris Todd is pushing hard and new OC Tony Franklin (formerly of Troy) has held off naming a starter until the fall.

9. Chris Nickson, Senior, Vanderbilt — Ankle injuries wiped out Nickson’s 2007 season (763 yards, 6 TDs). With only two other offensive starters returning and the loss of All-SEC wideout Earl Bennett to the NFL, 2008 could be an exercise in futility.

10. Tommy Beecher/Chris Smelley, South Carolina — The ‘Ole Ball Coach’ couldn’t make up his mind on a starting QB this spring (surprise, surprise)…so he just picked one (Beecher). The elevation of Steve Spurrier, Jr. to playcaller (à la Skip Holtz) has signaled the beginning of the end for “Steve Superior” in Columbia.

11. Curtis Pulley/Mike Hartline, Kentucky — The loss of All-SEC performer Andre Woodson and his 40 TD passes will hit the Wildcats hard. Pulley and Hartline combined to throw four passes for 34 yards in 2007. They will be learning on the job…and that’s definitely not good in this league.

12. Jarrett Lee/Andrew Hatch, LSU — With the cancer that was Ryan Perrilloux removed from his team, Les “The Hat” Miles will pick between a redshirt freshman (Lee) or a transfer from Harvard (Hatch). Yes…that’s right…Harvard. Hatch attempted only two passes in 2007.

So there you have it. Does that make you like our chances in 2008 any better now? Are any of these new guys going to have a big year and burst onto the national scene?

Nutt: ” … I have said all along that we have to have two good quarterbacks. We couldn’t have won those first seven games without Mitch Mustain. When November hit and things started moving a bit faster I just felt it was time for Casey (Dick). It’s one word; it’s experience. That’s all it is.

From this morning’s article about Casey Dick’s visit to the back doctor in Little Rock:

Realizing that Dick’s back injury wasn’t getting much better with rest and standard treatment, Arkansas athletic trainer Dean Weber and assistant athletic trainer Eric Linson sent the quarterback to Little Rock to meet with Rob Tillman, a physician.

“After several imaging scans and evaluations, they have confirmed that Casey has muscle tightness facilitated by a stress reaction at L2 (vertebrae),” Weber said in a statement released Tuesday night through the university.

The way I’m reading this, we might see Casey back on the field in a few days, or, more than likely, in a few weeks. I suspect we will see McFadden on the field before we see Casey.

Why do I say this? It is pretty clear that Casey’s back issues began with the hit by Olajubutu in the spring (that easily would have drawn a penalty flag if it had occurred in a ‘real’ game). To have suffered through the remainder of the spring practices and to have healed by fall, only then to begin to experience pain again tells us a lot about his problem. Something about that hit changed his back. Possibly forever.

If you search Google for the combination of “stress reaction”, the word ‘back’, and the word ‘pain’ and roam through the reading a bit you’ll encounter the word ‘spondylolysis.’ If you search Google for ‘spondylolysis‘ you’ll get quite a reading list. I recommend going directly to this article, but there is a lot of good reading under this topic. You’ll note that there’s lots of discussion about athletics and back pain.

I’m not a doctor. But, on L5 my ‘scottie dog has a broken neck.’ I have the condition ‘spondylolysis.’ It came from trauma – getting hit – a long time ago. So, I know a bit about back pain. I had a very small fracture at the neck of my scottie dog. It is forever broken as it is something that really doesn’t grow back together.

My pain comes and goes. I go for long periods with no pain at all. I have periods where the pain is a dull ache that is easily controlled by stretching, ice, and Advil. I have periods where the pain is like a stab in the back that immediately shoots down my leg. As a matter of fact, I’m going through one of the latter periods this month. I can swing a golf club today, but I can’t bend over to read a putt or tie my shoe. Lifting my right foot off the ground is agony. Getting in and out of a vehicle is torture. I can be fine one moment and in amazing pain the next. Dealing with this literally wears you out. I’m not unique. I meet lots of people with this problem.

I’ve been told that Casey’s pain is like a ‘stab in the back.’ The word ‘fracture’ has been used quietly. My understanding from the first recurrence last week was that this was much worse than what was being said publicly. As you can see from your reading, ‘stress reaction’ in relation to back pain (that appears suddenly) tends to be proceeded by a trauma – a hit – that relocated or re-jiggered some part of the spine.

Having been to almost every open practice and watching him, it is obvious to me that the pain comes and goes. The other night I watched him run a bit, lean over and make a one handed catch and playfully throw the ball to a teammate. Seemed fine and moved freely. Then I saw him hold his back for a couple of minutes and move about very stiffly. Somewhere towards the end of that activity I’m guessing the ‘stab’ must have hit him. You begin to move in a ‘stiff’ fashion because you don’t want another ‘stab.’ As time passes you relax, but then you do something to cause the ‘stab’ and the process starts over. The more you ‘tense’ and ‘tighten up’ to avoid the stabs, the worse it seems to be.

Depending on the severity of the episode, I find that it takes anywhere between 4 weeks and 6 months before I’m back to a ‘normal’ pain free state. Stretching, ice, meds, and careful physical activity and rehab are needed. (No heat – I learned that the hard way.) In 30 plus years of having this problem, I have had five major episodes that took more than three months to recover from. (The first, and one of the worst, at age 21.) I’ve had years of annoying minor pain. Many times I haven’t even known what triggered the major episode. I work with a sports chiropractor on an as needed basis to help me get ‘loosened up.’ All a real doctor can do is recommend therapy, keep you in pills and advise you to put off surgery as long as possible. (If anyone knows different, I’m all ears.)

This is not something you rest and rehab for a week or two and it gets all better. But you can get better.

Tuesday’s open practice was well attended by fans and media types alike, with appropriate set-ups for live shots, an extended cell phone call into a talk show, and the water girls staying busy due to the heat. The black tarp around the fence and the sunken nature of the West side of the practice field ensures a lack of breeze to the players were any to be available.

Reggie Herring is extremely entertaining and possibly not long for this earth if he continues to exert himself in this heat like he did today. He is colorful, explaining to one player that “Superman isn’t real, he lives in comic books, and you ain’t Superman.”

Howard, Hillis, and company look good. I’m liking the running backs. Quarterbacks have more than a ways to go, with Casey Dick actually providing some impressive moments while serving up balls to the backs and tight ends against the linebackers and safeties. He puts the ball in good places I noticed. Robert Johnson is obviously ahead of Chris and Cole, and fortunately we have many practices days ahead for all, as it appeared many more were needed.

Monk and the other receivers have promise, but that remains a big “we’ll see” with me. Cornerbacks will struggle. As it goes in football, the story will be in the offensive and defensive lines, and nothing happened today to provide any insight to that.

So there you go. No plays, alignments or schemes revealed. A fun time was had by all.
